Cheap Geek: Magellan GPS, iPhone charger, Sega Tennis

magellanRoadMate1200.jpg

1. Save a bundle on a refurbished GPS and you’ll have a buck or two left over for gas. Tiger Direct has refurbished Magellan Roadmate 1200 navigators for only $59.99. The Roadmate is a great line with an easy interface and attractive maps. This model has a 3.5-inch screen, a 1.3 million points-of-interest database, and a QuickSpell feature that makes entering addresses much faster.

2. Keep your iPhone or iPod charged for less. Apple accessories cost way too much, which is why you should consider this Cables Unlimited AC adapter if you need a spare. Use it for an iPhone, iPod, or anything else that can charge through a USB port.

3. It’s Friday and sitting on the couch all weekend playing video games is starting to sound real good. Grab a copy of Sega Superstars Tennis for the Xbox 360 from Amazon for only $10.83.

Is the iPhone hotter than we think?

Is the iPhone hotter than we think?

It’s hard to call two incidents of some occurrence around the world a trend, but, when those incidents both involve an electrical device catching fire spontaneously, it creates a situation that’s hard to ignore — especially when that device is the iPhone. On Saturday, Italian blogger Tim Colbourne was charging his 3G handset and, after three hours, it sparked and caught fire at the base. Tim did a little investigation and found a case of a Swedish handset doing the same thing back in 2008, making us a little concerned that there could be more melted chargers out there. Apple replaced that earlier phone after something of a fight, and while we’re hoping they’ll be a little friendlier here, we’re also hoping this gives Cupertino another bit of incentive to go ahead and switch over to micro-USB already. All the cool kids are doing it, and you don’t see their cables catching fire — usually.

Video: Intels Wireless Power Concept

intelwirelesspower.jpg

We’d all love to go entirely wireless, right? One thing tends to stand in our way, however–from time to time, we need to plug our gadgets in to recharge their batteries. There’s been a lot of talk about the inductive charging in devices like the Powermat, sure, but a new concept from Intel takes things a step further: wireless charging at distances up to three feet.

Intel was showing off the technology at an event today in midtown Manhattan. According to the Intel rep, the demo was actually meant to charge up a PC, but, unfortunately, thanks to some shipping problems, we had to settle for a lightbulb. The display is based on concepts developed by MIT physicists. It uses magnetic wave with an efficiency rate of around 80-percent.

According to the rep, in the future scenario, the large coil would live in the wall of, say, your home, and the other would sit inside the device that needs charging. The technology is said to be harmless (he demonstrated this by waving his hands between the two coils), but apparently Intel is researching it further, you know, just in case.

Check out a video of the coils in action, after the jump.

KFE’s new phone charger powered by zinc-air batteries, science

Those AA alkaline- and lithium-powered phone chargers are a totally handy (and relatively inexpensive) thing to throw into a bag and carry around in the event — the incredibly likely event — that you end up running your set dry at one time or another, but there’s a small problem: those AAs don’t go very far. Generally speaking, you’ll get a couple charges out of a set of batteries, which makes them environmentally dubious at best and less convenient than you’d like them to be. That’s where KFE Japan’s new solution comes in: same concept, but the batteries are zinc-air instead of alkaline or lithium — the same tried and true chemistry used by hearing aid batteries — whereby you pop a lid open on the charger to expose the batteries to air, which starts the juice flowing. The advantage is that you’re looking at about 20 charges before the thing’s depleted, and when you’re there, you’ll be able to send it back into KFE to be recharged. The chargers will run 3,000 yen (about $31) when they launch in March. [Warning: subscription required]

Wall charger takes one AC outlet, provides juice for five USB devices

We’ve seen some nifty chargers in our day, but this bugger is probably one of the most practical to ever hit the market place. Rather than sending along 800 various tips to keep track of lose while traveling, this wall charger converts a single AC outlet into power for five USB devices (4 USB A female and 1 mini-USB). These days, it’s rare to find a device that can’t optionally be charged via USB, and if it can’t, let’s face it — it’s about time you threw that thing to the local thrift store. Grab one now for just $25.99.

EU commissioner pushing for standard connector for all cellphones

While some companies like Connectland have already offered up their own solution to the problem of multiple cellphone connectors (seen at right), a European Union commissioner now seems to be taking the idea one step further, and is starting to push the notion of one standard cellphone connector to rule them all. According to Telcompaper, European Commissioner for Industry Günter Verheugen recently said in a German interview that he has had his patience tested after giving the cellphone industry several chances to develop a single cellphone connector, and he’s now not excluding “severe measures” to force them to reach a solution. His main concern, as you might have guessed, is the waste that results from folks needing a new charger for each new cellphone, although the cellphone industry obviously sees things a bit differently, with the EICTA’s Tony Graziano saying that Verheugen’s demand is “legally and technically impossible” due to differences in voltage and battery requirements within the European Union. In any event, it seems that some actual regulations are still quite a ways off from becoming a reality, and Verheugen still insists that he’d prefer to see the industry arrive at a standard voluntarily.

Wrist Band Portable Battery charges your phone, electrifies your look

There are plenty of terrible portable chargers out there, but the “Wrist Band Portable Battery” sure isn’t one of them. The name pretty much tells the whole tale — it’s a wrist band packed with a lithium-ion battery (that supposedly gets about five hours of juicing time) for charging numberless portable devices. It comes with 7 different adapters, and the totally awesomely-styled band itself has a set of LEDs which indicate the battery life remaining. It’ll cost you about $25 to get one of your own and prove once and for all that no, punk is not dead. Check out a few more pics after the break.
