Play Classic Atari Games Online
Posted in: Today's ChiliHappy 40th birthday to Atari. Yes, in September 1972 Atari launched with their first arcade game – Pong. Our lives would never be the same. But Atari wants you to experience the glory of their classic games via the comfort of your computer and the Internet. Welcome to Atari Arcade. We thought the Atari 2600 was ‘robust’ in the 70’s and 80’s. Imagine what those games will do with web technology!
In anticipation of (and partnership with) the Windows 8 & IE 10 release and the launch of touch devices using the new platform and browser our favorite classics become new again. Use your finger instead of the joystick. No upgrade in your future? No problem. Atari Arcade games are compatible with Windows 7 using IE9. Arcade is compatible with Chrome and Firefox, but somewhat ad-supported, directing you to download the latest IE browser.
Games are built in HTML5 and allow multi-player compatibility. Current classics available include Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Pong, Super Breakout and more. Expect additional games in the future. Atari is also giving developers a chance to build games for the Atari Arcade platform including a software development kit and tutorials for building HTML5 games. Read more about the project and access developer links on the IE blog. And check out the video below to learn more about how the games were brought into the 21st century.
