Insane Russian casemod shamelessly puts good taste to bed once and for all

We see plenty of wild casemods around here — staying on the pulse of what’s new with the cool kids is part of our jobs. We’ve never really seen anything like this one, however. We don’t know a terrible lot about the case — just that it’s made of what appears to be solid evil dipped in bronze, and lit by the blood of a terrifying hellbeast. Regardless: it’s going to look great in your living room… once you convince Satan to sell it to you for a reasonable price, that is. One more terrifically horrendous photo after the break.

Eco-friendly Clayton iHouse on sale, coming to a highbrow trailer park near you

Clayton Homes, a US-based company which makes and sells manufactured (prefab) homes, is getting in on the i-naming game with their latest bit of construction. The iHouse is a prefabricated, customizable house that is so energy efficient that Clayton estimates it costs about $1 per day to cover all of its electricity and heating needs. The house makes use of solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, thick walls, heavy insulation, a rainwater-catching system, a tankless water heater, and dual flush toilets to meet its eco-friendly goals. The company, which sold about 30,000 manufactured homes last year, thinks that the iHouse could quickly come to represent about 10 percent of its business. Prototypes of the house — which at around 1,000 square feet costs $140,000 completely furnished — are popping up all over the US, and as of last Saturday, are officially on sale nationwide. One more photo after the break.

NES gamepad mouse is the most amazing piece of industrial design in the history of humankind

Apparently as of right now, this stunning piece of high art is just a foam model mock-up, but listen to us, mouse manufacturers of the world: if you build this, we will give you every penny we have to own it. Our only gripe? The D-pad should definitely be up top for navigation duties. Still… where’s the waiting list?

BlackBerry Pip-Boy theme: a post-apocalyptic nightmare world in the palm of your hand

Look, there’s really nothing special going on here — it’s just a theme for BlackBerry devices. A totally, totally awesome theme for BlackBerry devices. So awesome, in fact, that it makes our corporate-issued / controlled phone seem somehow cool again. What are you waiting for? Go get it.

[Via Gizmodo]

Update: Sadly, it seems the theme has been removed at Bethesda’s request — because, you know, this is obviously bad PR for the Fallout series… or something. Thanks, Behzad!

Giant mechanized rhinoceros beetle makes its Japanese TV debut

While it’s certainly not all that uncommon to see giant robots wandering the streets of Japan, it looks like even the jaded folks on the Japanese TV show “Nanikore Chin Hakkei” were impressed by this massive beetle robot built by an Ibaraki man, who apparently spent a full 11 years toiling away at it. Of course, it’s not a fully autonomous robot (thankfully), but it is able to be controlled from afar with a truly impressive remote control, or from the inside, which is fully kitted out with a spaceship-style cockpit and plenty of seating for passengers. It also isn’t quite able to fully stand up on all those legs, which are instead used to pull it along the ground as some wheels provide a bit of extra assistance. Still, it’s quite a sight to behold, and we can’t think of a single reason why you wouldn’t want to check out the video after the break — unless, of course, you hate things that are awesome.

Teenage Engineering’s OP-1 pocket synth caught on video

The OP-1 is for real… and we’ve got the proof. It’s an ambitious little project, to be sure — a battery powered pocket synth / sampler / DAW controller / drum sequencer — and one we’re looking forward to getting our hands on when it finally becomes available. According to the heads behind Teenage Engineering, that day should come within 10-12 months. But don’t take our word for it — check out the video after the break.

Teenage Engineering’s OP-1 synthesizer sure to entice Mark Mothersbaugh

We’ve been thinking about picking up our own little synth lately, so we were pretty stoked to see Teenage Engineering’s OP-1 — even if it’s not near production yet. The pocket-sized synthesizer — which will also double as a controller for a digital workstation — is going to boast eight synth models and eight samplers, effects, a sequencer and an arpeggiator. There’s a built-in mic, speaker, and, excitingly, an FM radio. On the controller side of the device, it’s got transport controls, four rotary encoders, plus 16 quick keys. There’s no word yet on when (if) this thing will hit the market, though they’re taking volunteers for beta testing as of now. Sounds awesome, looks rad: sign us up!

Update: Video of a display test of the OP-1 after the break!

NASA’s Kepler spacecraft ready to begin searching for other, cooler “earths”

NASA‘s just declared its Kepler spacecraft “ready to launch.” In case you’re not already in the know on this one, the Kepler’s mission will be to jaunt out into space, then watch a massive patch of it for 3.5 years to see if there are any signs of habitable planets similar to Earth. The craft will be looking mostly for planets that revolve around stars similar to the Sun, and it will be able to watch about 100,000 of them continuously, unlike the beleaguered but awesome Hubble telescope. The Kepler has a 0.95-meter diameter telescope, and the project has been in the works for about 25 years. It will finally launch tonight, on a Delta 2 rocket. Check out a few images of the Kepler after the break, hit up NASA’s Kepler site for the full details of the mission.

[Thanks, Matthew]

Adtec unleashes Bluetooth wristband, delusions of grandeur

Adtec‘s just released its Bluetooth wristband, which enables hands-free — well, sort of. The band, which is equipped with a speaker and volume control, connects to your cell phone via Bluetooth, and comes in white or gray. The company suggests one might find this little gadget useful while fishing or running. Maybe it’s just us, but we were thinking it might be neat to use it while conducting highly confidential espionage missions, too. Or… you know, blogging. Pair it with this guy and you’ve got a match made in heaven! It’s available now in Japan for ¥5,980 — about $65 — but will probably (sadly) never makes its way across the waters to North America.

Meizu M8 defies the odds and officially goes on sale – again

Word on the street has it that the Meizu’s M8 — that vaporous iPhone killer from the east — is now officially on sale, as of February 18. For real. Wait, you ask — wasn’t it available last week sometime? Well, yes and no. Apparently, the unit we’ve seen making the rounds was a beta version — if you slapped down your $440-ish dollars on that one, you got something with “a fair amount of problems to be ironed out,” according to DAP Review. The site, whose Chinese-to-English translator is apparently functioning better than ours, goes on to point out that while the test units had WiFi enabled, the final production version does not. A strange decision, sure, but this is a tale fraught with strange decisions. And danger. And excitement and glamor. By the way — we just hit up the official Meizu site, and the 16GB version of this device is “out of stock” — probably due to the rapturous reception the unit’s received all over the world.
