Whether you’re monitoring your office after hours, checking in on your pets while you’re on vacation or just want to make sure that your valuables are safe from thieves, the new Dropcam Echo ($279) may be exactly what you’re looking for.
The successor to the original video-only Dropcam ($199), the Dropcam Echo promises to be easy to set up and use. It measures just 3.7″ x 2.3″ x 1.3″ and weighs 3.3 ounces.
If you already have a Wi-Fi b/g network in the location you wish to monitor, all you have to do is plug in the Dropcam Echo and register for an account on the Dropcam web site.
You can then view footage in any compatible web browser or use the free iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad application which is available on the Apple App Store. You also have the option to invite others to view the live feed via a secure link; they will need to set up their own free Dropcam account.
The company offers a choice of three monitoring plans for their Dropcam. The Basic plan is free, but only includes free real-time live monitoring, without any recording or alert options.
The Plus plan ($8.95 monthly) allows users to record up to one week of video footage in addition to live viewing, and users are able to download screenshots or video clips from ten seconds to fifteen minutes in length.
The Pro plan ($24.95 monthly) offers up to 30 days of online recording. Both the Plus and Pro plans also offer an alert service that sends email or text messages alerts when motion is detected by the camera.
