CyberNet News Gets A Little Wider

CyberNet LogoWell, we managed to put together a wider version of CyberNet because it was requested by a few people. The content area is a little wider and the most obvious thing is that there are two sidebars. We aren’t going to clutter up the sidebars like a lot of sites do but it makes it easier to see things like the calendar that we just added. Pretty soon we’ll start adding a poll every week to the sidebar so that we can get our community involved and spark some fun discussions! :D

We definitely took into consideration those people who are still using monitors with a resolution of 800 x 600 or lower. Those people will still be able to see all of the content perfectly without scrolling sideways but the last sidebar won’t be visible. In the last two months we have had over 500,000 visitors and only 2% of those visitors were using a resolution lower than 1024 x 768, so we thought we should expand the view a little so that the other 98% of you can enjoy the use of your full browser window.

We would definitely love to hear any feedback you may have regarding the new look so leave us a comment below. Thanks!

Casio Celebrates a Billion Calculators!

This article was written on January 10, 2007 by CyberNet.

Casio is celebrating their Billionth calculator sold.  That’s a lot of calculators! The very first calculator from Casio was their model 001.  It went on sale way back in 1965. Okay, maybe I shouldn’t say WAY back in 65′, if you were born that year, you’re only 41. So, 41 years ago, the Casio model 001 sold for $2,200. That was a lot of money in 1965! They decided they’d celebrate a billion by releasing a list of their favorite words that can be written on the display and read when you turn the calculator upside down. The spokesman for Casio said, Everyone has fond memories of making rude and funny words on the display when they should really have been concentrating in class.”  Boy, isn’t that true! Those were my exact thoughts when I saw they put together a list. So, here is Casio’s top 10:

  1. Boobies – 5318008
  2. Bellies – 5317738
  3. Boobless – 55378008
  4. Bodies – 531608
  5. Sizzles – 5372215
  6. Gobbles – 5378806
  7. Google – 376006
  8. Boogie – 316008
  9. Shell Oil – 71077345
  10. Esso – 0553

And following up with that, here’s the English letters that can be written with the digits of a calculator:

1 = I
2=Z
3=E
4=h
5=S
6=G
7=L
8=B
0=O

If I created the list, I would have also included:

  1. Hello – 07734
  2. Blog – 6078
  3. Hi – 14
  4. Lego – 0637

Ahhh.. good old calculator fun :) Congrats Casio!

How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

This article was written on June 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

change oil.pngThis isn’t technology news per se, but it’s definitely worth writing about. The question of the day is, how often should you change your oil? If you’re like us, you’ve always been lead to believe that it was a must to change the oil every three months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. Even when you go to get your oil changed somewhere, they usually put a sticker on your windshield with the date and/or mileage when you need to come back and it’s always 3,000 miles or 3 months. As it turns out,that “rule” is just a myth.

A recent article over at Yahoo Autos talks about how the 3,000 mile rule is a misconception and was only necessary back in the day when single-grade, non-detergent oils were used. These days the oil is an improved product that lasts a lot longer than it used to, and the engines are better too. Because of that, most manufacturers now recommend that the oil get changed at 5,000, 7,000, or 10,000 miles under “normal driving conditions.”

Obviously the oil companies along with the companies that provide oil changes, like Jiffy Lube, are going to continue to promote the myth to get the business. Just know that even the manual for your vehicle will probably recommend an oil change at about every 7,500 miles and not 3,000 miles, if it’s newer. Of course every vehicle will be different and it does all depend on the driving conditions, so look at your manual and see what the car manufacturer recommends. I checked out the manual on my vehicle – it’s a 2000 Ford Ranger, and it says an oil change is needed every 5,000 miles.

It’s probably worth checking your manual to see what is suggested because it could save you some money in the end…

Honda Takes on Prius with Hybrid Vehicle

This article was written on August 28, 2007 by CyberNet.

Toyota priusThe message to auto-makers has been made clear – hybrid does matter and the more affordable, the better. With the unbelievable success of the Toyota Prius which has been labeled as the car that put hybrids on the map, other auto-makers have been looking to develop a car that can beat the success of the Prius, and become the “next big hybrid.” One of those auto-makers that is hoping to challenge Toyota’s Prius is Honda.

Honda is no stranger to hybrids, however, their hybrid models thus far haven’t proven to be successful. First they offered the Insight back in 99, and then they took their already successful non-hybrid vehicles, the Civic and Accord, and offered those in a hybrid version as well. As with the Insight, the hybrid version just never took-off. Now they’re attempting the hybrid route again with a brand new car with a unique look that they say will have better fuel economy than the already impressive fuel economy of the Prius.

And because price does matter, they’ll be offering it for a price below $22,000 which will place it under the Prius’s MSRP of $22,175. America hasn’t been able to get enough of the Prius, and Honda is hoping that will be the case when their Hybrid vehicle debuts sometime in 2009. Honda’s senior Vice President, John Mendel says “The Prius has become synonymous with hybrid; it’s the Kleenex of hybrids. We feel Honda should be synonymous with the most fuel-efficient company in America.”

