Bored 10-year-old girl hacker finds zero-day exploit in iOS & Android games

Most kids at age 10 would just move on to another game if they were bored with the one they were playing. But Californian girl hacker CyFi isn’t any ordinary kid, and instead decided to try and work around her frustrations with the farm-style games she liked playing. That tinkering led to the discovery of […]

Gigantic LED wall provides gaming at Sziget Fest, destroys your cred from miles away

We can’t think of a better way to promote your company than with a 30 meter high (10 stories) tower filled with all sorts of tech goodness. Vodafone plans on doing just that, with what will be the tallest building in Hungarian festival history at next week’s Sziget Festival. This monstrosity will not only be a lookout platform, but it will employ 250 square meters (about 2690 square feet) of LED walls. For what, you might ask? Why, gaming of course — festival goers can play Rocket Bullet Storm, if they’re man or woman enough to risk their gamer cred in front of thousands. If using 1.5 million LED units wasn’t enough to entice attendees, the structure will also offer free internet access, charging stations and host DJ sets that last through the night. We can only hope that this will catch on elsewhere, so that our Michael Jackson: The Experience skills can be broadcast for miles.

Sony’s PlayStation Vita goes up for pre-order at Best Buy Canada

It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here — or at least its pre-order page is. Sony’s hotly anticipated PlayStation Vita has been on our minds since January, and now it’s making its Canadian North American pre-order debut via Best Buy Canada. The product pages for both the WiFi-only and 3G editions list a release date of March 30th — which lines up with previous reports that the console won’t be gracing your stocking this Christmas — but we’d take that estimate with a heaping fistful of salt. If you’re itching to throw down some Canadian dollars, however, feel free to hop on over to the source to secure yours now.

[Thanks, Silverfox]

Chrome OS evolved: from CR-48 to Samsung Series 5

When Google first announced Chrome OS, there were a lot of skeptics. Is the browser really all we need anymore? If you’re the right kind of person, sort of. Chrome’s meteoric rise in market share has taught something extremely useful to a company who lives and dies by whether or not you are connected to […]

GameStop brings digital download purchases to stores, thus completing the retail circle

In some weird alternative universe, this is how retail is done: you walk into a store, buy a voucher for a digital product, and then download it. It’s a model that GameStop is embracing by offering digital PC game purchases through its retail locations. There are certain benefits to buying from a brick and mortar location — for one thing, customers can use trade-in credits for their purchases. And those who pre-order a digital copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution — the first game being offered through this model — will receive some extras including downloads of earlier entries in the series. Just be mindful of pop-ups — they’re way worse in real life.

Namco decides to make 3DS save games permanent

Today we have proof that game publishers in Japan either don’t keep up with the news, or just don’t care. Proof of this comes in the form of Namco deciding it’s a good idea to ship 3DS games with save games that you cannot delete. It was only a month ago that Capcom caused uproar […]

Guitar Hero to be resurrected, retooled, and launch reunion tour

Guitar Hero ResurrectionStop mourning wannabe rock stars — Guitar Hero is coming back. We heard the rumors of its demise were greatly exaggerated, but now word has come straight from Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick that the game is currently being reinvented for a modern, more demanding audience. As he told Forbes, “we’re going to take the products out of the market, and we’re not going to tell anybody what we’re doing for awhile… we’re going to use new studios and reinvent Guitar Hero. And so that’s what we’re doing with it now.” So there you go — Guitar Hero’s retirement was only temporary. Like any good performer it’ll be back before you’ve even had a chance to miss it. Looks like the franchise will keep rocking out well past its prime. What’s the console equivalent of playing a state fair?
