If you are sending in your Android phone for repair, or if you’re thinking about trying a different operating system like iOS, then take note that you should either choose to backup your Android phone locally on your computer, or ensure that you return to your Android device (or a new Android device) within 2 months, otherwise your backup will be deleted.
This is according to a recent post on Reddit in which it seems that some users are finding out the hard way that no device usage after 2 months will see your Android backup deleted. According to Google’s support page, users will be “notified” when they go to Google Drive and their Android backup will be marked with a countdown that tells users that it will expire in X number of days, but it seems that many users feel that this is a poor way to inform users about it.
The post on Reddit reads, “There was no warning from Google. They just deleted my data. There’s apparently an expiration date that shows up under the backup if I had checked the Backup folder sooner, but there was no notification, no email, no proactive notice at all, and most importantly, no option to use the 100gb of my Drive storage to keep my fucking backup.”
This means that even if you are paying for Google Drive storage, it does not matter because it will be deleted. We’re not sure why Google has chosen to do this, but this is something to take note of if you’d like to avoid such a situation in the future.
