Technorati is best known as a blog search engine– they track blogs. And while Technorati was really useful for a lot of people at one point, I don’t think they’re doing so well. I think many of their troubles started after Google Blog Search stepped on their turf.
After six months worth of work, they launched a brand new refresh that they’re hoping will appeal to more people – a broader audience. After taking a look at it, the very first thing I noticed was the ticker at the top (unfortunately). It’s small, and hard to read which didn’t leave me with a very good first impression. I wasn’t quite sure what purpose it is supposed to serve.
So now what is it that they’re trying to do with this new design and the list of changes? Well, it appears as though they’re trying to incorporate a bit of everything that people are looking for – not just blogs anymore. Now there are searches for the blogs, but also photos, videos, music, and events.
With the incorporation of all of this other “stuff” it seems to me as though they realize that they won’t be able to beat Google Blog Search, so this is another way for them to try and keep themselves going.
I used to use Technorati regularly, but I don’t think I can say I’ve used it once within the last six months because it’s just not what it used to be. While the interface does look cleaner, and easier to use, I still don’t think there’s enough of a value for me to go back.
Steve Rubel wrote about this topic earlier today, and his title was very fitting – “Blog Search is Dead and Google Killed It.” In his article, he mentions Google’s launch of the Universal Search Algorithm and the changes that we’ve been seeing with web search engines. A lot has changed over the last year or two, and Steve thinks that the “live web search engines like Technorati” are coming to a close. I think I’d have to agree.
So go on over to Technorati, take a look around, and let us know what you think. If you use Technorati on a regular basis, you’ll probably have more of an opinion. I’m disappointed they’ve taken their focus away from blogging, because I have always associated blogging with Technorati. They went hand in hand together. Not so much anymore, but I guess they really didn’t have much of a choice.
