The opening day of PAX East 2010, much like this year’s CES, was all about 3D. Nvidia held a late afternoon event that showcased the company’s new GeForce 480 and 470 GPUs, which are touted as being two of the most powerful GPUs on the planet.
Nvidia set the stage correctly. Reps tossed “Crank that sh*t up!” tees to the eager crowd, both before and after the heart of the show: the 3D Vision Surround technology that enables games to be shown in 3D on multiple monitor setups.
The 3D on display was impressive in some demos and games, and a bit ho-hum in others. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 possessed an incredible amount of depth, but World of Warcraft didn’t impress the majority of the audience. (This could be chalked up to a demo that didn’t run as smoothly as planned; I saw an absolutely stunning uses of 3D Vision at a recent EA event.)
The new cards will be available for purchase within 14 days at an unspecified price.
