Ben Heck splits and condenses a pair of Xbox 360 controllers for the disabled

Ben Heck

That crafty Ben Heck is always up to something, like whipping up an Xbox 360 disk changer for the laziest of gamers. But, on the latest episode of his hacking and modding show, Mr. Heck is back to helping those in need and crafting accessible controllers for the disabled. During the 15-minute hackathon, the modder extraordinaire creates two different Xbox 360 remotes — a split model for those with limited arm motion, and a one-handed version for people with use of only one set of digits. If you’ve got a smidgen of soldering experience (and ideally access to a CNC) these projects are probably even simple enough to tackle yourself. Check out the entire episode and full PR after the break.

SparkFun launches ProtoSnap, pre-wired Arduino kits for beginners (video)

ProtoSnap Line

Looking to get your start in the world of Arduino programming, but having trouble with that whole circuit prototyping thing? Well, the crafty guys and gals at SparkFun have whipped up something they call ProtoSnap — pre-wired boards with an Atmel AVR processor and a small pile of components that are ready for experimenting. When you’ve got your code down, the parts easily snap apart for use in a properly soldered, permanent project. There are three different kits available in the online store now, the Pro Mini ($45), the LilyPad Development Board ($60), and the LilyPad E-sewing kit ($20), the latter being an accessory pack for the LilyPad Board. Check out the gallery of goodies below, as well as the video and PR after the break.

Autodesk adds DIY site Instructables to its stable

InstructablesAutodesk has really decided to embrace the DIY community recently. First the company launched 123D, a free design tool for hobbyists, now it’s snatched up Instructables, an online repository for everything from quadrocopter plans to bruschetta recipes. There’s no need for amateur inventors out there to worry about the acquisition, though — it doesn’t sound like much will be changing at the site. Makers will still own the copyright to their creations and the brand will be keeping its focus on user submitted projects, but the site’s blog does promise that improvements are on the way thanks to the deeper pockets of its new owner. Most of the finer details of the purchase are still unclear, but there’s some more info in the PR after the break.

Maker Faire pony has Wiimote-controlled indigestion, belches fire (video)

There’s a good reason why My Little Pony wasn’t marketed to boys. Shown off at the 2011 Maker Faire in Detroit, this animatronic, fire-breathing horsie got to spread a little heat thanks to the Louisville, KY-based modding duo, LVL1. The partially Wiimote-controlled mechanical filly is the result of the duo’s Hackerspace efforts, and plans are already underway to loose this steed into the great, fully wireless open. Also on deck for the hot-mouthed stallion: a flame-spewing cabbage patch doll riding companion. How’s that for a DIY-perversion of your precious 80s youth? Peep the full pyromania-tinged project after the break.

This Mass Effect 3 N7 Rifle replica is amazing and detailed

Mass Effect 3 isn’t here yet, but many fans are already getting in the mood for the final chapter in the series with costumes and now, replicas of the weapons that will appear in the game. This N7 rifle was actually commissioned by Bioware to be showcased at ComicCon, and surprisingly the whole thing only […]

LED coffee table busts a multicolored move (video)

LED coffee table busts a multicolored move (video)

It might look like something out of MJ’s Billie Jean, but this colorful LED array won’t be under moonwalking foot — that is, unless the party gets crunk. This colorful grid is actually a table top, brought to you by way of TI’s MSP430 microcontroller, and it knows how to get down. The table is made up of 128 frosted glass cubes, each apparently capable of emitting 16 million colors. Its creators also produced a special beat-detection software, that could very easily have your furniture outshining the bumpers and grinders at your next party. If you’re looking for a little extra something from your coffee table, you can find full build instructions at the source link below.

iPhone 4 gets upgraded for NFC payments the hard way

Softbank customers in Japan can simply get an NFC sticker to add some contact-less payments to their iPhone 4, but most folks don’t have it quite so easy just yet. There are some alternatives while you wait for Apple to hop on the NFC bandwagon, however, like this solution from Unplggd‘s Vivian Kim. It uses one of the smaller NFC-equipped credit cards now available from some banks, which is apparently just small enough to fit under the back cover of an iPhone 4 (a clear one, in this case, to show off your cleverness). And, yes, it apparently still works just fine under there — even if you add a case on top of it.

XBee grows up, delivers WiFi to DIYers and Arduino enthusiasts

XBee WiFi

Good news DIYers, XBee now comes in WiFi flavors. The favorite wireless module of Arduino tinkerers everywhere is growing up and adding 802.11n to its normal compliment of RF and ZigBee options. Development kits are available now starting at $149 per board, with add-on modules like embedded or wire antennas and RF connectors clocking in at $49. It might not seem like a big deal to some of you out there, but anyone who’s contemplated building a Tweet-a-Watt or a Yarn Monster will appreciate being able skip adding a ZigBee adapter to their PC. Check out the PR after the break.

CircuitBee lets you share schematics, like Scribd for soldering aficionados

CircuitBee

Instructables is great, don’t get us wrong, but if you’re just looking for a sweet new Arduino project or a super-charged Atari Punk Console, wading through the piles of Lego swords and wreath-making tips can be frustrating. Enter CircuitBee, a document sharing site dedicated to one thing, and one thing only — schematics. It’s kind of like Scribd but, instead of being loaded with court documents and shoddy how-to books, it features user-uploaded circuit diagrams to get you started on your next soldering and etching project. The selection at the site is rather sparse at the moment, but since it’s only in alpha we’ll cut it some slack. Check out the site at the source link, and don’t be surprised if a few submissions from your favorite Engadget writers start popping up.

Mass Effect 3 N7 replica gets real world debut for your Spacer pleasure

If you’re the type to stock your walls with Lord of the Rings-style elvish daggers (or, you know, build full-scale Portal gun replicas), then you’ll love this official Mass Effect 3 mockup commissioned by the folks at Bioware. Arduously crafted by self-proclaimed graphic design dork Harrison Krix, the N7 assault rifle replica made its facsimile debut at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. With only a fortnight to work with, the DIY, prop-making hobbyist took the made-for-cosplay gun from a glued wood, styrene and PVC-detailed master concept to paint weathered, final collector’s edition mold. It’s an impressive feat you can view in heavily photographed detail at the source, but there’s still one thing we’re waiting on Krix to bring to life — that space-skipping SSV Normandy.
