How would you change Cowon’s S9 Curve?

Cowon’s S9 portable media player had a lot of folks excited — and understandably so. A bright, expansive AMOLED display. A sleek, curvaceous design. And a codec support list worth drooling over. During our time with the unit, we found the user interface to still be lacking in a few critical departments, though we certainly found a long list of reasons to love it, too. Now that it’s been floating around on US soil for a hot minute, we’re asking you how you’d tweak it. Are you completely satisfied with the UI? Are there any video formats that have inexplicably refused to play? Is the build quality up to your lofty standards? Let it rip below!

Ask Engadget: Best BlackBerry handset right now?

Make no mistake, the hottest thing going in the mobile realm just now is the Palm Pre, but that’s not to say RIM hasn’t gained a lot of attention with its most recent outpouring of smartphones. Max has chimed in with this week’s Ask Engadget question (which was sent in via ask at engadget dawt com), and it’s all about the latest and greatest BlackBerrys.

“I’m considering purchasing the BlackBerry Bold, but the news about the Storm and even the Curve has me intrigued. Which would your readers recommend for a new BlackBerry owner, and why? Pros and cons for each would be excellent.”

We don’t need to reiterate just how high the pedestal is on which the Curve 8900 sits (yes, even today) in the minds of the BB faithful, so we’ve no doubt that it should be included in this conversation. Go on fanboys, defend your dialer below.

What Apple could learn from Palm’s webOS

In case you missed the keynote, Palm took some special moments to let everyone know that they’re not trying to compete with Apple — which is of course exactly what they’re doing with the Pre and webOS. Sure, there’s plenty of room in the market for multiple operating systems and manufacturers, as both companies have pointed out, but we can’t help but think that Palm took a long hard look at where Apple was at with its ultra-successful mobile OS and what they could improve upon, and we would like to assume that Apple is looking very carefully at webOS right now (and hopefully the Pre’s physical keyboard, but we’re dreamers) and comparing it with its current iPhone OS. So, if you’ll indulge us, let’s look at a few of the iPhone’s existing shortcomings that Apple might try and shore up — or perhaps already has fixes in the works for — now that there’s some very serious competition on the scene. Plus, with Steve on the sidelines, we can imagine there’s some extra pressure on the company to prove that innovation at Apple is not just about one man.

These are by no means the only two phones that matter right now, but there are enough parallels and common ancestry (a certain John Rubinstein) to make this a natural first round of comparison. All the magic happens after the break.

Palm Pre: everything you ever wanted to know

When Palm launched its Pre last week at CES, we were both blown away and pretty overwhelmed. Besides issuing new hardware, the company also demoed a completely original operating system called webOS which incorporates some pretty heady ideas about what a mobile phone can do. Now that we’ve had a little time to step back, we’re taking a more methodic look at the device and its software, and hoping to answer some of those nagging questions you’ve been asking. Read on for a look at everything we know about the phone right now.

More details on D-Link’s upcoming 7-inch SideStage USB monitor

More details on D-Link's upcoming 7-inch SideStage USB monitor

We swung by D-Link’s booth at CES to check out its upcoming SideStage USB-powered monitor, hoping to see the thing in action and get some more details ahead of its release. What we found was quite familiar looking, to say the least. D-Link was disappointingly just demoing a Nanovision, but was quick to point out this would not be the product destined for a full US release sometime this summer. That new display will still be produced by Nanovision, but will be modified to better suit our market, graced with a different logo, and cheaper, too. No firm price yet, but the company is targeting sub-$100, which sounds good to us.

Palm’s Mojo SDK for webOS in pictures

Okay, look, we like the Pre. We like it a lot, actually — but failing our ability to get hold of one of those any time soon, we’ll gladly take a boatload of screenshots in its place. These shots, taken from a late-2008 copy of the Mojo SDK, show some core goodies like messaging and Synergy contact management — there’s still a lot of stuff missing, yes, but this version has been floating around for a few months now, so the build demonstrated on Pres at CES was likely a good deal fresher. Head over to Engadget Mobile for the full gallery!

Big thanks to Boy Genius for hooking us up with shots from his tipster!

Ask Engadget: What’s the best netbook out there (redux)?

It’s been just under half a year since we originally asked about the best netbook out there, and a lot has changed in the meanwhile. Thanks to some incessant begging from reader Chad (we kid, we kid), we’re putting this out once more for an updated look at your best option for a minuscule lappie.

“Hey guys. How about we pose the topic of best netbook once more since so many new models have arrived since the original? Much appreciated!”

So, what netbooks have impressed you over the back end of ’08? Are you still insistent that the first-generation Eee is the one to buy? Are closeout models a better option? Spill it all in comments below, then send us a question of your own at ask at engadget dawt com.
