mophie’s Juice Pack Air: world’s thinnest iPhone 3G battery / case

mophie’s iPhone 3G Juice Pack received universal praise, and while the additional baggage bothered some, most users just appreciated being able to utilize 3G for more than 47 seconds without needing an AC outlet. Not one to rest on its laurels, the company has today introduced the new and improved version: Juice Pack Air. Contrary to popular belief, this actually isn’t intended for Apple’s MacBook Air (now there’s an idea to capitalize on, mophie), but instead, it’s the planet’s thinnest external iPhone 3G battery / case. The device houses a rechargeable 1,200mAh battery that “virtually doubles the amount of time you have to rock, talk, surf, and send messages.” Eager consumers can pre-order theirs now in black, purple or white, while patient souls can mellow out until they hit mophie’s website and Apple stores everywhere this Spring. Full release is after the jump.

SilverStone Raven’s unique case design highlights cooling, not to mention “ugly”

Those crazy kids over at bit-tech got their hands on SilverStone‘s new Raven RV01 PC case and have been kind enough to give us their impressions. The big news here is that the motherboard’s been rotated 90 degrees clockwise, so that your expansion cards are slotted in vertically (they face up, not out the back). This is intended to facilitate cooling — cool air is taken in at the bottom and exhausted through the top of the machine — but as the reviewer points out, although this “seems the most logical orientation for a high-end PC,” the actual case design is poor enough to rate as fairly frustrating. “For every welcome piece of design,” he writes, “there’s another to annoy.” Cable management is described as nigh on impossible, especially with drive trays and mobo in such close proximity that there isn’t any wiggle room. Judging by all this — and by an appearance that betrays not one wit of “innovation” — you might want to hold off on this bad boy. Someone is sure to take another stab soon, hopefully with a package that is nowhere near as goofy looking. Available now in the UK for £171.35 MSRP and Stateside for $249.99.

Lian-Li’s PC-888: if the Burj Al Arab were a PC chassis

We’re not sure what percentage of each PC-888 sale goes straight to the owners of Dubai‘s Burj Al Arab, but it better be a lot. Lian-Li’s latest eye-popping PC chassis looks pretty much exactly like the aforesaid hotel, and it’s constructed from a significant amount of blue anodized aluminum. As you can probably tell from just looking, you can fit practically anything you’d ever need (as far as PC internals go) in here, with the case measuring in at 11.6- x 29.1- x 18.1-inches. A price has yet to be publicly disclosed, but a quick search brings up figures in the high $400s. Yeah, ouch.

[Thanks, John]

Wooden MacBook case for would-be Amish road warriors

Cut down a tree to save a Mac? Sure, it’s better than using your face. These unpriced (hey, if you gotta ask…) wooden slip cases with leather lining and magnetic enclosures are designed and custom crafted by Rainer Spehl to fit 13-inch MacBooks or 15-inch MacBook Pros. While that’s clearly a last-gen MacBook Pro pictured, we’ll bet that Rainer will build the case to whatever dimensions you’d like just as long as you’ve got the cash to back up that pretty smile. Else, why not roll your own.
