BlackBerry Curve 8900 finally available to one and all on T-Mobile

Alright, business customers, just wipe that smug grin off your faces, won’t you? The unwashed masses (read: us) have finally been given the green light to rush into T-Mobile stores (and online) to pick up the BlackBerry Curve 8900 for $199.99 on a two-year contract after rebates — not exactly the $149.99 we were hoping for, but we can always hope for Best Buy to get this sucker out the door for a few bucks less than T-Mobile proper.

Intel demos first-ever 32nm processors

Intel had a little roadmap event today to shed some light on its massive $7b fab investment, and the focus was mostly on the upcoming transition to 32nm processors — highlighted by the first-ever demo of a working 32nm Nehalem-based Westmere chip. It was just a demo, so there aren’t any hard benchmarks available, but eventually the tech will show up in the Calpella platform’s dual-core Clarkdale laptop processors that integrate two processor cores, a graphics core, and a memory controller all in a chip the size of one 45nm quad-core Clarksfield chip. (Yes, the codenames are confusing as hell.) Intel wouldn’t lock down the schedule for any of this stuff, but when we asked them about the rumored Calpella delays we heard about this morning we were told that parts of the platform will definitely go into production sometime in 2009. Video, slides, and the full press release after the break.

Dell Latitude XT2 multi-touch tablet with 11-hour battery now official (starts at $2,399)

VUDU permanently cuts retail price of movie set-top-box in half

We had a sinking feeling those promotional prices over the holidays wouldn’t stick once Santa had done his duties, but rather than ratcheting price tags back up entirely, it has decided to permanently reduce the retail price on its standard VUDU movie set-top-box by half. As of now, prospective buyers can snag a box for $149 (down from $299), while the more capacious VUDU XL is dropping from $999 to $499 (and that’ll include a gratis home theater connectivity software package). Also of note, the rack-mountable VUDU XL2 is stooping from $1,299 to $799 for those who prefer that form factor. So, these stickers low enough for you? Or are you really planning to wait ’til Christmas 2009 to score an even more special deal?

Amazon Kindle 2 announced: $359 on February 24

Just as expected, Amazon announced the second-generation Kindle ebook reader with the exclusive Stephen King novel UR today — the page actually went live during the press event. The new version will still cost $359, but it’s much thinner than the angular original — in fact, it’s thinner than an iPhone at just .36 inches. Arguably the biggest new feature is Read to Me, which can read any content on the device back to you in a decent-sounding computerized voice, but there’s also seven times more storage, a sharper 16-level e-ink display that turns pages 20 percent faster, 25 percent longer battery life, and a new five-way joystick that improves navigation. Amazon’s Whispernet service is also getting a feature bump, adding in Whispersync bookmarking — if you start reading a book on one Kindle, you can pick up again on any other Kindle automatically. Sadly, it’s still only available in white — the pink Kindle here is just a one-off made to promote UR. Video after the break.

A few more informations:

  • Amazon is still working on international release, but has nothing to announce at this time, and wouldn’t even confirm a launch this year.
  • Battery is non-removable.
  • There will be no Kindle 2-exclusive content, and some of the software improvements will be pushed to the original Kindle — Whispersync is a shoe-in, text-to-speech is a no.

We spent some time playing with the Kindle 2 hands-on — check it out right here!

Samsung melds slate, slider with Ultra Touch S8300

If having your cake and eating it too is just how you roll, you’re probably the kind of hard-to-please son of a gun that wants a numeric slider keypad to go along with your phone’s AMOLED WQVGA touchscreen. Wait, let us guess: you also want an 8 megapixel camera, AGPS with geotagging, integrated FM radio, stereo Bluetooth, and microSD support up to 16GB. And naturally, you want it all somehow magically packed into a shell measuring no more than 12.7mm thick. Well, guess what, sweet pea? Samsung’s gone and called your bluff with the rumored Ultra Touch S8300, earning itself an official announcement ahead of MWC — and as long as a real smartphone OS isn’t on your shopping list, this 7.2Mbps HSDPA monster should fit the bill. We don’t have launch territories or pricing just yet, but see that little “Barcelona” on the weather widget there? Yeah, we suspect we’ll be seeing plenty of this one on the Mobile World Congress show floor.

Official-looking Kindle 2 pictures and pricing leak out

We’re not going to call it official yet, but a bunch of very real-looking Kindle 2 press images just hit the tubes, and we’ve got to say we’re pretty convinced. Although the device itself looks basically the same as in those previously-leaked shots we saw back in October, there are some surprises in store: it’s way thinner, the back is apparently made of metal and there are stereo speakers at the bottom. We’ll admit to missing the polarizing ultra-80s look of the original, but this thing looks pretty sweet — too bad it’s still going to set you back $359 when it arrives on February 24. We’ll find out what’s what for sure on Monday — in the meantime check couple more shots after the break and way more at the read link.

[Thanks, Alex]

Leaked Samsung M7600 phone sports Bang & Olufsen sound, Helio looks

We don’t know exactly where this one came from… but these leaked photos appear to be of an Ocean-esque Samsung M7600. Here’s what we know about it, spec-wise: it’s an HSDPA phone which will have a 3 megapixel camera, GPS, a 2.8-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, and yes, a Bang & Olufsen amplifier. We understand that it’ll also sport some kind of of DJ scratching app — which should make your nightlife way more interesting — and that it’s supposedly set to appear sometime in May of this year (though we’d be surprised if we don’t see more of it at MWC). Check a few more shots after the break, and hit the read link to see the device in all its glory.

Communications Workers of America authorizes strike of 20,000 AT&T workers, could happen soon

It’s been a little under the radar, but AT&T Mobility’s been in contract talks with the Communications Workers of America on behalf of some 20,000 unionized workers, and things haven’t been going so well — in fact, the CWA just voted to authorize a strike if upcoming negotiations don’t improve. The union’s current contract actually expires tonight at midnight, but the strike won’t take place until the union’s executive board approves and the CWA president sets a date. For its part, AT&T says it maintains a good relationship with its unions — it has more unionized workers than any other carrier — and that the vote is just another part of the process, but that it’s prepared for all contingencies, including a strike. We’ll see what happens, stay tuned.

Xbox Live tallies 1 million Netflix Watch Instantly activations, 1.5 billion minutes served

Bad news first: there might be a bit more competition than you expected for that home theater giveaway. Good luck bringing down Netflix’s shooting star though, as if last week’s good news train wasn’t enough comes news that over a million Xbox Live Gold members have already downloaded and activated the Watch Instantly app since its NXE debut last November. That’s more than 10% of Netflix’s just announced 9.4 million subscribers who’ve already watched over 1.5 billion minutes of TV and movies through their consoles. They’re not the only ones happy, while streaming may be eating into DVD rentals, Xbox Live Marketplace rentals are up 174 percent year over year. The streaming library is up to 12,000 titles, with a “growing percentage” in high definition, for the rest of the celebratory details check the full PR after the break. Nothing left for us to say but congratulations and hey, if you get a minute, could you fix Nilay’s HD streaming on the Xbox? Thanks.
