Stay On Top Of Things With The CyberNet Release Calendar

This article was written on October 25, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNet Release Calendar I have kept myself busy for the past day or so working on a nice release calendar system to display in the sidebar. I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted to do it but after a little research I was able to put together what I think is a nice solution.

The screenshot that is posted here was taken from the sidebar below the Sponsors box. The calendar lists upcoming software and hardware releases in chronological order, which means the most recent will be the first on the list.

Behind the scenes is some JavaScript code that retrieves a public Google Calendar that I made. It doesn’t have a lot of release dates at this point because I was trying to lay the foundation, but over the next few days I hope to get a lot more filled in. Since it is using Google Calendar feel free to subscribe to it using whatever calendar program you would like. Just pick one of the two formats that are available in the sidebar.

At this time you’ll also notice that all of the listings have asterisks around them. Those will appear around any event that was just added within the last 2 days…making it easy for you to pinpoint the release dates that are newly posted. Each title is also hyperlinked and some will be to articles that we write while others will be to the product’s homepage.

We hope everyone enjoys the new calendar and we will probably be putting together some JavaScript code so that anyone can easily put this calendar on their website. Oh yeah, if any release dates pop into your head why don’t you let me know in the comments and I’ll get them added to the calendar! ;)

Update:
There was a small compatibility issue with Firefox 1.5.* so if you are using that browser please hold down the Shift key and click the Refresh button. That will force your browser to download the new JavaScript code.

Reverse hacker comes out on top and wins $4.3 Million

This article was written on February 27, 2007 by CyberNet.

HackerReverse Hacker Shawn Carpenter was recently awarded 4.3 million for wrongful termination. He worked at Sandia National Laboratories as an intrusion detection analyst and ended up fired for a probe that he did over a network security breach.

The breach occurred in 2003, and after discovering the attacks and reporting them to his superiors, he went to the FBI and the U.S. Army because what he discovered was sensitive documents found hidden on a server in South Korea, and information associated with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. He was fired for “inappropriately sharing confidential information.”

Representing Carpenter was Attorney Phillip Davis who says that the recent verdict is “vindication of his decision to do the right thing and turn over the information he obtained to the proper federal authorities in the interests of national security.”

Did he do the right thing? Well, that’s for you to decide. I’d say absolutely.Carpenter says he probably won’t ever see the money, and if he does, it’s coming from taxpayers anyways.

I’ll leave you with a few interesting comments I came across over at Slashdot:

Comment by Short Circuit

What he did was arguably in a gray area…on his own time, he used “hacker techniques” (not my preferred wording, sorry. Read the article.) to track down stolen data on foreign sites. That he turned his results over to the FBI is good, even if it screwed over Sandia.

Comment by crush

On his own admission Carpenter performed the following un-ethical behaviors:

  • Disobeyed orders from his superiors
  • Worked with army intelligence [time.com] in direct contravention of federal rules
  • Cracked other people’s machines in order to obtain information.

Comment by Mysticalfruit

This is what we know.
1. This guy found an intrusion on his network, which because he was their network guy he was being employed to do.
2. He informed his employer that sensitive data was being stolen.
3. His employers did nothing because they’re incompetent nitwits.
4. He, being a good American did what he was supposed to do and tracked down the people who stole the secrets and reported it to the FBI.
5. His bosses, now with egg all over their faces, fired him because he showed they were in fact incompetent nitwits.

Microsoft’s WGA System Phones Home

Microsoft's WGA System Phones Home

The latest update to Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), an anti-piracy program, is calling home to Microscoft every day. This latest update will contact Microsoft regarding the authenticity of your Window’s machine. If it is found to be pirated, they will deny you critical updates. Users that are running a pirated version of Windows will now be notified on their desktop without even having a web brower open.

Microsoft has implemented programs such as this to help reduce the amount of users operating a pirated version of Windows. Those who have unknowingly purchased a pirated version of Windows are eligible for a genuine free copy, just as long as they provide a proof of purchase and turn in their pirated copy.

This latest update has caused some to question whether or not this program should be considered spyware. I’m sure we will be hearing more about this in the future!

Relisir Helps You Keep Up with your Favorite Music

This article was written on April 06, 2010 by CyberNet.

