Julian Assange Targeted By Arrest Warrant Over Rape, Molestation Charges
Posted in: Miscellaneous Tech, Today's ChiliJulian Assange has landed himself in the crosshairs of plenty of governments and coporations, thanks to his site WikiLeaks.org, but it may be something else entirely that takes the Australian Internet activist down. Sweden has issued an international warrant for Assange’s arrest over allegations of rape, molestation, and “unlawful coercion.”
Assange has denied the allegations of two women after a visit to that country in August, calling the event consensual. His lawyer called the accusations “false and without basis.”
Swedish Director of Public Prosecution, Marianne Ny, is looking to arrest Assange via Interpol, after her original request was rejected by a Swedish District Court. Assange met the women at a Stockholm seminar on August 14. The women filed joint complaints six days later.
“Only after the women became aware of each other’s relationships with Mr Assange did they make their allegations against him,” Assange’s lawyer told AP.
The investigation was opened on August 20th, dropped a day later, and then picked up by Ny after a week. Assange’s lawyers believe that there’s not enough evidence to convict him.
