RIAA May Lose Funding from Record Labels

This article was written on November 30, 2007 by CyberNet.

riaa toilet paper Some of you may not realize it, but record companies (like EMI, Warner, Sony BMG and Universal) pay rather large amounts of money each year to trade groups like the RIAA and the IFPI which funds their operations. In return, these groups support the artists and labels and spend some of their money to help stop piracy. We all know how the RIAA operates and how they’ve been spending big dollars fighting piracy, but the people are fighting back and they’re not coming away with a win every time. Without money from record labels, trade groups would not have the funds to sue.

The RIAA is in business because of the record labels that fund them, so what would happen if these labels started to back out? They may be having to figure this out it other labels follow in the footsteps of EMI. Recently, the British label announced that they were considering cutting the amount of money that they provide trade groups because they’re not too happy with what they’re getting in return for the amount that they pay. Considering the IFPI alone says they get about $132.1 million each year from the big four record labels, EMI’s decision could prove to put groups like the RIAA struggling to make ends meet.

As Pieter points out in the forum, “Is RIAA’s reign of terror finally coming to a halt? Probably not, but EMI is considering to slash funding for the RIAA.” If the RIAA doesn’t have all of the funding that they’re used to, they’re not going to have the money to pay for the lawyers and employees that make the cases against accused music pirates.  I wouldn’t say that they’ll just drop dread, but trade groups could be in for some rough times as record companies reevaluate their spending and find ways to to save money. If they don’t feel that trade companies are doing enough, they may do exactly what EMI is doing and cut back on the amount they give. Could this mean less people brought to court by the RIAA?

Thanks Pieter!

Happy Easter!

This article was written on March 23, 2008 by CyberNet.

To those of you who celebrate Easter, we hope you have a great one! I don’t know about where you live, but where we live, there certainly won’t be an Easter Egg Hunt outside, unless it’s in the snow. We’ve had some crazy weather this year in Chicago as I’m sure some of you have experienced elsewhere. In all this Winter, we received around 80 inches of snow and about 8 inches of that came on Friday. Ryan and I built an Easter snowman since we got dumped on with yet more snow, and here he is. Ryan is about 6 feet tall, so you can see he’s a pretty big snowman, complete with a “Happy Easter” wreath and Easter egg eyes.

Happy Easter! :o )

Best Buy 15% Off Open Box Coupon

This article was written on June 27, 2006 by CyberNet.

Best Buy 15% Off Open Box Coupon

Best Buy is currently offering 15% off of open box desktops, notebooks, monitors and projectors. This discount is in addition to the already discounted prices that they have on the open box merchandise. Just print off the coupon and take it to your local Best Buy.

Before you go and purchase some open box merchandise you need to think about whether the item you are purchasing is worth the discount. Items like the notebook computers are left on for extended periods of time which could effect how long the computer will last. However, the 15% off would probably cover what an extended warranty would cost.

Freeware Games for Download, Plus Some Oldie but Goody Games

This article was written on January 03, 2007 by CyberNet.

Freeware Games 101: Freeware Games means that they are absolutely 100% free for download for an unlimited amount of time. This is very different than Shareware where you have to pay for the games, typically after a trial period.

With that said, www.freewaregames.net is a great site for all of your free downloadable games, any you could possibly think of. Their goal is to bring you the best free games available, and they do a great job of this, dividing games into easy to navigate categories.  Remember, the games do vary in quality, and some may be better than others; But, they’re totally free without any hassles of trial periods.

