GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — Police in coastal Mississippi say the body of a missing 5-year-old girl has been found in a vacant mobile home, and her death is being investigated as a homicide.
Gulfport Police spokesman Sgt. Damon McDaniel says the body of Janaya Makayia Thompson was found about 8:45 a.m. Thursday. He says the trailer home is about a five-minute walk from her family’s apartment.
McDaniel said in a text message that Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove identified the child but has not yet conducted an autopsy.
Police would not provide any information on a possible cause of death.
The child had last been seen in the parking lot outside the apartment about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
