I’ve always heard that the Macy’s Fireworks in New York are awesome, but I have yet to see them in person. I  also know there are some pretty amazing Fireworks shows around the World, so where’s the best fireworks that you’ve seen?

Note for tomorrow: Posting will be light tomorrow as well so that we can prep to launch the new site!

One Laptop Per Child Update: 1 Million Ready

This article was written on February 21, 2007 by CyberNet.

We’ve been covering One Laptop Per Child for a long time now.  Back in December of 2005, Quanta was announced as the Manufacturer, and it was known as the $100 Laptop. Since the original announcement, there have been all kinds of changes in look, function, and even price. As of now, the laptops will cost around $130 which isn’t too far off from the original target.  Eventually, the price is expected to creep down to around $100 which makes this an extremely affordable option for countries to look into.

Different companies and organizations have been catering to the project, like Opera with their web browser designed specifically for this purpose. Wikipedia has also gotten in on the OLPC Project, and computers will come loaded with Wikipedia articles for offline viewing.

After much speculation, and media coverage, the first 1 million units have been confirmed. While Libya was the first to order the units, the first million are going to a number of different countries like Argentina, Brazil, Libya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Thailand, and Uruguay.

You may also remember the rumor that the OLPC might possibly go retail.  After the first shipment to developing countries, it will definitely be interesting to see what will come of it in the United States as far as the retail aspect goes.

And as Daily Tech points out, the price may drop even sooner with Intel testing OLPC’s competition, the Classmate PC in Brazil.

Deflexion Offers Laser Chess To Test Your Strategy Skills

Do you think you are the ultimate chess player? Well Deflexion will test your level of skill by changing how the game of chess is played. Using a laser, your goal is to move your mirrors around in an effort to reflect a laser onto your opponents pieces. This would definitely take some getting used to but will also force you to plan ahead so that you can set up your pieces just right. The real game of chess also relies heavily on planning, but many people that play real chess don’t focus on that and play just for fun. It would be cool to put some of the best chess players in front of one of these boards to see how well they compete. The cost for this is $40 which isn’t reasonable considering how fun it would be to play.

XM and Sirius to Lower Prices, Both Hit with Lawsuit

This article was written on March 21, 2007 by CyberNet.

Just a month ago when XM and Sirius were ready to ink a deal, they knew there would be problems with the FCC approving what could potentially become a monopoly.  They’re still fighting that battle, but so far what has come out of it is a promise of lower prices.

They’ve promised lawmakers who are fighting the deal that prices would be lowered and that no monopoly would come of it should a merge take place. Currently the monthly price for service is $12.95. After the merge, customers would be offered a lower monthly price, but with fewer channels.  They’d also offer a more expensive option that would include more channels. Essentially there would be different tiers of service and pricing.

XM and Sirius really haven’t come across smooth water yet, especially with the recent lawsuit they are both facing for patent infringement.  Keystone Autonics filed the lawsuit saying that both XM and Sirius are using technology that is protected under a patent that they filed just this year in January of 2007.

For now, XM and Sirius are left to battle it out with lawmakers over the merger that would save them an estimated $7 billion per year, as well as a judge over patent infringement. Not a good start to 2007 for satellite radio!

Bill Gates Falls to 3rd Richest Man

This article was written on November 02, 2007 by CyberNet.

worlds richest man Back in July, Bill Gates was dethroned as the World’s Richest Man after 13 years of standing king of the hill. His replacement, Carlos Slim, is owner of a Mexican telecommunications company and at the time, had a net worth of $67.8 billion.  Given that Bill Gates lasted on top for quite a while, you’d think that Slim would have had at least a year reigning on top, however he didn’t. The World’s new richest man (for today anyways) is Mukesh Ambani from India.

Ambani is the largest shareholder of a company called Reliance Industries. A recent strong rally in Reliance shares put him standing on top. As of today, the top five richest people include:

  1. Mukesh Ambani – $63.2 billion
  2. Carlos Slim Helu – $62.2993 billion
  3. William Gates – $62.29 billion
  4. Warren Buffett – $55.9 billion
  5. Lakshmi Mittal – $50.9 billion

As CNBC reports, these calculations aren’t 100% correct and there’s bound to be some margin of error. There’s such a small difference between the top three that at this point, the richest man could be changing weekly or even daily with fluctuations in the stock market.

We know that Bill Gates is very charitable with his money, giving billions to charity each year, so what does Mukesh Ambani do with his? At this point it looks like he’s more focused on himself than contributing to charities. Hopefully, once Ambani’s billion dollar home is complete he’ll start thinking about how he can use his money to help others. To put the $1 billion dollar price tag on Ambani’s home into perspective, Bill Gates’ house AND land back in 2005 were valued at a measly (in comparison) $200 million.