Some of the more popular games are:

  • F.E.A.R. Combat – We wrote about this big release back in August. It’s the full complete game with 10 multiplayer game modes, 10 multiplayer maps, and 12 different weapons. It’s a first person shooter game complete with all of the updates, official maps, and official game codes.
  • Rakion – This is an action game filled with sword battles, battle planning, and combat. It has a variety of attack components including armor breaking, and guard and catch techniques.
  • Savage – As a commander, you’ll play an in-depth RTS managing the stronghold.  If you’re a Warrior, you’ll play a first person combat game. “As the commander in RTS mode, you will tackle resource management, develop a robust tech tree, plan your assault and lead real human players into battle. As a warrior in action mode, you will master many unique weapons, powerful units, and siege vehicles to fight a fast paced battle. ”
  • War Rock – This is a first person shooting game in which you’ll have the opportunity to purchase access to a variety of gameplay enhancing items and services.  You can also play as-is without purchasing those enhancers.

Besides shooting games (which seem to be the most popular), there are also other games like 3D, Arcade, Board, and Logic. While you’re surfing around Freeware Games.net, you might want to take a peak at their Free Software broken down into categories like business, desktop, education, graphics, etc.

Next, if you’re like me, you’ll love www.game-oldies.com filled with all of the favorite games from Genesis, NES, Gameboy, etc. These games are played right in your browser… like :

If you or someone you  know are a die-hard oldies game fan, point them to www.game-oldies.com – they have just about every game imaginable, for about every game system possible!

Amazon Unbox Video Download Service Goes Live

This article was written on September 07, 2006 by CyberNet.

Amazon Unbox

It was just a few weeks ago that we were talking about Amazon’s digital video service and it looks like they have finally launched it. The service is called Amazon Unbox which isn’t as catchy as it should be. Maybe there is some sort of meaning behind it that I don’t understand?

You can download a TV show for $1.99 but the movies will still cost you between $10 and $20. Come on, I would expect a little more reasonable pricing on the DVD sales considering people can’t burn them!

I guess it may not be bad for your first TV show that you download because they are offering a $1.99 instant rebate on your first purchase. That isn’t much if you buy a DVD but that is a free show.

Is Google Failing to Innovate?

This article was written on March 11, 2008 by CyberNet.

innovation Yesterday we watched as Google Stock hit a new 52 week low of $413.04. It was just on February 8th when they closed below $500 and now they’re coming way too close to that below $400 mark. Luckily for Google, the European Union just approved the buyout of DoubleClick (the U.S. already gave their stamp of approval) and Google stock was headed back up this morning on that news. We looked at some of Google’s competitors and it looks like some of them also had a rough day yesterday, but it got us thinking about Google and if they’re failing to innovate and thus failing to impress investors?

From many angles it looks as though Google is all about innovation. They look for great ideas all over the World and acquire them when found. They give employees about one day a week to develop their own project which screams innovation. And speaking of employees, they’re able to attract some of the best of the best out there. There’s no doubt that they’ve got loads of talent. Up until recently, the effort that they have made to be innovative has helped them push their way over the $700 dollar mark per share. Investors were impressed and jumped on the Google-wagon.

So what has happened over the last few months? There are multiple opinions on this one with some saying that it’s simply the economy while others say that every stock has its ups and downs and this is just one of those down times for Google. One idea to consider though is that Google simply isn’t doing enough new innovation to impress the investors and keep them pumping money into Google.

Recently I stumbled upon a list over at Google titled “Ten things Google has found to be true.” There were two things on the list that really stood out:

  • It’s best do do one thing really, really well (#2)
  • Great just isn’t good enough (#10)

They say that their one thing is search, and it is. They’re great with search, there’s no doubt about that. So then why is it that they’re branching off and trying too many different things that end up being just okay and not great? They also say great just isn’t good enough and that they need to always deliver more than expected. “Through innovation and iteration, Google takes something that works well and improves upon it in unexpected ways.” As of late, they really haven’t delivered more than expected.

Whether Google stock is dropping because of the economy or it’s dropping because investors haven’t seen enough innovation, one thing is for sure and that is that Google stock owners are probably getting a little nervous as this point! And if you don’t own Google stock, hey, now might not be a bad time to buy.

The Matrix For Windows XP

This article was written on August 30, 2006 by CyberNet.

