Shoe Phone Bring Spy-Wannabes Pipe Dream to Life

shoe_phone.jpgIn parodies of spy flicks, quirky gadgets are an essential element; it’s already part of the humor no matter how clichéd it is. One of the most clichéd devices is the shoe-phone; something, which up ’til now remained fodder for fiction. Australia IT expert Paul Gardner-Stephen believes it’s a great idea to bring the shoe-phone to life and that’s exactly what he did. So how does one work a shoe-phone in the first place?

“The phone rings, you slip off the shoe then you open the heel, press the button and you’re talking in around the same time it would take to fumble in a bag and pull one out,” says the inventor.

Gardner-Stephen created a stage prop version of the device for the theatrical presentation of “Get Smart” and according to him, there’s been so much interest that a public release could be possible. In fact, he wants to work on a revamped version upgraded with parts that could save medical information and even measure pulse and blood pressure. I’m not too keen of the idea of having to take off a shoe every time I answer a call, but the inventor assures that he’s already “walked several hundred meters outside talking into the shoe and no one really paid much attention.” Sweet.
