Square Enix launches Hippos Lab for smartphone game development

Square Enix isn’t exactly a stranger to the smartphone scene, but it looks like the company behind Final Fantasy (among countless other games) is now going to be moving quite a bit beyond ports of its existing games for other consoles. The company has just announced the launch of its new Hippos Lab game development studio, which will be primarily focused on creating “high quality original content” for smartphones. Details are unfortunately still pretty light beyond that, but the studio has apparently been up and running since March 7th, and it says it hopes to have its first game “ready soon.” No word if they’ve scored the license for Hungry Hungry Hippos.

A Few Android App Developers Rake in Millions

The iOS platform isn’t the only way to make money on the mobile apps scene.

Tech news site Electricpig took a look at eight groups that have made it big — more than six-digits big — with hit Android apps.

Better Android Apps, for example, has made approximately $1.34 million from purchases of its hits Better Keyboard and Open Home. Yongzh created emulators for the PlayStation, Sega, Nintendo and Atari systems, and gathered about $1.81 million from sales of these apps.

“Conventional wisdom told us that to be successful, we had to focus on iOS. Conventional wisdom was wrong,” said Gary Gattis, CEO of Spacetime Studios.

That certainly seems to be true with the tower-defense game Robo Defense. It has also been a big winner, netting creator Lupis Labs more than $2.09 million.

An estimated 3.7 billion Android apps have been downloaded to date, according to AndroLib. Many developers wish that number would rise at a faster rate and are counting on tools like in-app payments to spur app purchases and developer earnings. However, that hasn’t stopped developers such as Eddie Kim, creator of Car Locator, or almost anyone else on this list, from netting big profits.

These high sales figures illustrate that Android’s app market is finally coming to fruition as a solid distribution platform, where software programmers can make good money. Within months of the opening of Apple’s App Store in the summer of 2008, a few lucky programmers quickly struck gold with hot sales of their apps.

Android has been around for about the same time, and only now are we beginning to see comparably high sales figures for Android app makers. Though Google’s app market has been slower to mature, these success stories should give programmers more incentive to make killer apps for Android-powered tablets and smartphones.

Beautiful Widgets netted its maker, LevelUp Studio, more than $934,000. Halfbrick Studios (maker of Fruit Ninja) has netted more than $242,000 after porting its iOS favorite to Android.

Other big winners, thanks to pop-up advertising, include Rovio, for (what else?) Angry Birds, and Arron La for Advanced Task Manager.

Spacetime StudiosPocket Legends, a 3-D MMO, has managed to garner profits of $8,000 per day from in-app payments, making it a shoo-in for six-figure earnings in the not-too-distant future.

“The Android platform has seen phenomenal growth, and it’s great that new avenues for app distribution are opening up,” Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said in a recent news release.

The addition of new marketplaces like Amazon’s App Store is proof, showing that Google’s OS has the potential to be just as lucrative as Apple’s, and companies want to get in on the action.

Spacetime’s Gattis summed up the Android app scene pretty nicely: “In some ways, it’s kind of like the wild, wild West,” he said, “but that’s where the Gold Rush people made their claim.”

Nintendo ‘moving away’ from insisting on 3D to play 3DS games, wants them all playable in 2D

The Nintendo 3DS has a slider in its side. A slider that adjusts its namesake feature, three-dimensional imagery, up and down in intensity relative to the user’s preference. Now, although the 3DS’ screen doesn’t force glasses on you, it does demand that it be held just right in order to get the most out of the 3D effect and we can imagine plenty of people might neglect its extra dimension in favor of old-fashioned 2D (not to mention those who can’t tolerate the third D for health reasons). It’s encouraging, therefore, to hear that Nintendo has taken the stance that no game should require 3D as part of its gameplay mechanics. That’s the word from Hideki Konno, one of Nintendo’s veteran producers, who says the company wants all of its 3DS games to be playable in 2D, essentially reducing the 3D aspect to an aesthetic enhancement. Some might argue that’s underusing the portable’s hardware potential, but Nintendo has always been in the business of pleasing the mass market — there’s nothing preventing some daring developer from making a game entirely dependent on a three-dimensional perspective.

Wii Fit Launches in U.S. T-Minus 2 Days

This article was written on May 19, 2008 by CyberNet.

In just two days on Wednesday May 21st, the highly anticipated Wii Fit, an exercise game for Nintendo’s Wii will launch in the U.S. Looking over the ads that came in Sunday’s newspaper, you can just tell that this is going to be a big title for Nintendo. Best Buy dedicated the whole back page of their ad to the game which will be sold with the Balance Board peripheral for $89.99.

The game has already been released in Japan, Australia and the UK and has been extremely successful in those locations. That success is expected to continue in the United States and several locations who were accepting pre-order sales of the game are sold-out. One such example is Amazon.com who displays a message saying that Wii Fit is temporarily out-of-stock because the game is in “great demand.”

With over 40 different types of activities falling into four different categories including yoga poses, muscle workouts, aerobic exercise and balance games, this is one game that is sure to get people moving, assuming that they can get their hands on a copy of it. Hopefully this game doesn’t end-up being as difficult to get as the Wii console itself has been.

