Sony Launches Two FPS Gaming Headsets

Sony-DR-GA500-and-DR-GA200-Ultimate-Weapon-Gaming-headsets.jpgSony is so confident its newest gaming headsets will blow away the competition that there will be a free videogame bundled with each headset.

The new models, DR-GA500 and DR-GA200, are specifically designed for first-person-shooter games. Starting Oct. 15, each headset will ship with a free copy of the new Medal Of Honor single-player FPS as part of a special promotion.

The GA500 features 7.1-channel surround sound, perfect for intense FPS gaming situations where you need to hear your enemies before you see them. The 40-mm drive units offer outstanding sound quality with resonant, living bass, and crisp high frequencies.

Both headsets feature a compact boom microphone, microphone mute, and volume control. And with the “triple enfolding” design, both are designed to be comfortable to wear for long periods. They look nice, too.

Announced by Sony Europe, the headsets be in UK stores by mid-September and will retail for around £150. There is no word yet on US pricing or availability.

Sony takes aim at iPhone gaming in new PSP ad

Well, it looks like Nintendo isn’t the only gaming company that thinks Apple is the “enemy of the future” — Sony has now also taken aim at iPhone gaming in a new PSP ad featuring Kevin Butler‘s pint-sized counterpart, Marcus Rivers. In it, Marcus reminds viewers that the iPhone is built for things like “texting your grandma and calling your girl,” while the PSP is “built for big boy games,” some of which can be had for as little as $9.99. See the whole thing for yourself after the break.

Xbox Live launch titles for Windows Phone 7 finally revealed, we’ve got the full preview

We’ve known that proper Xbox Live gaming (powered by XNA) was coming to Windows Phone 7 devices, but we’d yet to see any of that thumb-spraining goodness in action besides a brief demo and a few developer videos. Well, Microsoft has finally come clean with details about its launch strategy for the platform, and from where we sit, it’s definitely looking pretty promising. First off, the company has announced a full list of launch titles for WP7 handsets, including some familiar names and franchises like Castlevania, Halo: Waypoint, Star Wars, Crackdown, and Guitar Hero, alongside a handful of newer properties like the ultra-cute ilomilo, produced in-house by Microsoft Game Studios. In total, the company will launch with over 60 game titles, with new offerings appearing every week in the Xbox Live Marketplace, just like its big brother console version. We’ve got all the details, a full list of the launch titles, and our hands-on preview after the break — so read on to get the scoop!

Splitfish Debuts Three Eco-Friendly Controllers

FragFXShark.jpg

Gaming peripheral maker Splitfish just announced that it’s adding three new devices to its lineup with the FragFx Shark for PlayStation 3, PC, and Mac. What makes this black-and-blue peripheral green is that it’s built with power-saving technology so that a single AA battery is good for over 50 hours of gaming time and over 500 hours on standby.

Splitfish will be at Gamescon 2010, running from August 18 to 22 in Germany, showing off the Shark line and also showing FragFx devices for the first time. Convention-goers will get a first look at the FragFx Piranha and the FragFx Barracuda, both for the PlayStation 3. The company will also show the FragFx Evolution Wireless, a dual-handed programmable motion controller for sports games.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition ships with full-blown RC spy vehicle

We tell ya, these game bundles are getting completely out of hand… and we love it. If you reckoned that Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition bundle was hot stuff, wait till you get a load of this. Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition (promo video beyond the break) just went up for pre-order at select retailers in the US, and if we had to guess, we’d surmise that every last one of ’em will claimed in just a few hours. Aside from getting a beastly box, the game itself and some sort of medal, the package also includes a fully functional RC spy car, complete with a camera that sends back video and audio to the owner’s LCD-equipped controller. There’s absolutely no telling what the MSRP on this thing will be, but our comrades over at Joystiq are pegging it at $149.99. Mom, dad — go ahead and add this to our holiday wish list.

Palm Pixi shows off 3D gaming chops with webOS 1.4.5 release (video)

What with all the “battery optimization” excitement, we nearly forgot that Sprint’s new webOS 1.4.5 update doesn’t just empower the Pre; it also finally brings PDK’d OpenGL and SDL support to the Palm Pixi. On the off chance you don’t speak developer lingo, that’s short for 3D apps and games, and as it turns out the pint-sized Pixi doesn’t play the latter half-badly. PreCentral fired up a copy of Need For Speed: Undercover on the freshly-upgraded handset immediately above, and found the game perfectly playable with “decent” framerates and only slightly sub-par load times. Watch their spiffy Nissan turn tricks right after the break, and pray companies get cracking on some Unreal Engine 3 apps soon.

Killer 2100 network card sees $40 price drop, adoption by Alienware

For a computer peripherals startup, there’s nothing quite like landing a contract with the big boys, and that’s precisely what the whiz kids over at Bigfoot Networks have done. When we spoke with company executives back at Computex, we got the impression that they were pushing for OEM integration, and if you’re going to aim, you may as well aim high. As of today, Dell’s Alienware line can be configured with one of the well-regarded network cards pre-installed, and while you may find it impossible to believe that a NIC could lower your ping time, quite a few critics have been proven wrong. The card can be added to the Alienware Aurora, Aurora ALX, Area-51 and Area-51 ALX desktops, and if you’ve already got a tower you’re pleased with, you’ll probably enjoy the $40 price drop on standalone retail units. If you need your memory jogged, that makes the once-$129.99 card a far more tantalizing $89.99.

Lenovo side project to launch Xbox 360 / Kinect knockoff in China: hello, eBox

Well… this is interesting. Prior to Kinect hitting the masses in November, one Eedoo looks to be doing the world one better (or worse) with the eBox. In what can only be described as a bizarre tale of mystery, a Lenovo co-founded company has decided to produce what amounts to an Xbox 360 knockoff as well as a motion sensing peripheral that unquestionably takes inspiration from Kinect. In fact, we don’t even know if conventional controllers are a part of the deal, but word on the street has this one getting official in November and shipping early in 2011. Beyond that, details are few and far between, but you can follow the links below for a couple of videos (one’s after the break) and a smattering of cellphone snapshots.
