Leaked Intel roadmap reveals six new notebook CPUs for 2010, better battery life in 2011

We love the smell of silicon in the morning — especially when it emanates from one of Intel’s legendary leaked roadmaps. Today, we’ve stumbled across one with specs for Chipzilla’s entire fall collection of mobile chips, and a couple new details about that desiccated overpass the execs keep talking about. First up, it appears sources were spot-on about the Core i7s and Core i5s we heard about last week, but the 2.66GHz / 3.33 GHz Core i5-580M won’t be the only dual-core CPU to look for in Q4; it will be sandwiched between the 2.8GHz Core i7-640M (which turbos to 3.46GHz) and the 2.66GHz / 3.2GHz Core i5-560M — all of which peak at a conservative 35 watts.

True juice sippers will want a 15W CULV, however, and it seems more of those exist than Intel initially let on; Q4 will see a high-end Core i7-680UM that starts at 1.46GHz and turbos up to 2.53GHz and a 1.33GHz / 2.13GHz Core i5-560UM, plus a 25W 2.26GHz Core i7-660LM low-voltage chip will also join the fray. All these new dual-cores will have on-die Intel HD Graphics in one form or another, but all are also stopgaps until Intel’s 32nm “Huron River” platform debuts in the first quarter of 2011. Then, we’ll get WiMAX, WiDi and Intel Bluetooth alongside an intriguing new concept dubbed Zero Power ODD, which promises a power-saving sleep mode for our noisy optical disc drives (see more coverage link) and the promise of enough battery life to play two full Blu-rays on a single charge. Don’t believe us? See the slides below for more.

MSI follows fate’s whispers, intros 24-inch Wind Top AE2420 3D

Typical, right? As the 3D craze flows from the cinema to the television and onto the PC, it was just a matter of time before one of MSI’s Wind Top all-in-ones shipped with support for the third dimension. By most accounts, the new Wind Top AE2420 3D looks like a mildly larger version of the AE2220 we peeked late last year, touting a 24-inch 1080p multitouch panel, support for shutter glasses (a single pair is included), Core i5 or i7 CPU options and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD5730 pushing the pixels. There’s also a pair of 5-watt speakers built-in, not to mention an Ethernet jack, VGA output and a handful of USB 2.0 sockets. Mum’s the word on pricing, but MSI is expected to have this bad boy on display as Computex kicks off early next week. Yeah, you know we’ll be there pretending to be embarrassed while donning the spectacles.

Intel Core i7-875K and Core i5-655K unlock multipliers, better performance

Intel’s back in its familiar saddle today with the unveiling of a pair of new CPUs, marking the start of a new K-series that will cater to the overclocker inside all of us. The Core i7-875K is a 2.93GHz quad-core unit, which can scale heights of 3.6GHz via Turbo Boost, or even higher if you have the patience, tenacity and appropriate cooling to make it happen. Review action for this chip shows it to be Intel’s premier offering short of the enthusiastically overpriced and overpowered Core i7-980X. Even more affordable will be the Clarkdale-based Core i5-655K, which trots along at 3.2GHz (with a 3.46GHz gallop option), but response to it was a little more muted. It’s a dual-core CPU, after all, and if you don’t plan on exploiting that unlocked multiplier to achieve some madness above 4GHz, you might be better off looking elsewhere. In amidst all the mad benchmarking, we’ve also found a review of a Falcon Northwest i7-875K rig as well, so give it all a read if you’re mulling over a desktop upgrade.

Lenovo’s Core i3 / i5-based IdeaPad Z560 now available to order

We’d heard it was coming in June, and it looks like Lenovo’s new Core i3 / i5-based IdeaPad Z560 is now already available to order directly from the company, with a promised ship date “within 13 days” (i.e. sometime in June, unless Lenovo really starts to move these out). Starting at just $739, the laptop packs a 15.6-inch 1366 x 768 LED-backlit display, along with your choice of integrated Intel HD or discrete NVIDIA GeForce 310M graphics, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 320GB or 500GB hard drives, a DVD burner, a six-cell battery and, of course, your choice of Intel’s latest and greatest ULV processors. Still undecided? Then perhaps our recent hands-on will help sway you one way or the other.

