Sony’s PlayStation Vita goes up for pre-order at Best Buy Canada

It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here — or at least its pre-order page is. Sony’s hotly anticipated PlayStation Vita has been on our minds since January, and now it’s making its Canadian North American pre-order debut via Best Buy Canada. The product pages for both the WiFi-only and 3G editions list a release date of March 30th — which lines up with previous reports that the console won’t be gracing your stocking this Christmas — but we’d take that estimate with a heaping fistful of salt. If you’re itching to throw down some Canadian dollars, however, feel free to hop on over to the source to secure yours now.

The Ultimate Gamer?

Just when you thought you were a mad gamer because you had a few different systems! The picture above is from Joystiq’s contest and this was the winner who had 32 systems and 21 of them are actually hooked up.

Instead of dumping the cash on a decent TV this gamer decides to put all of his money into video game systems and adding to his collection of games (looks like he has 568 right now). It also looks like he must be a little short on cash because there is no PSP…maybe it is just tucked behind one of his Atari’s. :D

So, who’s up for a little Virtual Boy?

How can this be? Sony’s new handheld console already passed through the FCC and was even leaked on a UK Blockbuster flyer that stated an October release date. Yet apparently these clues count for nothing, because Bloomberg reports Kazuo Hirai as saying that the Vita won’t launch in the US and Europe until early next year — with only Japan getting the device before Christmas. Why would Sony be content to miss out on all that festive trade? We have absolutely no idea, but it looks like we’ll have to email Santa a revised wish list.

That label up there may not look like much, but the WiFi test report shown after the break makes one thing exceptionally clear: Sony’s PlayStation Vita just cleared FCC testing. For those unfamiliar with the process, this is widely regarded as the final step before a consumer electronics device is shipped to retailers here in the States, and given that “fall” date we’ve been hearing about, it sure looks as if Sony’s on pace to keep its promise. So, you did save room on this year’s wish list for yet another console… right?

GameStop brings digital download purchases to stores, thus completing the retail circle

In some weird alternative universe, this is how retail is done: you walk into a store, buy a voucher for a digital product, and then download it. It’s a model that GameStop is embracing by offering digital PC game purchases through its retail locations. There are certain benefits to buying from a brick and mortar location — for one thing, customers can use trade-in credits for their purchases. And those who pre-order a digital copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution — the first game being offered through this model — will receive some extras including downloads of earlier entries in the series. Just be mindful of pop-ups — they’re way worse in real life.

Blockbuster may have had its share of trouble here in the States, but that doesn’t mean its British brother isn’t doing well enough to have (and leak) a big-shot release date or two. According to a flyer brandishing the Blockbuster logo and that good ‘ol co.uk extension, the PlayStation Vita will land in the United Kingdom on October 28th. That’s ominously close to Halloween — not that we’re suggesting anybody is having pre-holiday PSV boot-shakes, or anything — and the flyer’s fall release prediction squares up nicely with Sony’s “end of 2011” launch window. As always, we suggest taking rumors and leaks such as this with a grain of salt — but considering Sony’s sinkable record regarding loose lips, we’d understand a low sodium approach. Nintendo 3DS price drops from $249 to $169 August 12th, current owners get 20 free games

The price of the Nintendo 3DS in the US is dropping precipitously August 12th from $249 to $169, with other regions getting a similar price break in their respective currency. If you’re one of the 830,000~ US gamers that have already shelled out, don’t be too disappointed as your early adopting ways will be rewarded with free games. The thank you gift for gamers that have logged into the eShop at least once before the price cut will be 10 free NES virtual console games before they’re widely available, plus 10 more Game Boy Advance virtual console games — that Nintendo is apparently not planning on releasing to the general public — before the end of the year. Think someone is feeling pressure from the oncoming PlayStation Vita?
