Nokia makes E7 QWERTY slider official: ‘beautiful and all business’ (update: specs)

Nokia’s just unveiled its aluminum-clad E7 QWERTY slider handset. One of the new family of Symbian^3 devices, it has a 4-inch tilting touchscreen display on the front and an 8 megapixel imager capable of 720p video on the back. Yummy. It’s said to be the best business device Nokia, or anyone else, has ever produced and comes with the touted ability to create PowerPoint slides on the go. The E7 also features Nokia’s new ClearBlack Display sorcery and is expected to ship before the end of the year in exchange for €495 (before taxes and subsidies). Update: By now you’ll have noticed that the E7 and N8 are almost identical outside of the E7’s 4-inch display and slightly bigger chassis required to host it. There are a few other differences, though. For example, The 12.9mm-thin N8 has an FM transmitter and 2mm charging connector unlike the slightly thicker 13.6mm E7. The E7’s bigger display also trims back the reported talk time to 540 minutes (the N8 does 720 minutes). Of course, as part of the business focused E-series, the E7 also features a healthy set of preloaded apps including Mail for Exchange (with MS Outlook sync of contacts, calendar, and notes and multiple calendars with meeting request support), IBM Lotus Notes Traveler, Quickoffice dynamic premium, Adobe PDF reader, and F-Secure Anti-theft. The N8 counters with the better camera and stereo mic, thanks to a big 1/1.83-inch 12 megapixel sensor and Xenon flash that require some extra girth on the backend. Oh, and no MicroSD slot on the E7 — you get 16GB and that’s it.

Here’s the deal: you’re pouring out thousands on Flexjet’s fractional aircraft program in order to get where you need to be, when you need to be there. The last thing you’re looking for is another bill to ensure you’re connected while jetting from point A to point Z. Thankfully, the aforesaid company has just inked a deal with Aircell that’ll place Gogo Biz in-flight WiFi into each of its private jets at no additional cost to flyers — a move that’s likely meant to counter NetJets’ recent announcement. Of course, that “annual price bump” will more than likely take care of things come December, but hey — what’s the use in filet mignon on a Challenger 300 when you can’t tweet a picture of your indulgence? Enso shutting down retail sales, finally refunding zenPad ordersWe didn’t want to get sucked into this whole Enso debacle, but our first post on the company and its too good to be true zenPad resulted in a flurry of warnings about unsatisfied customers and never-appearing shipments. After numerous delays we finally got one to try out — and a sad, sorry review unit it was. Now, nearly six months on from that original post, the company is finally, finally processing refunds for those who ordered their zenPads back in March but were left with nary a gadget in sight. With all that behind it, Enso is shifting its efforts exclusively to B2B sales, meaning that you can still buy any of its various and KIRFy wares but the minimum order is 25 units. C’mon now, who wants to be the proud owner of two-dozen zenDroids?

Qualcomm’s CEO confesses: tablets killed the smartbook star

We remember it like it was yesterday — pressed against the edge of our seat, speakerphone on 11, listening to Qualcomm preach about how these so-called “smartbooks” were coming to take over the world. Can’t fault ’em for trying. A little over a year after the (admittedly valiant) effort began, Qualcomm’s CEO is effectively putting this whole nightmare behind him. According to Slashgear, Paul Jacobs admitted during an event this morning that “tablets such as the iPad had already occupied the niche his company expected smartbooks to.” Essentially, the iPad delivered on the concept of an “always-on, all-day device” long before smartbooks ever had a chance at gaining traction, and judging by the fact that only a handful of these guys ever made it to market, we’d say that brutally honest assessment makes a lot of sense. We aren’t necessarily better off for it, mind you, but it definitely seems that the resurgence of the tablet (and the proliferation of the longevous netbook) has extinguished any hope of smartbooks dominating the world. Hey, at least this guy’s man enough to know when a journey’s reached its end. Sayonara, smarties.

Lenovo sees $54.9 million net profit in Q1 earnings, hits double digits in global market share

Look out, world — Lenovo‘s on a serious tear, and it doesn’t look to be stopping anytime soon. In the company’s latest earnings report, it proudly announced its first-ever double digital market share of 10.2 percent. As if that milestone wasn’t enough to make upper management grin, the outfit also nailed down just under $55 million in net income (a pre-tax income of $75 million) on sales of $5.1 billion. This quarter also marks the third in a row that it has been the fastest growing of the top five PC makers, and the fifth consecutive quarter that it outgrew the industry. Specifically, the outfit’s PC shipments increased some 48.1 percent year-over-year, and consolidated sales for its fiscal Q1 saw an insane 49.6 percent uptick from last year. As of now, things are looking mighty rosy for Lenovo, and it just seems logical for the company to revive the Skylight in celebration. Who’s with us?