Anybody pre-order Wii Fit or intend to head out to the store on Wednesday morning to get the game?

Valve’s Gabe Newell hints at possible Steam port to iOS / Android, may be blowing hot air

We’d recommend taking this all with a healthy grain of salt for now, but according to a fortunate Steam Powered forum member who scored a trip by Valve’s headquarters, the company’s considering an iOS / Android port of Steam. Yeah, Steam — you know, that wildly popular game distribution service that’s doing its darnedest to kill off boxed video game sales. As the story goes, Political Gamer was able to sit down with Valve’s own Gabe Newell for a tick, and while the topics of conversation were obviously varied, one point in particular piqued our interest. Purportedly, Gabe confirmed that the company is “looking into the iOS / Android platform for possible expansions with Steam,” which makes absolute sense given just how well-received the iPod touch and iPhone have been by gamers. To boot, Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play is just around the bend, and if Amazon’s able to launch its own app store, why not push out a game-centric one from a name that people already know and trust? Of course, pondering the possibility is far different than investing resources into a new product, so until we hear that the latter is definitely happening, we’ll be doing our best to suppress our expectations. Call it self-preservation.

Alienware M11x R3 specs leaked, brings Sandy Bridge to your next LAN party?

Alienware’s laptops first hopped on the Sandy Bridge bandwagon when the company’s top-of-the-line M17x got Intel’s second-gen Core processors, and now it appears the more budget-conscious M11x may get some Sandy Bridge love too. According to Dell News and more — who correctly foretold the 3D screen on the M17x R3 before its January debut, among other things — the littlest alien laptop is getting your choice of Core i5-2537M, Core i7-2617M, and Core i7-2657M chips ranging in speeds from 1.4GHz to 2.7GHz. Accompanying the new silicon is an optional 750GB HDD (up from 640GB) and an upgrade from 800MHz to speedy 1333MHz RAM. And, to keep you gaming wherever you please, the company will offer optional 3g, LTE, and WiMAX radios as well. Unfortunately, one minor detail didn’t make it out — how much will the extra goodies cost?

Hacker nets two years in jail after pilfering £7 million in virtual poker chips

Crime, it just doesn’t pay. Well, actually it does, to the tune of £53,612, but then you get caught and you have to work off that salary with two years at Her Majesty’s pleasure. One Ashley Mitchell, an enterprising 29-year old from Devon, England, managed to break into Farmville maker Zynga‘s mainframe, hijack the identities of two of its staffers, and procure for himself a cool £7 million ($11.4m) in virtual poker chips. He then proceeded to sell about a third of them for the above sum, while consuming a big chunk of the rest in satisfying his own gambling habit. Ashley already had a history of digital malfeasance, having previously hacked into the systems of Torbay Council, his former employer, and is now on the receiving end of a two-year prison term for his current crime plus the activation of a 30-week suspended sentence. There’s a warning in this tale of woe for us all, however — Monsieur Mitchell piggybacked on his neighbors’ unsecured WiFi networks in order to do his dastardly deeds. Slap a password on that router, won’t you?

Xperia Play to be exclusive launch device for Gameloft’s BackStab action game

It has begun. The Xperia Play, a device that promises to take mobile gaming to its next level of awesomeness, just scooped itself a one-month exclusive on a brand new action adventure game. BackStab, produced by mobile game makers Gameloft, has a “free roaming 3D environment” (old school 3D, not the fancy new stuff), filled with some decidedly yummy-looking graphics and what appears to be an emphasis on battling multiple enemies at once. All we’re seeing here reminds us of desktop or console games, not the usual mobile fare, so we’re most intrigued to see this game in action. It’ll hit all of Android eventually, but for the first 30 or so days after its launch in Q2 2011, it’ll be only on Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play. Check it out in the gallery below.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Commercials Keep on Being Creepy

XperiaPlayAd.jpg

We all remember when the first Xperia Play commercial creeped us out during the Super Bowl, and now Sony Ericsson continues to bring on the creepy with its latest ads for the phone. The new series feature actress Kristen Schaal, telling us a little bit about the phone with her cartoonish little voice, oh, and some kittens, violence, cussing, and demons thrown in, too.

In the one ad, she starts out saying “If you’re like me, you have eyeballs” and then she goes on to explain her fondness of looking at cute kittens on the phone, before morphing into a warrior to declare her love for defeating ogres and demon lords, and then she goes back to the kittens.

But perhaps the creepiest ad of the bunch shows Schaal’s description of the phone played backwards, where she becomes possessed, like the girl in the Exorcist, with burning, red eyes and a demonic voice as she tells you that the phone gives you power, intense gaming, violence, and adrenaline. Yep, scary and creepy, check.

And if that doesn’t do it for you, you can always watch Schaal thoroughly enjoy stabbing and shooting herself in another ad. If these ads don’t convince you to buy a Xperia Play, I don’t know what would…

Check out a few of the freakiest Xperia Play ads after the jump.
