Happy Birthday Ryan!

This article was written on November 15, 2007 by CyberNet.

It’s Ryan’s Birthday today and knowing how much he dis-likes attention on his birthday, I thought the only appropriate thing to do was, well…. give him attention! It’s more fun that way. :) So Happy Birthday Ryan!

Verizon’s Unlimited EVDO Wireless Not So Unlimited

This article was written on August 09, 2006 by CyberNet.

Verizon's Unlimited EVDO Wireless Not So UnlimitedVerizon’s EVDO service lets users take broadband Internet wherever they may end up so that you can keep in touch with your friends, family, or co-workers. However, a few weeks ago ConsumerAffairs.com had an interesting article on how Verizon really does limit their unlimited wireless service.

Verizon customers are able to receive the unlimited wireless package for just $59.99 a month while non-Verizon customers will have to dish out $79.99! Unlimited sounds great but how much is really too much? A customer received this letter from Verizon claiming their usage was more than 40 times what the norm is:

We found that your usage over the past 30 days exceeded 10 Gigabytes. This level of usage is so extraordinarily high that it could only have been attained by activities, such as streaming and/or downloading movies and video, prohibited by the terms and conditions…

After doing some research the customer found the fine print in the terms that states:

data sessions may be used with wireless devices for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access. services cannot be used: (1) for uploading, downloading or streaming of movies, music or games; (2) with server devices or with host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, Voice over IP (VoIP), automated machine-to-machine connections, or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing.

So basically if you do anything that will force you to leave your Web browser then you are screwed. I understand that they are trying to keep their bandwidth levels low but streaming audio and video is becoming a way of life for so many people. Judging by what Verizon recommends as “average usage” you will only be able to download 8.3MB per day! I guess downloading that DVD ISO with Linux on it will be out of the question :) .

Hey Bloomberg, Steve Jobs Isn’t Dead!

This article was written on August 28, 2008 by CyberNet.

Bloomberg.com.pngIf someone were to ask me who I’d rather meet in person if given the choice between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, I’d pick Bill Gates. He’s an excellent public speaker, and he always seems to be a humble, gracious man. Steve Jobs on the other hand, it’s not that I don’t like him, it’s just that there’s an arrogance to him that can get on my nerves. Despite this, I still feel like I have to stick up for the guy. Lately he’s been getting a lot of grief over his health. Most recently, news source Bloomberg “mistakenly” published his obituary. Yes, his obituary.

According to CNET, it’s not unusual for big media outlets to have obituaries written up for famed individuals, even if they are perfectly healthy. That way if something should happen, they can immediately post an announcement and make a few minor changes if necessary. It sounds kinda creepy if you ask me, but it makes sense. This helps explain why Bloomberg has an obituary written for Jobs but it doesn’t explain how someone mistakenly sent the pre-written obituary out over the wire for all to see.

If Jobs ever wondered what he accomplished in life (I don’t think he would, but…), now he knows. According to Bloomberg, he “helped make personal computers as easy to use as telephones, changed the way animated films are made, persuaded consumers to tune into digital music, and refashioned the mobile phone.”

Of course with this mistake came more talk and speculation on his health and the way he looked (rather thin) at WWDC . Like I said, the guy can be arrogant sometimes, but it’s about time he is given a break!

Police Lose A New Car Because Of GPS Failure

This article was written on October 02, 2006 by CyberNet.

Bait Car To help catch car thieves police sometimes setup a “bait car” which is actually intended to be stolen. They rig the car up gadgets such as GPS units so that after the car is stolen they will be able to follow the thief, arrest them, and retrieve their precious new car.

Of course that is how it is supposed to work. In Dallas, Texas that wasn’t exactly the case. The police had rigged the bait car with a GPS unit and they were “happy” to see it get stolen. The problem was that the GPS unit then malfunctioned and the thief got away.

The thing that shocks me the most is that they only have one GPS unit inside the car. I would have thought that they would plan for a unit to fail and so they would have put other tracking devices inside as well. I mean really, how often does something actually work when you want it to…especially electronics!

Teen Arrested for 20 Second Transformers Movie Clip

This article was written on August 02, 2007 by CyberNet.

TransformersA Zero Tolerance policy means zero tolerance, and unfortunately for one 19 year old girl, that policy could land her in jail for a year. The story goes like this: Jhannet Sejas was out with her boyfriend to celebrate her birthday. They took a video camera along to record memories of their day at the mall, and then headed to the theater to see Transformers. According to Jhannet, she decided to record a small 20–second clip so that she could show it to her younger brother who wanted to see the movie. That resulted in a visit from the police who ultimately arrested her after Regal Cinemas decided to prosecute.

Should Jhannet be considered a “pirate” for her 20 second clip that she had no intention of distributing? She’ll be heading to trial sometime this month when a judge will have to determine if she is a pirater and deserves jail time for her 20 second movie clip. The fact that she brought a video camera into the movie theater and expected to go unnoticed wasn’t a smart-move on her part. However, if she really only recorded the movie for a few seconds and this is proven (her camera was seized), I think the judge will be kind enough to dismiss the charges and warn her that taking a video camera into the theater these days is not a good idea.

ATM Thief Reprograms Money Dispenser

This article was written on July 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

I thought it was bad when a message appeared on an ATM saying that Windows needed to be activated, but I think it’s worse when the owner of an ATM doesn’t change the master password from it’s default which results in an “ATM Robbery.”

Atm activation

An ATM Robbery is exactly what happened in Pennsylvania last month when a man walked in to Mastorocco’s Market and reprogrammed the ATM to think that it was dishin’ out singles instead of twenties. Big difference there, huh? As mentioned, the owner of the ATM is responsible for changing the default passcode to prevent things like this from happening. And when the passcode for the Triton 9100 machine is as simple as 123456 and printed in service manuals easily found online, there is no wonder that this happened!

The man came to the store two days in a row and managed to get a total of $1,540 between the two visits. I’m surprised that someone hadn’t managed to do this prior! The owner’s excuse for not changing the master password was, “I’m not a technical person. I cut meat and I sell groceries, That’s my job. I don’t know anything about an ATM. I put money into it, people take it out, and I get a reading at the end of the day.”

Do you think the owner has changed the password now? I’d sure hope so! What a lesson to learn…