A little competition is never a bad thing and with Honda known for their quality vehicles, I’m curious to see what they come up with, and if their version will really challenge the sales of the Prius. While Honda’s version will be priced lower than the Prius, it would still be nice to see an auto-maker come out with a reliable hybrid for under $15,000. Think it’s possible in the near future?

Bill Gates Dethroned as Richest Man

This article was written on July 03, 2007 by CyberNet.

Carlos SlimAfter 13-years, Bill Gates is no longer considered the world’s richest man. Carlos Slim is his replacement, and it comes as no surprise as he is a Mexican telecommunications leader with a bank-busting net worth of $67.8 billion.

Bill Gates is worth a mere $59.2 billion, so the lead that Slim has is quite significant. Of course, if you’re gonna do a comparison like that you should also include philanthropy work. Bill Gates is reported to have given away more than $29 billion to charities since 2000, where Slim has decided to up his commitment from $4 billion to $10 billion over the next four years. That means in four years Slim will have donated 1/3 of what Bill Gates has already done by this year.

So what company does Carlos Slim own that made him so wealthy? It’s called América Móvil and offers telecommunication services around the world. There are more than 131 million subscribers, some of which reside here in the United States. In the U.S. it is not known as América Móvil, instead it is a subsidiary called Tracfone…ring a bell? That’s a popular pay-as-you-go service for cellphones which can be purchased in retail stores around the United States.

Around the world there are 946 billionaires according to the March 2007 report by Forbes, which combined have a net worth of $3.5 trillion. So where are you at on that list? ;)

Comcast CEO Introduces Cable Internet Modem of the Future

This article was written on May 09, 2007 by CyberNet.

ComcastlogoOn Tuesday, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts introduced the cable modem of the future.  The new modem will boast download speeds of 150 megabits per second!  To put this into perspective, we’ll compare it with today’s speeds using our recent poll.

How Fast is your Internet Connection” was the question we asked most recently.  In our poll, 25% of the voters have said that their connection speed is between 3,000 and 8,000 kb/s which is a pretty fast connection, and would place them towards the top of the chart for speeds.

Converted to Mb/s, those 25% would have a speed of around 3.0 Mb/s-8.0Mb/s. Keep in mind, the download speed capability of the future is 150 Mb/s! This is a substantial increase from what’s considered top speeds presently.

Verizon Wireless’s FiOS network which has become popular recently, currently has 50 Mb/s available, and their network is capable of offering 100 Mb/s. This means that Comcast’s new modem is still a good-sized leap ahead. While they mention the download speed, there was no word on the upload speed which would be nice to know as well.

As part of this presentation, Robert Stanzione from ARRIS Group showed just how well this modem can perform. He download a 30–second 300 megabyte TV commercial within a few seconds which would have taken a typical cable modem around 16 minutes to download.

He also downloaded 32 volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica 2007 and Meriam-Webster’s dictionary in just under four minutes.  When you stop to think about how much information is jam-packed into those encyclopedia’s, it’s really impressive. A standard cable modem would have taken three hours and 12 minutes to complete the task!

I was excited when my cable Internet company recently upped my download speeds from 5 Mbps to 7 Mbps. I can’t even begin to comprehend 150 Mbps that Comcast CEO Brian Roberts says will be available in less than two years.

Make Your Wireless Network Secure In A New Way

Make Your Wireless Network Secure In A New Way

Many of us have pulled out our laptops somewhere and when you went to connect to a wireless network you were amazed to see how many people have unsecured networks. If you live in a place where there is a lot of housing nearby, such as apartments, then you will especially see this. It only takes a few steps to add security to your router, but maybe you should do something else instead *evil laugh*.

This will require a Linux server just like most cool networking tricks do. If you are on your toes and have some spare time then you can give your leeching neighbors quite a treat. This tutorial walks you through how you can have unapproved computers display images upside down on a Web page (as pictured above). Unfortunately it doesn’t do it for the text as well but I am sure the flipped images would do enough damage to their little brain.

Get 35% Off of eBay Purchases via Microsoft’s Cashback

This article was written on June 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

If you couldn’t tell by now, we’re all about saving a buck whenever we can. That’s why we told you about how you could get 10% off of eBay purchases through Microsoft’s Cashback program. We’re going to bring it up once more, only because they’ve sweetened the deal. Now when you search for certain items, you’ll see a link to get 35% off your purchase.

Razr - Live Search.png

We decided to go to Live Search and search for the Razr once more, and sure enough we saw the link to get up to 35% off of a purchase if you pay with PayPal. The key is that not all items are going to return the 35% offer. Some ads will still show 10% off so you just need to play around and search for different items. Aside from Razr, searching for “Cheap Xbox” also worked.

Once you see the ad, click on it and you’ll be taken to eBay. Once there you can go and search for most anything and still get the 35% percent off. When you think about it, that’s pretty significant. A $300 item would be $195 and a $200 item would be $130. If you have something in mind you need to purchase from eBay anyways, this is a great deal.

Note: This offer is available only to U.S. residents.