Intel officially outs Core i3, i5 and i7 ULV processors for those ultra-thin laptops

We can’t say this one is much of a surprise, but it sure is good to get the official details on Intel’s latest ultra-low voltage Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. Just as we had heard, the new dual-core CPUs will be landing this June, and though they won’t be replacing the current Celeron and Pentium ULVs on the market, they’ll certainly provide a more powerful option for the “ultra-thin” category. All the new 32-nanometer Nehalam chips are said to provide 32 percent better performance than previous ULVs, but a 20 percent power reduction than standard-voltage Core 2010 CPUs. And just like those regular Core 2010 processors, these get the same Turbo Boost and Hyper-threading performance advantages. All the processors have TDPs of 17 watts which is what is enabling the 50 percent improvement in thermal performance. That’s all the technical details Intel shared this morning, but it shouldn’t be long before we up and testing the performance and battery life of these new chips in slim laptops from MSI, Lenovo and Acer. Until then, there’s the full press release after the break.

Intel Core i5-580M speeding toward a fall release at 2.66GHz?

The Core i5-540M is still quite rare on the ground, but we’re hearing word that Intel is already prepping the assembly line for its successor. A new Core i5-580M has been dug up by the sleuths at Notebook Italia, who say it’ll run at a default 2.66GHz and ramp up to 3.33GHz via Turbo Boost when needed. Those numbers compare favorably to the 2.53GHz and 3.06GHz of the 540M, and if Intel and company get their timing right, the 580M should be stealing some of that Core i7 thunder just in time for the back to school shopping rush. Won’t hear any complaining from us if that turns out to be the case.

Alienware M11x getting Intel Core i3 / i5 / i7 upgrade next month, says Dell rep

Meet Pearce Clune, Dell’s Head of Consumer Operations for Middle East, Africa, and Turkey. Clune’s gone ahead and given a pretty brief demonstration of Alienware‘s laptop lineup to Shuffle Magazine, include the mighty impressive M11x powerhouse in netbook clothing. It’s all pretty standard fare until about 2:20 into the video, where the fine gentleman casually drops that the Core 2 Duo processor is about to get a modern upgrade with Core i3, i5, and i7 options. That’s right, a Core i7 processor in a 11-inch form factor. We’ll let that sink in for a second. But don’t just take our word for it — video after the break. Now, is Optimus en route, too?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

HP slips out 14-inch G42t laptop with Core i3 and i5 options

HP’s been pushing out laptops like it’s going out of style, but for some reason or another, the G42t never seemed to make it into any of the outfit’s recent press releases. No matter, as the aforesaid machine has just surfaced on the company’s website, and it’s not only for sale, it’s available for customization. Users can equip the 14-inch laptop with a Core i3 or i5 processor, up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, a hard drive ranging from 250GB to 640GB, integrated Intel graphics, a 1,366 x 768 resolution panel and a built-in webcam. There’s also WiFi, optional Bluetooth, a SuperMulti DVD burner (or a Blu-ray drive, if you’d prefer), 6-cell Li-ion battery and plenty of bloatware to keep you busy right out of the box. Best of all, this guy gets going at just $549.99, so there’s at least a slim chance you won’t shatter the bank while indulging yourself.

[Thanks, Jorgos]

MSI brings Core i5, GeForce 310M to 15.6-inch CX623 multimedia laptop

Nah, it’s no Core i5 ULV-powered X series, but MSI’s latest does use a Core i5 processor and does have an X in the model name. Mind-blowing, right? The outfit’s latest 15.6-incher is a multimedia powerhouse, humming along with a 1GB NVIDIA GeForce 310M GPU, twin DDR3 RAM slots (plenty of space for 4GB), a 1,366 x 768 resolution display, six-cell battery, 1.3 megapixel webcam and a pair of stereo speakers. There’s also a 320GB or 500GB SATA hard drive, 4-in-1 card reader, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI / VGA outputs, twin USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA socket, audio in / out, Ethernet and a “film print coating” over the palm rest area to minimize wear. Mum’s the word on a price and release date, but we suspect we’ll know a bit more on both of those points when we touch down at Computex in a fortnight.
