Apple Dumps 1st Gen iPad into Clearance Bin, Starts at $399

Poor first generation iPad. First Steve leaves it for a younger, thinner model, and now he’s dumped it into the clearance bin of history. Yep, the minute that the iPad 2 was announced, Apple moved its predecessor over the site’s clearance section. Those not particularly interested in things like cameras and white bezels can pick up an older iPad starting at $399

CE-Oh no he didn’t!: Steve Jobs misquotes Samsung, asks what you’re gonna do about it

Hey, remember all the fun last month when Samsung’s Lee Young-hee said that Galaxy Tab sales were “quite smooth” but everyone heard “quite small?” Yeah, well, Steve Jobs doesn’t. Before unveiling the iPad 2 today the man in black and denim listed that early misquote — which was widely and officially corrected — as evidence to prove that the iPad‘s competition was floundering. Admittedly that isn’t far from the truth, but there’s no need to go putting words in other executives’ mouths to make a point.

Apple unveiled the iPad 2 on Wednesday, showing off a handful of upgrades intended to cement the tablet’s market-leading position.

With dual cameras (front and back), an upgraded A5 processor, support for HD video recording and playback and a thinner profile, the iPad 2 looks to be a worthy successor to the first model.

The iPad 2 will be available for purchase starting March 11, Apple says.

Despite the increased power, Apple claims that the new iPad will have the same battery life as the first model: 10 hours of active use and about a month of standby.

It lacks several features that competing, Android-based tablets offer, such as a USB port or SD card reader.

The new iPad will come in two colors (black and white), will offer 3G data connectivity from AT&T or Verizon as an option, and will have the same starting price as the first model ($500 for a Wi-Fi only 16-GB version).

We’ll have close-up photos and hands-on impressions shortly. In the meantime, enjoy our images of the iPad 2 and Apple executives from Wednesday’s press event.

iPad 2 is Also an Amp

ipad garage band amp.jpg
Also on the schedule for today’s event: Garage Band for the iPad. The latest version of the app has a number of of impressive features including eight track recording, 250 loops, and guitar and synth sounds. The oddest/coolest part of the app, however, has to be the ability to use your iPad as a guitar amp.
Plug it in (through some manner of adapter, we’re assuming) and the iPad will mimic the sound of “classic amps and stompboxes.” For those less music amongst us, the app also has “smart instruments,” which will let you play some approximation of an acoustic guitar with pre-picked chords.
The app, like the iPad 2, will be available on March 11th. Garage Band will be a little cheaper though, as a $4.99 download.

iPad 2 vs. Motorola Xoom vs. HP TouchPad vs. BlackBerry PlayBook: the tale of the tape

You might recall we ran this comparison about a month back when HP’s TouchPad was announced, but now we’re back with a full set of 2011 devices as Apple’s brand new iPad 2 has joined the fray. There’s no need for excessive introductions, really, just leap past the break to get swalloped up by an avalanche of next-generation tablet specs.

iPad 2 Gets “Smart Cover”

ipad 2 smartcover pink.jpg

A cool new gadget needs a cool new case, right? This here is the Smart Cover for the iPad 2. According to Jobs, the cover was “designed alongside the iPad 2.” The cover the iPad’s screen, complete with a micro-fiber interior that “cleans the screen when you open it.” Built in magnets hold it to the device and “auto-align” it to the screen. Opening it up will wake up the iPad and closing it will put it back to sleep.

The cover also folds up into a triangular shape, serving as a horizontal stand for the device when it’s in use. The case comes in a number of different colors. It’ll run you $39. Apple is also releasing a $69 leather case for the new iPad.

White iPad 2 Unveiled

ipad 2 white flat game.jpg

While you’re sitting at home (or work, more likely) filling out the iPad 2 rumors checklist, here’s a biggie. As predicted by a number of blurry parts photos floating around the Web this week, the iPad 2 will, in fact, be shipping in white.
This news is made doubly interesting by the fact that the March 11th shipping date for the new tablet means that it will most likely ship before the white iPhone 4, which has been repeatedly delayed since first being announced over the summer.
Seeing as how the iPad has a front facing camera, the immediate question here seems to be whether Apple has fixed the photo/light situation that was rumored to be the source of the delay, or whether it was a different technical problem altogether.
Also, does this mean that we’ll be seeing that white iPhone 4 soon, after all? Apple is saying that the thing is arriving in spring, and judging from the weather outside, that’s rapidly approaching.

iPad 2 first hands-on! (update: even more video!)

Well there you have it folks — the absurdly thin new iPad 2. We just got our hands all over the next greatest tablet from Apple and it’s… very much the same, save for that new body. There’s no question that the industrial design is top notch, and we did notice some speedier behavior when jumping around — but the core OS remains unchanged, so this won’t be a major shock. We’re spending more time with the device and getting impressions, but for now, feast your eyes on the galleries below.

Update: Okay, we’ve had a chance to play around the with iPad 2 some more, and here are our big takeaways from the experience.

  • This thing is insanely fast. We’re not joking — it’s blazingly fast. Everything the iPad 2 does feels like it’s on turbo. We’re uploading a video of the some evidence of this, you’ll be appropriately stunned.
  • The design feels great in your hands. Sleek, super thin — much nicer to hold than the previous version. Definitely has more of a magazine than book feel. Everything is tight and solid. It is pretty amazing how thin they’ve gotten the device.
  • Even software made for the first generation device feels better here. Safari is definitely sped up. Games looked great on-screen, though obviously there are no updates to the resolution of screen technology here.
  • This is an evolutionary step, but we definitely don’t feel like it’s lacking for features. People are going to gobble these up when they see the new apps.

Update 2: We’ve got some video after the break!

Update 3: More videos!

iPad 2 vs. original iPad: what’s changed?

Shockingly enough, Apple found plenty of things to tweak and update on its spectacularly successful iPad. Alright, so the screen resolution didn’t improve and we didn’t get that ultra-speedy Thunderbolt connector on board, but the iPad 2 is thinner and lighter while somehow becoming more powerful — a 1GHz dual-core Apple A5 SOC lurks within. Check out our full breakdown of the key spec differences in the chart after the break. It’s great fun, we promise!

P.S. – While you’re poring over these stats, don’t forget that Apple’s decided to slap a $100 price cut on the original iPads, making them eminently more desirable today than they were yesterday.
