Steve Jobs drops knowledge on earnings call: calls out Google and RIM, says 7-inch tablets are ‘DOA’ (Update: complete Jobs audio!)

Steve Jobs hit today’s earnings call with the power of words. In a tone that could be described as “righteous anger” or perhaps just “reppin,” Steve launched into a five minute rant that hit hard against RIM’s entire business model, Android sales numbers and software fragmentation, and the impending wave of Android tablets. With the iPhone surpassing RIM, Steve says that he “[doesn’t] see them catching up in the foreseeable future.” As for Android sales, Steve takes issues with the market share figures that are currently floating around, saying that 275k iOS devices were activated on average per day last month, compared to Android’s most recent estimate of 250k per day — though he does admit that Android outshipped iPhone in the June quarter, during the “transition” to iPhone 4. That wasn’t Steve’s only problem with Android, he takes major issue with the fragmentation and the onus he believes it puts on the user: “we believe integrated will trump fragmented every time.”

Oh, and 7-inch tablets? You’re in for a bag of hurt. Steve pretty much outright killed any potential for 7-inch iPad rumors, saying that the software just isn’t right for that size (“This size is useless unless you include sandpaper so users can sand their fingers down to a quarter of their size.”), and that users have no need for a pocket sized tablet when they already have a smartphone. He called the iPad’s upcoming competition in the space “DOA.” After he calmed down a bit, the call entered a Q&A period, where Steve was happy to point out that the iPad has already surpassed Macintosh in sales, and that it’s going to affect laptop computers: “it’s not if, it’s when.” We’ll get a copy of the audio and put it up as soon as possible… like most CEO outbursts, this is not one to be missed. Hit up our liveblog of the call for a bit more context, and you can try the source link for Apple’s stream of the entire earnings shindig.

Update: We just ripped the first part of the call, which featured Steve’s prepared remarks — we’ll have an edited version of the Q&A session in just a bit.

Update 2: And here’s an edited version of the Q&A with just Jobs’s answers — hit the source link for Apple’s archive of the whole thing with Peter and Tim’s answers as well.

Update 3: And just for the completists out there, here’s an MP3 of both segments combined.

Android-based Archos 43 PMP up for pre-order, should ship out soon

Archos swore up and down that this one was set to ship in “mid-October,” which means that the pre-order link at Amazon should switch over in a matter of nanoseconds, minutes or hours. For those in need of a refresher, the Archos 43 is an Android-based portable media player with a 4.3-inch touchpanel, support for a zillion (give or take) file formats, an HDMI output and integrated WiFi. The 16GB model is available to claim for $249.99, so if you’ve been waiting for your chance to hop in the purchase line, this is it. Don’t blow it.

[Thanks, Zayne]

HTC HD7 vs. Desire HD: battle of the 4.3-inchers

Come October 21, European smartphone buyers will be faced with the enviable choice of having to pick between two 4.3-inch handsets from HTC bearing the latest and greatest OS from their respective camps. The HD7 will be one of the flag-bearing Windows Phone 7 devices, whereas the Desire HD — which is already sneaking out into retail in some small quantities — offers the finest Froyo dessert Google has yet cooked up, replete with some extra sprinkles of Sense-ible enhancements. We’ll have full reviews of both in the coming days, but for now, we thought we’d whet your appetite with a tour round their oversized bodies, both in pictorial form below and on video, right after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Tab up for pre-order at Carphone Warehouse for £530

We continue that elusive hunt for an official Galaxy Tab price with the most reliable (though still not authoritative) number yet: £530 ($850) from the Carphone Warehouse. Already announced as one of the first retailers to offer the device in the UK on that November 1 launch date, the Warehouse outfit has now set its price for the 16GB Tab at exactly the level of the 3G-equipped iPad. Coincidence? We think not. This is highly likely to be Samsung’s final pre-subsidy pricing, leaving it up to network operators to tempt us with some aggressive discounts. We can only hope.

