MSI X-Slim X340 hands-on

Engadget Chinese managed to score some face time with MSI’s new X-Slim X340 at a pre-CeBIT press event today, and we’re seriously impressed — just like the Atom-based X320, the X340 weighs just 2.8 pounds with a four-cell battery and 1366 x 768 13.4-inch screen, but it’s got more horsepower with a ULV Penryn chip and GMA4500 graphics with HDMI out. Not bad, especially if this thing comes in under $1000 like we’ve heard — we’ll keep an eye out while you check out the rest of the pics in the gallery.

Gigabyte plans CeBIT debut for M1022, M1024 and M1028 netbooks

We already knew that Gigabyte was planning to wow onlookers in Hanover with its touchscreen convertible netbook (that’d be the M1028; pictured), but now we’re finding that it’ll be joined by two others when things get kicked off around a week from now. Reportedly, two other 10-inch netbooks will be showcased to the world at CeBIT: the M1022 and the Atom N270-equipped M1024. It’s said that the latter will simply be a thinner and lighter version of the M1028, while the M1022 will get gifted with Intel’s newer N280 processor. Beyond that, details are few and far between, but hopefully we’ll get all up in their system profiles in a few days.

MSI unveils new X-Slim models ahead of CeBIT

We certainly aren’t tired of the X-Slim 320 laptop from MSI, with its Air-like form-factor in less expensive and slightly more practical packaging — it’s still many moons away from release, after all. Despite that, MSI felt the need to announce two new models to round out the still unreleased lineup: the 13.4-inch X340 and 15.6-inch X600. We don’t know much about these two yet except that the X340 is slated be priced somewhere in the (wide) range of $699-$999 in the US, that both offer HDMI in addition to VGA output, both are Centrino 2-based, and that the X600 even has an eSATA port on top of its two USBs. We’ll surely be seeing a lot more of this pair (plus the X320 as well) at CeBIT in just a few weeks, and are hoping that MSI will go ahead and maybe release one before introducing any more.

iPoint 3D brings gesture-based inputs to 3D displays

Just in case you’ve been parked out under a local stone for the past six months and change, we figured it prudent to let you know that the 3D bandwagon has totally regained momentum. So much momentum, in fact, that the brilliant minds over at Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft have decided to bust out a 3D innovation that actually makes us eager to sink our minds into the elusive third dimension. The iPoint 3D, which we’re hoping to get up close and personal with at CeBIT next week, is a technology that enables Earthlings to interact with a 3D display via simple gestures — all without touching the panel and without those style-smashing 3D glasses. The gurus even go so far as to compare their creation to something you’d see in a science fiction flick, with the heart of it involving a recognition device (usually suspended above the user) and a pair of inbuilt cameras. There’s no mention of just how crazy expensive this would be if it were ready for the commercial realm, but we’ll try to snag an estimated MSRP for ya next week.

Gigabyte shows off 10-inch M1028 convertible netbook

If you thought Gigabyte’s M912 mini convertible tablet was hot stuff, get a load of this. Expected to be officially unveiled at CeBIT, the company just couldn’t resist bringing along a M1028 demo unit to MWC in order to mix things up. Reportedly, the swivel-screen netbook was equipped with a comparatively roomy 10-inch display (1,024 x 600), and packed within was a standard issue Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Bluetooth, WiFi, Ethernet, optional WWAN module, an SD card slot, ExpressCard, VGA output, a trio of USB ports, a 1.3 megapixel webcam and Windows XP Home. We ought to hear (and see) more when we land at CeBIT in just under a fortnight, but for now, you can see a Gigabyte-approved “sneak peek” vid just after the break.
