Dell's Studio 15 line getting ATI graphics boost?

It’s not too often that a new product is leaked via its own support site — in fact most companies can’t even get drivers up ahead of release — but if an update to Dell’s download database is correct the Studio 15 is about to receive an update in the graphics department. A new model called the Studio 1555 was added yesterday to the Dell download site and included there is a driver for ATI’s Mobility Radeon HD 4570 GPU. The Studio 15’s current Intel 4500MHD is also listed, meaning the faster 4570 will likely be an option, and a desirable one at that. No further information about this update or new model is available, but if you were looking for a new Studio you might just want to hold off until we can figure out what’s up. If, on the other hand, you were looking for a new studio apartment then go for it — we’ve heard that now is an excellent time to buy.

Engadget’s recession antidote: win an ATI Radeon HD 4650 graphics card

Yup, all ’round the globe, economies are taking a hit, and people are losing jobs, houses and investments (take, for instance, the news that Netgear had an unexpectedly bad fourth quarter, as well as the rumors that both Asustek and MSI will be cutting workers). So we here at Engadget are committed to trying to counter-attack a little bit of that suffering by handing out a new gadget every day (except for weekends) to lucky readers until we run out of stuff / companies stop sending things. Today we’ve got an ATI Radeon HD 4650 graphics card to offer up. Read the rules below (no skimming — we’re omniscient and can tell when you’ve skimmed) and get commenting!

IBuyPower dishes Dragon-based gaming desktops under $1,500

Yet again, IBuyPower is stepping out with a few new gaming rigs for the bargain-minded among us. The most recent duo to be outed by the company is the Gamer HAF 91B and the Gamer Fire, both of which are based on AMD’s latest Dragon platform and Phenom II CPU. The former gets going at just $999 and includes the Phenom II X4 920 processor, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a 500GB SATA II hard drive, a dual-layer DVD writer, ATI’s 512MB Radeon HD 4850 graphics card, a CoolerMaster HAS 932 case and a 550-watt power supply. The more fiery sibling ups the ante with a Phenom II X4 940 CPU, a 750GB HDD, LG GGC-H20L Blu-ray drive and an NZXT Guardian 921 chassis. ‘Course, you’ll be paying $1,439 for that one, but either way you’ll be keeping things below the evidently magical $1.5k mark. AMD announces ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series graphics chips

NVIDIA has already given its laptop graphics offerings a bit of a boost at CES, and now AMD has followed suit, with it taking the wraps off its new ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series chips. As you may have guessed, these are based on the same core architecture as AMD’s 4000 series of desktop graphics cards, and they promise to be as much as twice as fast as their 3000 series predecessors. Helping out significantly on that front is the use of GDDR5 memory, a first for laptop graphics, as well as an increase in the number of stream processing units (800 on the top end HD 4870 and 4850), and a new, cooler 55nm manufacturing process. In addition to those top end graphics options, AMD will also introduce a couple of new 4600 series cards, which use the same GDDR3 memory and 320 stream processing units as before, but are able to fit in tighter enclosures and use less power. Look for the first laptops equipped with the graphics to start rolling out by the end of March.
