Motorola Ming A1680, MT810, and XT806 begin their Android mercy mission in China

Motorola’s venerable MING handset revisions were just made official in three Android-toting varieties for China Unicom (model A1680 pictured above left), China Mobile (MT810, pictured center), and China Telecom (XT806, on the right). The TD-SCDMA riding MT810 ships with the Android derived OPhone 2.0 operating system and two touchscreen displays: a 3.2-inch stylus-friendly resistive touchscreen and a second transparent capacitive cover that provides a finger-friendly experience when closed. Other specs include 720 x 480 video capture, 720p video playback, and support for China’s CMMB mobile television spec. China Telecom’s XT806 is built on Android 2.1 with GPS, 720p video capture, and support for both CDMA EVDO and GSM for global wanderings. Finally, China Unicom’s A1680 packs a 3.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen, Chinese WAPI WiFi, 5 megapixel camera, GPS, and Motorola’s sixth-generation SoftStylus handwriting system.

Samsung Galaxy Tab, in the wild and now teasing CDMA

Okay, this is getting ridiculous. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab has once again surfaced online via unofficial channels, and this time it’s carrying a sticker on one side that clearly states CDMA. The iAndroid forum goer who allegedly snapped these shots praised the device for its strong speakers, call quality (although not clear if that’s over 3G or WiFi), and ability to run Flash — but at the same time notes the GPS is just a bit slow (it does work, though). More pictures in the gallery below, right next to our ever-increasing impatience to try this little guy out ourselves.

Qualcomm job listing for iPhone dev guru sets internet absolutely aflutter

“The iPhone has no secret for you? Well, that’s what you think… join us and develop the most challenging product of your life!” So reads a now-removed job listing on Qualcomm’s website for an “iPhone Developer Guru” (still cached, thanks to Google). Responsibilities will include “iPhone software design and development but not restricted to it” as well as some Android and… oh, you’ve already jumped to conclusions, have you? The forerunners of CDMA technology asking for iPhone software engineering? Teasing with the most challenging product of your life? We wouldn’t fault for Qualcomm for a bit of boasting, and for all we know this could be much ado about nothing. Then again, we really don’t know anything, and this isn’t exactly some super clue in some giant mystery. Sorry, Encyclopedia Brown; don’t get your hopes up.

Virgin Mobile Offers Unlimited 3G for $40

Virgin Mobile has just upended the entire US mobile internet market. While other carriers continue to limit data and charge per Gigabyte, Virgin has just revealed a new unlimited plan for $40-per-month.

Revealed on Virgin’s Facebook page, the new “Broadband2Go” plans will be condensed down to just two options from the current four: $10 for 100MB (lasts ten days) and $40 for unlimited use for a month. the new tariffs should be available tomorrow, August 24th.

Virgin already has a few unlimited options available on its “Beyond Talk” plans, but these also include voice and SMS and are aimed more at cellphone users. The new unlimited plans are geared towards users of USB 3G dongles and MiFis.

The biggest problem will be the fact that Virgin uses the Sprint network, and therefore CDMA and not GSM. This rules out the iPad, although at these prices you might find it a good idea to pair a Wi-Fi-only iPad with a MiFi.

Still, hold onto this snippet for if and when a Verizon iPad becomes available, whence you shall be able to swap to Virgin if you live in a Sprint coverage area.

Verizon quietly pushes Skype Mobile onto select non-smartphones

Back in February, Verizon Wireless made it quite clear what phones could be used with Skype Mobile, and the whole lot were smartphones. Sometime between then and now, however, it seems as if the carrier (or Skype… or both) has had a change of heart, as today a select few non-smartphones are showing up in its database as being compatible with Skype Mobile. Samsung’s $20-on-contract Reality, LG’s $80-on-contract Chocolate Touch and the enV Touch are all displayed as being in support of Skype Mobile, leading us to believe that an even larger stable of VZW handsets may soon hop onboard. Meanwhile, perfectly capable Android phones like the Nexus One can’t find a decent Skype client to save their life. For shame.

Update: Ah, ha! Now it’s official, with Skype confirming that Skype Mobile is now available on VZW multimedia phones on the BREW platform.

HTC Droid Incredible finally returns to stock, not a moment too soon

If the rumors of an August 18th Android 2.2 update prove true, we’d say Verizon Wireless couldn’t have picked a better time to get HTC’s Droid Incredible back in stock. ‘Course, we suspect you’ll think differently if you’ve been waiting for your backorder to clear over the past few weeks, but we digress. As of this moment in time, the handset — which has been tough to get thanks to AMOLED shortages — is in stock and shipping as early as today, with an unchanged $199.99-on-contract price tag. Better hurry if you’re looking to buy — who knows when those panels will hit yet another production snag.

