Smartphones are pretty much the staple device for many of us – so much so, in fact, that some of us would even carry a couple of smartphones around simply because we are so busy with our work lives. Having said that, what if you would want to take a break from it all, at least for a while so that you can recalibrate your life and celebrate what is truly important, without a traditional looking smartphone (you know, the rectangular block in your pocket or handbag)? Monohm has just announced the creation of Runcible, which is touted to be the first personal device for the post-smartphone era.
The Runcible has been specially modeled on the pocket watch, where it will feature a high resolution, fully round screen. The device itself comes with a high-performance phone and camera, and will also boast of features that have been designed to refocus users’ attention on real people and the real world.
Runcible will be built on top of Mozilla’s Open Source Firefox OS, and KDDI Corporation happens to be Monohm’s first carrier partnership. KDDI’s Design Series, an award winning line of high end mobile devices available in Japan, will also be part of the Runcible’s development phase and assist in customizing the Runcible for the Japanese market with Monohm.
Aubrey Anderson, CEO and co-founder, Monohm Inc., shared, “People need something to let them control their digital lives in clean, quiet, simple ways. Runcible is the alternative to the increasingly invasive and commodified smartphone whose app-centric approach distracts us from our lives instead of helping us live them.”
Touted to boast of the first-ever fully round screen and palm-sized form, it has been modeled after devices that humans have always carried with them such as the pocket watch, the compass, the magical stone which fits the palm of our hand. It will have simple interfaces that focus on clean summaries of our digital lives, as well as a curated maps program which would let you find the most interesting route to a destination as opposed to the fastest.
You will not need any extra software or apps since Runcible’s operating system is based on Open Web standards, and Runcible’s parts can be removed, repaired, and upgraded so that this device will remain ahead of the obsolescence race. Expect the Runcible to be initially available in late 2015, without any word on pricing just yet.