Intel acquires McAfee for $7.68 billion

Well, we got our copy of McAfee Antivirus for $29, but it looks like Intel had something a little more substantial in mind. The latter has picked up the Santa Clara-based security / antivirus company for a cool $7.68 billion, which works out to $48 per share in cash. Intel informs us that it will function as a wholly owned subsidiary (under the control of its Software and Services group). This comes hot on the heels of the company’s acquisition of TI’s cable modem unit, and possibly signals a new focus on security for connected devices. “The cyber threat landscape has changed dramatically over the past few years, with millions of new threats appearing every month,” said McAfee CEO Dave DeWalt.”We believe this acquisition will result in our ability to deliver a safer, more secure and trusted Internet-enabled device experience.” This has added a wonderful new phrase to the Engadget lexicon (and possibly even a name for our new garage band): Cyber Threat Landscape. Intel acquires TI’s cable modem unit, might be sneaking into your AV rack

Intel’s been trying to break into the home entertainment market for years, and while it’s made some inroads, it’s also looking at a notable list of ho hum attempts that never managed to gain traction. Take the CE3100 processor, for instance — a couple of years ago, the outfit seemed certain that this here chip would be powering every last living room box for the rest of eternity, and nowadays it’s hardly a household name. But this week, Intel has picked up Texas Instruments’ cable modem unit, which gives it a direct link into the very area it’s been trying to exploit. The goal of the acquisition — which is scheduled to close in the fourth quarter of this year — is to combine TI’s Puma product lines with DOCSIS and Intel SoCs. Once that magical marriage takes place, Chipzilla intends to push out complex set-top boxes, residential gateways and modem products, possibly even going for the OEM artery. Details beyond that are few and far betwixt, but we doubt it’ll be too long before the pickup begins to bear fruit.

Adobe’s CEO: ‘we’ve moved on’ from Apple’s argument, and Flash still rules

You can only humor someone for so long, and it seems as if Adobe is at its breaking point with Apple. Just three months after publishing a new ad campaign that sought to ease the tension between the two mega-corps, Adobe’s CEO has been quoted as saying that his company has “moved on” from the whole ordeal. On one hand, we’re glad to see Adobe focusing its resources on optimizing Flash for the myriad Android 2.2 devices that’ll support its mobile player in the months to come, but on the other, it’s a bit depressing to see Shantanu Narayen essentially give up hope that Jobs and Company will ever come to their senses. For example, have a listen at this, with “they” most certainly referring to Apple:

“They’ve chosen to keep their system closed and we’d rather work with partners who are interested in working with us. We believe in open systems. We believe in the power of the internet and in customers making choices and I think a lot of the controversy was about their decision at that point. They’ve made their choice. We’ve made ours and we’ve moved on.”

Something tells us the FTC won’t be so quick to follow suit. Oh, and if you’re wondering how Adobe could just turn the other cheek here, the company’s Anup Murarka just said at the Flash / Android event ongoing in San Francisco that Adobe has “relationships with 19 of the top 20 mobile manufacturers in the world.” One is the loneliest number, or so we hear.

Murdoch plans digital-only paid newspaper for tablets and phones

We can’t honestly say whether The Wall Street Journal‘s laggy iPad rendition was a success at $17.29 per month, but either way Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp is gearing up for another try at this whole digital news thing. The LA Times reports that Murdoch is planning an entirely new national publication for the iPad and other devices — in other words, not just a print-to-digital conversion this time. “Unlike News Corp.’s business-centric Wall Street Journal, the new digital newspaper would target a more general readership, offering short, snappy stories that could be digested quickly,” writes the Times, adding that sources say the digital paper could launch by the end of the year. Here’s hoping it debuts alongside that Skiff Reader, eh?

Sprint’s product development guru bolts from yellow pastures, heads to greener ones

Look out, Sprint — if you aren’t careful, you might just end up pulling a Palm. Shortly after Dan Schulman, Sprint’s prepaid business honcho, announced that he’d be leaving The Now Network for a position at American Express, product development guru Kevin Packingham has announced that he’ll be packing out on Monday. The 39-year old is responsible for spearheading some of Sprint’s most highly sought after products, namely the HTC EVO 4G and Samsung Epic 4G. He’ll be leaving his Senior VP office in order to “run another company in Kansas City,” but Sprint’s remaining mum on what exactly that company will be. For what it’s worth, a spokeswoman for the carrier confessed to the Wall Street Journal that the departures aren’t a concern, and that “Steve Elfman, president of Sprint’s network operations and wholesale business, and Fared Adib, vice president of product development and Mr. Packingham’s lieutenant, will share oversight of product development.”