As most of you know I try to post something funny every now and then. I came across this on Google Video and I couldn’t help but laugh. It’s so weird that it is funny in my opinion.

It has all of your favorite people: Neo, Morpheus, and even Bill Gates! Hopefully I’m not the only one that gets a laugh from it. :D

Update:
HA! When I was watching it for my third time I noticed that the falling letters in the beginning actually spell out words. Yeah, I’m a little slow sometimes.

Everything’s Amazing and Nobody’s Happy!

This article was written on March 03, 2009 by CyberNet.

Do you ever stop for a moment to think about how amazing it is that technology has advanced as far as it has? I mean, it wasn’t that long ago that a cell phone was something that only few were able to take advantage of. And let’s not forget the size of the original cell phones! What about laptops? They’ve become more and more affordable and at the same time smaller and more portable, while increasing performance. These days, it would be hard to imagine life without a computer in the home, but also the Wi-Fi Internet that allows us to roam around and access the Internet just about anywhere.

In this day in age, we’ve got GPS systems that help us find our way, cell phones that are practically mini-computers, cameras that instantly capture important moments in our lives, computers that connect us with people around the world, advanced video game systems, and the list goes on and on.

When I stop to think about all of the advances in technology I have witnessed in my lifetime, I can’t help but laugh when I view the video below. Comedian Louis CK appears on the Conan O’Brien show and talks about how “Everything’s Amazing, and Nobody’s Happy.”

Funny stuff, isn’t it? The problem with all of these advances in technology is that we almost expect great stuff all the time and if we don’t get it, we’re disappointed and complain. Other times, we’re surrounded by amazing things, but we don’t stop to appreciate them (e.g., the concept of flying and airplanes).

The next time you sigh because you get a dropped call on your cell phone, or you’re frustrated because there’s another Gmail outage, or (fill in the blank here), stop, take a deep breath, and be thankful that such technology even exists!

The CyberNet Windows Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 Giveaway Winners are…

This article was written on February 04, 2007 by CyberNet.

A big thanks to everybody who entered in the CyberNet Windows Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 Professional Giveaway. There were over 300 entries!

The magic number was… 3,420!

So, how did we come up with such a number? Well, we started with three important numbers before placing them into an equation. The important numbers that we started with were:

  1. 2007 – The year these products were released.
  2. 1985 – The year that Windows 1.0 was released according to Wikipedia.
  3. 26 – The number of different versions of Windows according to Wikipedia.

Some of these numbers could probably be arguable, but this is what we used. Next, we came up with an equation of…

(2007+1985) – [(2007-1985) * 26] = 3,420

Didn’t I tell you not to waste your time trying to figure it out? :)

The Winners are….

  • In first place was entry #280 – ATMB with a number of 3,414.
  • In Second place was entry #15 – RKN with a number of 3,456

We have already sent out an email on Friday to the first place winner asking what their choice would be with no response.  (Note to ATMB, first place winner: if you have not received our email, check your spam folder or send us a message.)

In the event that we do not hear from the first place winner to claim their prize by Wednesday at 12:00 PM central time, the second place winner will be named as the 1st place winner, and a new runner-up will be chosen.

Again, thanks to all who entered, and congratulations to the winners!

About the Downtime…

This article was written on March 13, 2008 by CyberNet.

server down Some of you may have noticed that we were down for about the last hour and a half. No, our server didn’t crash. In fact it still hasn’t been rebooted in 245 days. Without getting into too many details we’ll just say that the hamster fell asleep at the wheel.

Actually our host’s upstream provider was having some complications, and this is the first time that we’ve ever had any troubles like that. As you can tell things are back to normal now, and hopefully it stays that way.

We’re extremely sorry for interrupting your daily flow of nerdy news reading. It’s now safe to put your pocket protector back in your shirt, push your glasses up on your nose, and snort like there’s no tomorrow!
