‘Prayers For Bobby’ Receives DVD Re-Release, Special Screening For National Coming Out Day
Posted in: Today's ChiliTo celebrate National Coming Out Day, a screening of “Prayers For Bobby” was held in New York City on Friday night with the film’s star, Sigourney Weaver, in attendance to talk about the making of the film and the impact it has had.
“Prayers For Bobby,” based on the book of the same name, tells the true story of Mary Griffith, a religious mother who is unable to accept her gay son, Bobby. He commits suicide and in the wake of his death, Griffith comes to terms with her own homophobia and finds support in new community in groups like PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians And Gays).
When the movie premiered on Lifetime in 2009 it was met with universal acclaim and was eventually nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Made for Television Movie and an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie nomination for Weaver (her role also garnered her a nomination for Best Actress at the Golden Globes and Screen Actor Guild Awards).