Thanks for the tip rogoisu!

Is Messaging Taking Over our Communication?

This article was written on November 15, 2007 by CyberNet.

A recent poll conducted by the New York Times points out how important messaging is in the lives of teens and young adults. Both instant messaging and text messaging have become so popular that teenagers are extremely comfortable with written communication and not so comfortable with verbal face-to-face communication. When I say “written communication,” I don’t mean proper written communication.  Given the huge dictionary of messaging slang’s and acronyms, conversations tend to look more like another language to someone not so “messaging” savvy. This Cingular Commercial depicts this well:

The poll found that teenagers use messaging to say something that they’d be afraid to say in person for fear of rejection like “asking-out” and “breaking-up” with someone. Teens are also more likely to use IM to chat with more than one person at a time. A 34 year old real estate agent from California said he chatted with four of five people at a time using messaging which is a number that would be considered “embarrassingly low” to the younger crowd.  Most teens and younger adults prefer messaging for “important” communication while adults tend to use the phone and email.

As the younger crowd grows-up and enters the business world, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to speculate that the main forms of communication will be replaced (or become the alternative, less-used method) with messaging. Perhaps that shift in communication is coming sooner than later too. Considering that pizza is essentially an American icon, is the fact that Papa John’s Pizza now excepts orders via text messaging a sign that messaging is taking over all other forms of communication? Back in the day, you’d walk in to order your pizza face to face, then came the orders via telephone, then email, and now messaging. Who knows how we’ll be ordering our pizza 10 years from now!

One thing is for sure, and that is that our communication styles vary and definitely change over time. Is it for the better? IDK.

Free Wi-Fi for iPhone Subscribers at Starbucks/Barnes and Noble

This article was written on May 01, 2008 by CyberNet.

We’re not quite sure how many of you out there are iPhone owners, but our guess is that there’s at least a good handful of you who will be able to benefit from free Wi-Fi for your phone. First it started as a rumor but now it has been confirmed that AT&T is now offering iPhone subscribers free Wi-Fi access at Starbucks and Barnes and Noble locations. When you bring your phone in to those locations, a login prompt will appear on your screen, you enter your phone number in, and in no time you’ll be surfing the web on a Wi-Fi network (which we all know is much faster than the Edge network) for free. Nice.

Take a look at the log-in screen that you’ll see (image from Gear Diary):

iphone free wifi.png

I was sitting here thinking to myself, “now wouldn’t it be nice if you could somehow get free Wi-Fi on your laptop using your iPhone?” And then I read the MacRumors article where they explained how you could get the free iPhone WiFi through your laptop. Because AT&T’s system is based upon the iPhone’s User Agent, there’s a quick work-around that can be done. Here are the steps you’ll need to follow:

  1. Open Safari and go to preferences
  2. Click the Advanced tab and check the box that says “show develop menu in menu bar”
    Advanced.png
  3. Go up to the Develop Menu > User Agent > Mobile Safari 1.1.3 – iPhone
  4. Open a new window, enter in your iPhone number and you’ll be good to go!

If you’re using another browser besides Safari, there are extensions and other tools you could use to change the user agent if you really wanted to.

The only disappointing thing out of all of this is that it is limited to only iPhone users. Wouldn’t it be nice if more places offered free Wi-Fi access for all of their customers? Panera is one of those places that has done this for quite a while, and I’m sure they’re able to get some extra business because of it.

Vista Ultimate Signature Edition Available on Amazon

This article was written on January 08, 2007 by CyberNet.

Microsoft is apparently making a Vista Ultimate Signature Edition available for the first 20,000 people looking to pick up a copy of the upgrade version on Amazon. They don’t actually say how many copies they do have on hand, but the image that they made available of the packaging shows that they print your “serial number” on the box, which is out of 20,000. Amazon might not be the exclusive seller of this packaging so the quantities might be truly limited.

So what’s so special about it? Do they engrave your name into the DVD or does the package play the Windows startup sound when you open the case? Nope…It just has Bill Gates’ signature wonderfully printed on the front. If you’re dying to get your hands on this case it will run you an extra $9 totaling $259 for the upgrade version (you must be the owner of Windows XP in order to upgrade). You can still buy the normal upgrade edition for $249.99 from Amazon but then you won’t be able to commemorate this milestone!

So now the real question arises…how long do you think it will be until someone gets their hands on every type of packaging and then tries to sell them on eBay? Not only that, but how much do you think some crazy person would pay just for the packaging (a.k.a. no Windows DVD included)? I think I am almost afraid to find out. ;)
