Samsung Galaxy GT-I7500 unboxed, “Google Experience” distinction now clear as mud

The HTC Hero and T-Mobile myTouch 3G aren’t the only Android phones making waves this week: the Samsung Galaxy GT-I7500 also launched on O2 Germany, and this is the first unboxing we’ve seen. Continuing the confusion over what handsets actually get the full Google blessing, this version of the I7500 runs pretty much bone-stock Android, but isn’t a “Google Experience” phone, which in this case apparently means that firmware updates have to be loaded manually over USB instead of being pushed over the air. If you’re keeping track, that’s now a third axis of differentiation between Google-branded Android handsets and everything else, and we’re starting to think no one really knows what all the rules and differences actually are — hey, Eric, maybe you could set down that BlackBerry for a minute and sort all this out?

Rockchip plans on slashing Android phone prices with new RK2808 chipset

Rockchip, already a favorite among dirt cheap, feature-laden PMPs, has its sights set on Android and we couldn’t be happier. The company sees Android’s free nature being the perfect match for the Chinese market, and plans to release its low-cost RK2808 chipset in October to take advantage of that. In addition to Android, Rockchip claims the RK2808 enables additional multimedia capability over what’s currently available in Android handsets. No matter how well the RK2808 pans out, it’s obvious that the second half of this year will mark a real explosion in Android, and if we could get some $100 or $200 unlocked imports mixed in there somewhere, we certainly wouldn’t be complaining.

Google CEO Schmidt avoids the dog food, captures memories with BlackBerry

Investment firm Allen & Co’s Sun Valley, Idaho media summit is a place for the world’s wealthiest and most influential decision-makers to chill out, enjoy a couple double Macallans on the rocks, and talk shop. It might even be a rare opportunity to escape to the comfort of a competitor’s product — a guilty pleasure you wouldn’t dream of indulging in more buttoned-up environments. Google CEO Eric Schmidt was caught snapping a candid shot from a BlackBerry (we’re pretty sure it’s a Curve 8900) at the event — and yes, granted, Google makes apps for BlackBerrys, but when there’s a phone that bears your company’s own name, it feels just a little bit like cheating, doesn’t it? We guess the big, ratty Google sticker adds back a sliver of street cred, but it’s not like this thing’s packing some furiously awesome camera that a Magic, Dream, or Hero doesn’t. How’s Gmail treatin’ you there, Eric? You’re using that, at least, right?

Google: we’re cool with Exchange on Google-branded Android phones

Okay, this gets a bit confusing, so bear with us. Back when HTC first unveiled the Magic, the company said that any Android device with a customized build — and that includes adding support for Microsoft Exchange — has to drop the “with Google” logo as per Google’s rules. Indeed, that notion seemed to be validated by the all the international Android phones that have Exchange but no branding. Cut to present day and the T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G, which looks to have both the “with Google” backing and Exchange support, contrary to previous assertions. Did the search engine giant soften its policy? We spoke with a company representative who told us, surprisingly, that it has “never been Google’s policy” to deprive its branded devices of Exchange support, and that if another phone maker wants to add it and keep that logo plastered on the phone, that’s A-OK. In all honesty, we never really put too much stock into the Google logo on the phone, but if it’s really just been one huge misunderstanding that’s prevented our G1 from having Exchange, well, we’re gonna be quite nonplussed for many weeks to come.

Creative Zii and Zii EGG touchscreen players with HD cameras served up by FCC

Guess who’s back? Creative. Hard to believe, we know, but the company we’ve all but forgotten looks ready to make a comeback in the portable audio / video game. Creative Labs Zii and Zii EGG just made their first appearance at the FCC. Can’t say that we’re too enthused by the “EGG” moniker but we’re definitely liking the looks of that “HD Camera” module along the backside of these “MP4 players with touchscreens” and 802.11b/g WiFi. That “developer edition” is also a good sign that Creative is looking to make this a software platform a la the ol’ iPod touch only with Creative’s Zii system-on-chip architecture secret sauce. In fact, these devices could very well be running Android atop Creative’s ZMS-05 chipset as we saw back in February. Welcome back Creative, you’ve got until September or so before Apple adds a camera to its own iPod touch… best get to work.

HTC Hero pre-release model taken for a spin, previewed in Russia

It’s been less than two weeks since we laid hands on HTC‘s latest Android masterpiece, the Hero, and so while we wait to see it again, the cats at Russian site Mobile-review have gotten some extensive time with a pre-release engineering sample, and give it some high marks for those in the “tech geek” demographic who are looking to pick one up. Some caveats to be had, including the use of pre-release Sense UI firmware and the curious case of calling the screen resistive, especially since the model we used was definitely the more finger-friendly capacitive, and all the promotional material we’ve seen show a capacitive model in use. Still, it’s well worth a read, if for nothing else than a glimpse at the sample pictures / video we can expect to capture with the phone ourselves.

[Thanks, Fegan]

Rumor: Nokia Working on Android Phone

Everyone else is working on an Android handset, so why shouldn’t Nokia? The Finnish handset manufacturer is reported working on a new touchscreen smartphone using Google’s open operating system, which is set for debut at September’s Nokia World conference, according to The Guardian.

Since the launch of Android, Nokia has been hedging its bets on Symbian, with plans to offer that OS free of charge. The company, naturally, is not yet commenting on this latest round of rumors.

Nokia claimed to be working on Android phone for unveiling later this year (updated)

Talk of a possible Android / Nokia tie-up has been ongoing since time immemorial, and the latest fuel to the fire comes from the Guardian which is sourcing “industry insiders” as saying that the world’s largest phone manufacturer will reveal an Android-powered touchscreen handset at its Nokia World event this September. Though Nokia itself has never truly ruled out the possibility of working with Open Handset Alliance code, a move into Android right now would truly be an odd one — granted, the Symbian Foundation is probably on thin ice any way you look at it, but even without S60 and its successors in the mix in the long term, Nokia still has Maemo quietly reaching platform maturity in the background with rumors of an imminent MID / superphone hybrid swirling in recent months. It seems that adopting Android (even if only for a select number of models) would be an admission on Nokia’s part that it has failed to be a Maker of Standards, despite its overwhelming size and market position — not to mention a major bet that it can continue to win customers based on the strength of its hardware alone, since it’d now be working with a common platform adopted by dozens of companies large and small. So, here’s the million- (or maybe billion-) dollar question: all things being equal, can Nokia outdo HTC and Samsung on the same platform?

Update: And now the Nokia spokesman response: “Absolutely no truth to this whatsoever, everyone knows that Symbian is our preferred platform for advanced mobile devices.” Yes, unfortunately / fortunately, we do know that.

Sony Ericsson “Rachael” Android XPERIA handset unveiled?

Hello, beautiful. Danish phone site Mobil has uncovered “internal documents” on what appears to be Sony Ericsson’s upcoming Android-based handset, an XPERIA number codenamed Rachael. Under the hood is a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, HSPA and an 8 megapixel camera. It’s unclear how big the touchscreen is, and other details are scarce — there is a 3.5mm headphone jack, so that’s nice, but unless we’re severely misguided, there doesn’t seem to be a slide-out keyboard tucked away inside this thin chassis.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
