Did Life on Earth Descend From Alien Space Zombies?

Necropanspermia. It’s not just a killer Scrabble word that will net you like a thousand points, but an intriguing new theory on how life came to be on this little blue planet of ours. It says that all life on Earth “resurrected” from stagnate bits of DNA collected from the remains of dead space viruses.

Yup, we’re all the descendants of zombie microbes.

In his new paper to be published in Space
Science Reviews
, Astronmer Paul Wesson argues that enough genetic information could survive interstellar travel and make its way to earth. “The vast majority of organisms reach a new home in the Milky Way in a
technically dead state,” he wrote. “Resurrection may, however, be possible.”

Wesson argues that any small amount of genetic material–no matter how damaged–could eventually begin the process of regeneration.
