Apple records another record quarter — $1.61B profit

Apple just announced its quarterly results, and it looks the brutal economy isn’t bruising the fruit at all — the company posted a record $1.61B profit on $10.17B in revenue. Adjusted to reflect the subscription accounting Apple uses for the iPhone and Apple TV, that’s $2.3B of income on $11.8B of revenue. Sales were all strong — Macs were up nine percent to 2.5M sold, iPods up three percent to 22.7M sold, and iPhones were up 88 percent to 4.3M sold. If you’re keeping track, that means Apple’s now sold well over 10M iPhone 3Gs on top of beating its goal of 10M total iPhones in 2008, which is pretty tremendous. Acting CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer are taking questions from analysts now, we’ll let you know if anything interesting happens — as you’d expect, the first question was “How’s Steve?” and it got basically a non-answer.

2:18PM – After rattling off Apple’s core goals and beliefs, Tim Cook said that “regardless of who is in what job, those values are so embedded in this company that Apple will do extremely well.” Neither him or Peter would speak to succession plans or comment on Steve’s health.

Apple quietly updates $999 white MacBook with unibody specs

Hmmm, what’s this? Did Apple just update its lowly, $999 white plastic polycarbonate MacBook to more closely align with its new unibody MacBooks? Why yes, yes it has… sometime in the last 3 days according to Google’s cache. So for the same $999 you now get that newer generation 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo processor with faster 1,066MHz frontside bus, 2GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory standard (up from 1GB), and integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics. Whitey is still stuck with DDR2 SDRAM though, not the speedier DDR3 found in the unibodies. Disk drive and other specs (including Firewire 400) appear to be the same. Getting ready for Snow Leopard’s OpenCL GPU support are we Apple?

Update: Bluetooth received a bump from 2.0 to 2.1 as well. Anything else?

[Thanks, Uncontrol]

Sanyo’s 2009 HD Xacti camcorder lineup brings a trio of world’s firsts

Engadget Japanese is attending a Sanyo presser where its much loved Xacti camcorders are being overhauled. The 5-strong mix of pistol-grip and new, horizontally-oriented camcorders includes several world’s firsts according to Sanyo: the world’s first to shoot progressive, Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 video at 60fps (models DMX-HD2000/FH11 pictured above), the world’s first waterproof HD cameras (DMX-CA9 and DMX-WH1 with 30x optical zoom), and world’s first HD camera to shoot 10 megapixel still images (DMX-CG10). All the cams shoot in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format for broad compatibility with devices and video editing software. The DMX-HD2000 will hit the streets first on February 6 with the rest to trickle out before April is up. No prices were announced but we expect these to be competitive, as always. The rest of the new models pictured after the break with full specifications just beyond the read link.

Verizon launching Wireless Network Extender femtocell on January 25

Sprint had the jump on this by a few months with its AIRAVE, but Verizon’s not far behind in bringing femotcells to the masses with its less-elegantly-named Wireless Network Extender later this month on the 25th. The little black box will puke out a cloud of CDMA covering up to 5,000 square feet of domicile with support for up to three simultaneous calls — enough for you, the hubby / missus, and little Joey / Susie to all be yapping away at the same time. Like Sprint’s solution, the Wireless Network Extender uses GPS to verify that you’re not creating little tiny Verizon networks in Laos, Kenya, or Uruguay and plugs into the internet source of your choice via Ethernet. It’ll be available in Verizon stores and online starting January 25 for $249.99 — not a bad deal for Verizon, considering you’re saving them the expense of erecting a tower.

Circuit City fails to be wanted, will now be liquidated

Even Circuit City’s CEO admitted that liquidation was a very real possibility if a sale of the company didn’t occur by January 16th, and needless to say, time’s up. According to a breaking report from the AP, the once colossal electronics retailer will indeed be forced to liquidate, which should bring happy times for bargain hunters and sad times for employees. Now that details are starting to flow in, we’re told that it will liquidate 567 of its US stores after failing to secure a buyer or refinancing deal. For those who care, Great American Group LLC, Hudson Capital Partners LLC, SB Capital Group LLC and Tiger Capital Group LLC have been chosen as liquidators.

[Thanks, Doug]

Peek for Life: $299.95 one-day sale means no monthly fees

Our biggest gripe with the Peek email-only handheld has always been the incredibly annoying $19.95 per month data plan. If you jump in today, however, you can forget all about those recurring charges. It seems the suits at Peek have finally stumbled upon what could actually be a viable business model for this unique handset, as they’re offering the unit up for $299.95 with data included for the life of the device. Unfortunately, the deal is a one-day only affair, but truthfully, we fully expect this option to become the norm in the not-too-distant future.

Motorola to lay off 4,000 starting immediately

It’s official: Moto’s pulling out the axe. The beleaguered manufacturer is no stranger to financial struggles at this point — nor layoffs, for that matter — but the latest round cuts some 6 percent of employees from Moto’s global operations, and 3,000 of the 4,000 will come directly from the handset division. The news comes along with a preliminary fourth quarter earnings estimate of a 7 to 8 cent per share loss (which isn’t really “earnings” when you think about it), so yeah, it’s business as usual out in Schaumburg: get lean and start making awesome products. Soon, Moto. Please.

Steve Jobs is taking a leave of absence from Apple due to health reasons

Apple has issued a statement saying that Steve Jobs is taking a leave of absence due to health reasons. Steve Jobs sent out a letter to Apple employees today saying that his previously-explained health problems are “more complex” than he at first thought, and that he plans to return in June. In the meantime Steve will be around for major strategic decisions, and Tim Cook (Apple’s Chief Operating Officer) will take over the day-to-day in his absence. AAPL is down around 8% in after hours trading. The full letter is below:

Team,

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

Sony VAIO GS series pops up in the FCC — a cheap Sony ultraportable?

We don’t have a lot to go on, but a machine called the VAIO GS just popped up in the FCC database, along with the usual nasty gub’ment photos. Doing some extremely rough back-of-the-napkin calculations, it looks like it’s Sony’s answer to the Dell Mini 12 — 11 inches wide with a 12ish-inch 4:3 screen. We’re also seeing an optional built-in optical drive, WiFi, Bluetooth, three USB ports, a PC Card slot (that’s what it’s marked — let’s hope it’s really ExpressCard), a Memory Stick slot, Ethernet and modem ports, and VGA out. We’re guessing the optical drive explains the netbook-ish hinge battery placement, but nothing explains how ugly this thing is — let’s hope the downgrade in style from the VAIO P comes with a corresponding downgrade in price. A few more shots after the break.

Update: As a few astute commenters have pointed out, this could be an updated US-bound version of the Japan-only VAIO G from 2006 — if things haven’t changed too much, you’re looking at a two-pound machine with a 12.1-inch display. We’ll see — the exterior is definitely a little different, and we don’t think the market is right for the VAIO G’s original $2,000 pricetag.

Motorola laying off throngs, focusing on Android alone for smartphones

Phone Scoop is reporting that doomsday is imminent for Motorola, possibly as soon as this week. First off, up to half of employees from the company’s handset division will be shown the door, though the other divisions — Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Home & Networks Mobility — will be unaffected. Fewer employees inevitably leads to fewer phones, and it’s being said that Moto will produce just twelve models per year; among smartphones, only Android will be considered. What’s more, the company is pulling out of April’s CTIA show — the largest mobile event in the States — so it looks like that Android gear won’t be coming until later on. We’ll have more on this as soon as we know what’s up.
