Verizon waives Xoom and Galaxy Tab activation fees on contracts from March 1st in a limited time offer

In an unforeseen act of generosity, Verizon has decided to scrap the $35 activation fee it charges with purchases of the 3G-equipped Motorola Xoom and Galaxy Tab tablets, leaving customers’ wallets a little heavier and hearts a little lighter. This change will be effective on month-to-month contracts starting from the first of this month or later — meaning a nice little refund for anyone acquiring an Android tablet through Big Red after March 1st — however we’re also hearing it’ll be a limited time offer. The intel has been communicated via email to Mobile Burn, and Droid-Life has also obtained a document saying as much, while we’re in the process of confirming it ourselves. All the same, it looks safe to get the (modest) celebrations going.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 showcased on video, doesn’t look all that inadequate to us

We have no small amount of respect for Samsung for coming out and admitting that its Galaxy Tab 10.1 slate won’t necessarily be the best thing since sliced Apples, but we wouldn’t go so far as to describe it as “inadequate,” which is what company VP Lee Don-Joo recently called it. It’s a handsome, svelte and undeniably powerful device, a set of qualities that is in full show during AndroidHD‘s 11-minute long video of a day spent in the company of a Tab 10.1. Now, this isn’t a hands-on video so much as a commercial made by someone other than Samsung. You can tell Sammy didn’t author it because nobody tries to fit this Galaxy Tab inside a pocket. Samsung Galaxy Tab’s WiFi-only version rumored to cost $399, arrive on April 4th

Shocking as it might be, we still haven’t had a Galaxy Tab from Samsung that rocks nothing but the WiFis, though that seems about to finally change. The 3G-deprived 7-inch Tab, promised for Q1 2011, has slipped on its schedule a little and looks set to now hit retail in the first week of April, at the admittedly appealing price of $399. Now, we all know the tablet market of April 2011 is shaping up to be extremely rich on machines with high specs, large screens and inflated opinions of themselves, but there could still be a fine little niche for an affordable, well built slate, even if it does only run on Froyo.

Samsung Galaxy Tab goes WiBro, yo

Making fun of WiBro — the Korean moniker for what’s otherwise known as IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX — never gets old. Fortunately, Samsung just gave us another reason to “pose hard” with the announcement of the WiBro- and T-DMB-equipped Galaxy Tab now available from the Korean operator KT for 900,000KRW or just a bit more than $800. Otherwise, it’s pretty much the same 7-inch Android tablet that’s about to get an 8.9 inch big brother on March 22nd. Hey Sprint, you seeing this?

Samsung’s latest 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab teaser hints impressive slimness

Samsung hasn’t been entirely shy about its forthcoming 8.9-inch tablet, though Mr. Blurrycam seems to be having some trouble getting on a plane in Seoul. Fortunately for us, today the Korean giant decided to give us mere mortals a sneak peek at said device, and it sure looks promising — as you can see above, the bulge seems to imply that the tablet’s general thickness almost matches the headphone jack’s height. If true, this would put Samsung’s 8.9-incher head to head with Apple’s 8.8mm thick iPad 2 in a fitness contest. Bring on March 22nd!

Samsung says Galaxy Tab 10.1 is still on schedule, iPad 2 be darned

Samsung may have been humbled by Apple’s iPad 2, but the company’s apparently not letting that affect its plans — without directly refuting statements by a Samsung VP that the upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1 was “inadequate” or might be priced cheaper than originally intended, the company told the Yonhap News Agency that the tablet will be released on schedule. In other words, the Honeycomb tablet’s not getting any thinner or lighter, but something’s gotta give, and Samsung’s not quite ready to say just what that is.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 steps out with an FCC certification

Not much to look at, is it? Still, though, if you squint and use the most overactive parts of your imagination, you can kinda see how this is the Honeycomb-powered Galaxy Tab 10.1 that Samsung is starting to launch in some markets this month. Sure enough, the FCC has granted certification to model number P7100 (the original Galaxy Tab is P7000, by the bye), and the early stamp of approval by the feds plus the support for 850 / 1900MHz 3G gives us hope that there’s a plan for an American launch in the near term — likely on AT&T, we suppose, since this radio setup wouldn’t be appropriate for any other of the US nationals. In the meantime, though, we encourage you to stare into this large, white, rectangular space and tell us your deepest thoughts.

Hey, remember all the fun last month when Samsung’s Lee Young-hee said that Galaxy Tab sales were “quite smooth” but everyone heard “quite small?” Yeah, well, Steve Jobs doesn’t. Before unveiling the iPad 2 today the man in black and denim listed that early misquote — which was widely and officially corrected — as evidence to prove that the iPad‘s competition was floundering. Admittedly that isn’t far from the truth, but there’s no need to go putting words in other executives’ mouths to make a point.

Samsung’s 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab likely to launch at CTIA

Torn between the 7-inch and 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab? Well, it looks like Samsung is about to solve that problem for you come March 22nd. According to an invite making the rounds, the Samsung Mobile team is planning to hold a Mobile Unpacked event at CTIA in Orlando, and as the graphic suggests, the focus will be a new sized Tab. We’re assuming it will be an 8.9-inch version, since the invite shows an 8 and 9 flanked by a 7 and 10. That sure lines up with what we’ve heard before, but we have to admit, it does seems like a lot of tablet offerings for one company. For some odd reason, we haven’t received this invitation yet, but we’re assuming we’re invited (obviously, it’s not a party without Engadget!) and thus will be there covering all the action live. Stay tuned.

Verizon now offering 7-inch Galaxy Tab for $300 on a two-year contract

Verizon is bringing a nice bit of consistency to its tablet offerings today by introducing a new two-year deal on the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The 7-inch tablet was previously available only on an unsubsidized basis, however now that the Motorola Xoom has become purchasable with a $200 subsidy in exchange for a 24-month commitment, Verizon is extending the same courtesy to potential Tab buyers as well. That means you now have a choice between the $500 strings-free Galaxy Tab or a $300 version that binds you to Verizon for a good little while.
