How would you change HP’s Firebird gaming rigs?

After arguably the biggest hype-fest of late 2008, HP’s Firebird with VoodooDNA was revealed as Rahul Sood’s ambitious little secret. The miniaturized gaming rigs began shipping out during CES, and we’ve no doubt that a few of you with space constraints and a lust of high frame rates have already chomped on the bullet. So, does the machine live up to the hype? Is it worth the asking price? What features weren’t included that should have been? Has it handled your gaming demands with ease? Feel free to sound off below — who knows, maybe Mr. Sood will tune in and hear you out.

Windows 7 Beta in-depth impressions

We’ve covered a few tidbits of what the Windows 7 Beta has to offer, including the mess of machines we’ve installed it on, but we finally gathered together all our thoughts and impressions of the OS into one meaty pile of words and screencaps. Naturally, we’re working with a beta here, so things can absolutely get better (or worse), and Redmond might be hiding a feature or two in the wings — or for the inevitable SP1 — but we’d say Microsoft has really put its best foot forward here. Check out all our ramblings after the break.

3D is back, but is it better than ever?

No face-consuming goggles were necessary to see that 3D was all the rage at this year’s CES, but for those even remotely knowledgeable about the tech, you’d realize that 2009 is far from the being the first year in which the third dimension was hot stuff. Join us over at Engadget HD for a look at the past, present and potential future of 3D in the cinema, the home and your life. Seriously, it gets personal.

Ask Engadget: Best outdoor GPS device?

We’ve had discussions surrounding those petite navigators that stay safely within the confines of your vehicle, but it’s about time we broke it back out for the argonauts in attendance. We’ll let Tyler take it from here:

“I’m an avid hiker, and I’m looking to get a new outdoor-centric navigator that can withstand the elements and last a good while without a charge. I’m particularly interested in getting one with extra features like a trip logger and multimedia player, but obviously I’m trying to spend the least amount while not sacrificing usability. Any other outdoorsy individuals have any advice?”

Once you’re back in from the tent, why not give this some thought and chime in? After that, feel free to send in a question of your own at ask at engadget dawt com.

SteelSeries World of Warcraft Mouse equipped for hands-on impressions, +14 agility

We finally got our hands on SteelSeries’ World of Warcraft MMO Gaming Mouse, and took the thing for a little spin across Azeroth. After hiring a rogue to open the complicated packaging and marveling at the mouse’s incomprehensible runes, we hooked up the mouse over USB and were treated to the ambient light show. The “cracks” across the back of the mouse glow with subtle colors, though we wish they could light up a bit more dramatically and actually convey game status info — but we’re boring like that. Compared to most mice, the WoW mouse is rather large and “hand supporting,” leaving behind the typical friction and frame of reference that a trailing hand and wrist usually supply. It’s nice and comfortable, but there’s a bit of a trade off, though overall we found the mouse to be incredibly “right” in responsiveness and accuracy. More impressions after the break.

Totally blow out the big game! Part IV: Super Bowl XLIII

Considering that Pittsburgh already nabbed “one for the thumb,” it’s safe to say they’re just going for history now. The Steelers and Cardinals didn’t meet during the regular season this year (a shame, we know), but you can bet both clubs are ready for what’s coming when February 1st rolls around. In fact, the only question remaining is this: are you? If you’ve suddenly found yourself shocked and unprepared, follow us past the break for our guidance on blowing out Super Bowl XLIII.

Kodak’s Theatre HD Player with gyro-based Pointer Remote unboxed and reviewed

We’ve been playing around with Kodak’s new Theatre HD Player for the past few days, and our feelings are mixed. Kodak is doing a lot of interesting and innovative things here, especially with the gyroscopic Pointer Remote it has included for interfacing with the box, but we’re not convinced this thing is polished or helpful enough to justify the $299 asking price. Check out our full impressions after the break.

Sony doth protest too much: don’t call the VAIO P a netbook?

Our main man “Rick” over at the Sony Blog has penned another short-form stunner entitled “You Can’t Tell a Netbook by its Cover,” which aims to dispel the seemingly persistent myth that the VAIO P is… gasp, a netbook. We’d thought we’d break down the points (which Sony has helpfully broken down) and see if they hold water. Since the Sony Blog moves through these killers one-by-one, we’re going to do the same — read on for the hard facts.

Windows 7 install roundup

After resting up and settling into our post-CES golden desk chairs, team Engadget got busy at installing Windows 7 on pretty much anything they could find. Most installs went off without a hitch, and BSoDs were fairly few and far between. You can check out all our various first impressions after the break… the names aren’t made up, but the stories are true.

Engadget’s Netflix HD streaming shootout

Netflix seems to be doing things right when it comes to the streaming game, partnering with several hardware companies in an attempt to make its service more or less ubiquitous — a pretty sharp break from the proprietary hardware approach taken by most of its competitors. That means Netflix subscribers have quite a few choices when it comes to streaming, and we thought we’d put the ones available now head-to-head and try to crown a winner. The good news? There isn’t a mediocre choice out there. The bad? Well, read on.

Update: We shot another video to answer some lingering questions about the Roku player, check it below.
