I don’t know about you, but I am quite sure that folks who actually lay their eyes upon the $499.95 World’s Only Self-Righting Object would most probably think that this is nothing but a waste of money. After all, why bother with this “high tech paperweight” as some might call it? Well, before we jump into any hasty conclusions as to what this particular device could be, let us take a closer look at it. Known as the Gömböc, it has been touted to be the world’s only homogenous, convex, self-righting object. It will be different from all of the other inhomogeneous self-righting novelties that come with weighted bases, as the Gömböc itself will be made of solid stainless steel. The secret in remaining self-righting all the time? It will rely solely upon its unique curvilinear surface so that it can always achieve equilibrium regardless of its starting position.
Since it is totally convex, which means that every single point on its surface will bulge outward, this would make it similar in geometry to the shell of the radiated tortoise (Astrochelys radiata), where the animal can self-right itself without having to make any use of its limbs. This is a mathematical impossibility in two dimensions, and the Gömböc barely exists in three-dimensional space, functioning as a precise representation of minimal flatness and thinness. Truly, this is an enigma worth picking up.