[Thanks, Middy]

Samsung Galaxy Tab redesigned for KDDI, hitting Japan in late February as SMT-i9100

Japan’s KDDI is in the midst of its biannual hardware refresh and in among its new roster of phones is a familiar 7-inch slate device we’re more familiar with as the Galaxy Tab. Samsung has stripped all branding (and 3G, boo!) from the SMT-i9100, while refashioning its exterior a little and letting KDDI throw in a bit of custom au-branded software aboard. Beyond the cosmetic changes, which include the capacitive buttons being aligned for landscape (rather than portrait) utilization, you’re mostly looking at the same machine as the rest of the world, with a 1024 x 600 resolution, 512MB of RAM, MicroSD expandability, and a built-in webcam. The internal storage is quite a bit more frugal at 4GB, but you will get a handy docking cradle as a consolation prize, plus a mobile router that’ll turn this into something very similar to Verizon’s iPad plus MiFi offering in the US. All that said, KDDI won’t have the i9100 on sale until February, by which time the Android tablet market could be somewhat better populated.

SK Telecom’s Android action figures as flexible as the OS itself (video)

Here you go: Androski, the skiing Android mascot. He certainly gets more exercise than you (at least he meets more snow bunnies), and he’ll look great on your desk. Too bad he’s only available from SK Telecom way off yonder in the Republic of Korea. Of course, this ain’t the first Android toy we’ve seen in this space, but it’s certainly the most athletic! See for yourself after the break.

Update: It looks like there’s actually a variety of places to get the figures, not just SK Telecom — there’s also KT, LG U+ and some other names at the bottom of the website that we’re not terribly familiar with.

Advent Vega tablet won’t come with Android Market, might get it as part of Gingerbread update (video)

Lack of Google’s official app store has been a thorn in the side of would-be Android tablet makers for a good long while, and it looks like the Tegra 2-powered Advent Vega will be no exception when it hits the high street tomorrow. Electricpig took the £249 device for a spin, chatting up Advent product manager Adam Lockyer the whole time, and discovered that while the 10-inch tablet will come with the 5,000-app-strong Archos AppsLib store, it won’t have Android Market at launch. “The plan is that when you get to January time, there’s a new release of Android and you’ll be able to get the marketplace on this product,” Lockyer said, suggesting that maybe — just maybe — the availability of Android Market itself might be one of the fragmentation issues Google intends to fix in Gingerbread. Wouldn’t that be nice? Video after the break.

[Thanks, Chak I.]

Android ‘Ice Cream’ the sweet toothed followup to Honeycomb?

Ah, the age old alphabetical dessert guessing game. Pretty soon we’ll have more future Android versions named than existing ones on the market. And you know what? That’s okay, because we’re hungry. Apparently the President of ARM, Tudor Brown, spilled the vanilla beans to Elizabeth Woyke of Forbes, saying that Android 4.0 will be called “Ice Cream,” and while it seems like a bit of an obvious choice for an “I” dessert, that’s never stopped Google’s crack naming crew before. (Donut, anybody?) Somehow we get the feeling that Google spends a lot less time thinking about potential names for desserts than we do, and that’s alright: they’ve got a lot of OS work to do. Us? We just have to whine about Android fragmentation for an hour or so a week on the podcast. Hardly a full load.

Samsung Transform review

With Epic 4G styling, a front-facing camera and a $150 post-rebate price, it’s easy to mistake the Samsung Transform for a high-end phone. Don’t. The reality is that it’s a evolution of Samsung’s mid-range Moment and Intercept more than anything else — you’re paying an additional $50 here to get a front-facing camera, an LED flash and a few welcome tweaks, but the same ho-hum performance plus a few new annoyances to boot. Where does it improve and where does it fail? Find out in our full review.

Angry Birds Android App Launched

angry_birds_logo.jpg

I told myself I wasn’t going to get hooked, but it all happened so fast. I downloaded the Angry Birds Demo to my Droid, and ten minutes later, I couldn’t put the thing down, sitting on the subway, ignoring my fellow passengers, while slingshotting birds into the rickety structures.

Honestly, my only saving grace was the fact that the demo (Angry Birds Lite) is only 15 levels–all of which I quickly beat.

I’ve been simultaneously anticipating and dreading this day–the full version of Angry Birds is available for Google’s Android operating system. Right. Now.

Interestingly, while the demo version of the app was made available through Google’s Android Market, the game’s manufacturer, Rovio, has opted to sell this version through the third-party app store GetJar. The good news, however, is that unlike its iPhone counterpart, the full Android version is totally free,

It’s ad-supported, actually. And there will be some in-game purchase available as well. The extremely frustrated will be able to buy the Mighty Eagle, for example.

There goes my free time.
