Apple Exec Tips Cheap iPhone, Maybe

If the rumor mill has taught us anything this week, it’s that we should really be looking past today’s event to whatever Apple has planned next. According to at least one employee, today’s iPad announcement is going to be a bit of a snoozer. But while an iPad 3 announcement is likely still a ways off, we’ll no doubt being seeing some kind of of iPhone announcement at around the halfway mark this year.

In an recent meeting with Bernstein Research, Apple’s COO (and stand-in CEO) Tim Cook let slip a little bit of information that many are jumping on as evidence of that cheap iPhone/iPhone nano we’ve been hearing so much about in the past month.
Toni Sacconaghi, the Bernstein analyst who met with Cook, reported that the exec “appeared to reaffirm the notion that Apple is likely to develop lower priced offerings,” in an attempt to shoot down the notion that Apple products are “just for the rich.”
This, of course, is far from a concession–Apple’s executives are generally pretty good about keeping things under wraps (particularly due to the fact that, until fairly recently, only one of them really did any speaking on behalf of the company). It’s something to think about, at least, as you spend the day refreshing the Apple Store page.