New iPhone, iPad model codes set up for iTunes activation bypass — CDMA versions, maybe?

So BGR‘s got a tipster lined up with alleged details from within iOS 4 beta firmware that shows a section dedicated to bypassing the usual iTunes activation scheme for three new product codes: iPhone3,2, iPhone 3,3, and iProd 2,1. Actually, these product codes aren’t “new,” per se; we saw all three of them in the iPad’s firmware back in April, but they’ve yet to make the giant leap to officialdom. What’s different here, then? Well, apparently, this activation-bypass scheme has historically had a tendency to show up in Apple’s beta firmware right around the time a new iPhone goes into testing — ostensibly so that field engineers don’t need to worry about that rigmarole to do their jobs — which suggests that these new models are getting ready for action. BGR‘s source says these will be the CDMA iPhone and the next-gen iPad, though you can’t tell that from the product codes alone, and that doesn’t explain why we’ve actually got two new iPhones listed. For what it’s worth, the current iPad — iPad1,1 — used to go by the moniker iProd1,1 in firmware, so it stands to reason that we really are looking at a new tablet here. Now if you’ll excuse us, we’ve got some Verizon Wireless field tech van recon to do.

Sprint’s product development guru bolts from yellow pastures, heads to greener ones

Look out, Sprint — if you aren’t careful, you might just end up pulling a Palm. Shortly after Dan Schulman, Sprint’s prepaid business honcho, announced that he’d be leaving The Now Network for a position at American Express, product development guru Kevin Packingham has announced that he’ll be packing out on Monday. The 39-year old is responsible for spearheading some of Sprint’s most highly sought after products, namely the HTC EVO 4G and Samsung Epic 4G. He’ll be leaving his Senior VP office in order to “run another company in Kansas City,” but Sprint’s remaining mum on what exactly that company will be. For what it’s worth, a spokeswoman for the carrier confessed to the Wall Street Journal that the departures aren’t a concern, and that “Steve Elfman, president of Sprint’s network operations and wholesale business, and Fared Adib, vice president of product development and Mr. Packingham’s lieutenant, will share oversight of product development.”

CDMA iPhone in engineering tests, may arrive in January, says John Gruber

It’s not as cut-and-dry as last night’s declaration that a new Retina Display-equipped iPod Touch is due in the next few weeks, but our man John Gruber just put up a lengthy post on the long-rumored CDMA iPhone for Verizon in which he says the mythical handset is codenamed “N92” and has reached “engineering verification test” (EVT) status. According to Gruber, that’s just one step below “design verification test,” which is what that stolen iPhone 4 prototype was — meaning the CDMA iPhone is apparently just two hops away from production. Mix in persistent rumors of large CDMA chipset orders these past few weeks and a dash of AT&T hinting that exclusivity might be over, and it’s sounding like ol’ N92 could well arrive in January as first reported by Bloomberg — perhaps at Verizon’s CES press conference. In Gruber’s words, “the CDMA iPhone is no longer a cold storage, keep-it-alive-just-in-case-we-need-it project.”

Now, Gruber is very careful to say that none of this is a sure thing, and that Apple’s CDMA work could have nothing to do with Verizon specifically; it could be for Sprint, or for various international CDMA carriers. What’s more, we definitely have our doubts about a CES announcement — we’re expecting to hear a lot about Verizon’s LTE plans at the keynote, and it would certainly be an odd capstone to launch an incredibly high-profile CDMA device at the same time. (Not to mention Apple’s historic aversion to sharing the spotlight with others at CES.) Even still, we’ve definitely been hearing noise about a CDMA Verizon iPhone from all manner of sources for months now — if this is ever going to happen, we’d say this is the last time it’s going to make any sense before both Verizon and AT&T start to get serious about 4G.

Motorola XT806 Android flip phone strikes a pose on Chinese website

You’d think Motorola would be done for the summer after pushing out the much anticipated Droid 2, but no — apparently it has yet more Android handsets to deliver before it could head to the beach. Spotted on a Chinese regulatory website is this XT806 flip phone, which is destined for China Telecom’s CDMA2000 network. Like the other MING handsets, the main selling point here is the Chinese handwriting input on the 3.6-inch 854 x 480 LCD screen — no word on touchscreen type, but we’d be surprised if it isn’t resistive. The phone — powered by a 600MHz TI OMAP3430 chip — also comes with microSD explansion, FM radio, Bluetooth, WLAN of some sort, and a 5 megapixel camera that does 720p video. As for which version of Android, no idea, but we’d still pick the MT810 over this newbie any day.