Die-hard music fans are going to love what Relisir has to offer. Relisir is a fairly new start-up that offers users the chance to keep up with their favorite bands whether it’s when they announce a new album is on the way, or if a new album has been released.

What we like about Relisir:

  • It could initially take some time to manually enter all of your favorite artists which would make using this service a bit of a chore. However, if you use Last.fm, you can import your favorite artists which will simplify the whole process. Nice touch.
  • As you type in your favorite artists, a drop down list appears which again, helps speed up the process of getting started with Relisir.
  • Once you add your favorite artists, it’s like you’re on auto-pilate and Relisir goes to work for you, keeping you informed with no additional effort on your end. You don’t even need to return to the website (unless you want to), because all of the important info will be sent to your email inbox.

relisir-1.png

What we don’t like about Relisir:

  • Email is the main method of communication – Relisir relies heavily on email to let you know when your favorite artists have released anything new. Other communication options would be nice – perhaps an iPhone or Facebook app?
  • One one hand, it’s nice that Relisir focuses simply on helping you keep up with your favorite artists. However, it might be nice to see a “music discovery” feature as well. If it knows you like OneRepublic, for example, it could suggest other artists similar to it with new releases and give you the opportunity to listen to it
  • Someone who loves their music probably likes to see these artists live and in concert. It would great if they incorporated a tool to help you track when one of your favorite artists will be performing in your area and provide a link to purchase tickets.

MySpace used to be one of the key ways that music fans kept up with their favorite artists. These artists may still have pages, however, many people have moved away from MySpace and no longer use the service. If you’ve been hanging on to MySpace, simply for the purpose of keeping up with your favorite artists, Relisir might just be what you’re looking for.

Best Buy Gets Sued For Using Pirated Software

Best Buy is being sued by Winternals Software LP for allegedly using their software without the proper number of licenses. The software that is in question is currently used by the Geek Squad and costs $1,200 per license. Best Buy and Winternals were working on a several million dollar deal last year and then in February 2006 Best Buy decided to break off the deal because they were no longer interested. The amount being sued for has not been determined but I would imagine it will be at least a couple million dollars. Sounds like an ‘oops’ to me :) .

New Spam Protection At CyberNet

This article was written on September 19, 2006 by CyberNet.

I thought I would give the non-registered users a heads up about our new Spam filter that is used if you are commenting here at CyberNet.

If you are submitting a comment you will now need to do some simple math before your comment can be posted. I have a spam filter (called Akismet) that catches almost every spam comment but there are two reasons I’ve added this new feature:

  1. Every now and then a spam comment will get through the filter, so this will help make sure that a human is the one posting the comment.
  2. The main reason, however, that I am doing this is because the spam filter stops comments from posting but it will still store them in the database until I delete them. I currently receive between 500 and 1,000 spam comments each day which adds a lot of extra load to the database, not to mention that I normally scroll through them all to make sure no real comments are getting filtered incorrectly. This new system will prevent the comment from being written to the database until they have entered the correct answer.

If you are worried about the math I made sure that you won’t see any numbers great than 10. That way you should still be able to figure out the answer using your fingers and toes… :D

Registered users will not have to worry about this new feature so you can continue to comment as normal.

CyberNet Tour: Advanced Thumbnail Navigation

This article was written on July 14, 2007 by CyberNet.

It’s been a little over a week since we launched the new design of CyberNet, and along with the design came some mentioned new features. We want to make sure that those new features are explained to you so that you can make the most of them. The first feature that we’re going to explain is the Advanced Thumbnail Navigation called Highslide. It does require that you have Javascript enabled in order to use it.

The first thing that you need to know is that if you hover over an image and you see a grey border appear around it, this means that it is a thumbnail. We typically use thumbnails for tutorials or other times when a larger image is necessary.

Process

  1. To start the advanced thumbnail navigation, just click on a thumbnail. The full-sized image will take a second or two to appear.
  2. You’ll notice arrows on the top right of the thumbnail image.  Use these or your keyboard arrows to navigate through all of the thumbnails for an article.
    Highslidedemo
  3. You can click on an image and drag it around anywhere on the screen so that you can view the article at the same time.
  4. Note: Highslide wants to make sure that the image will display in your browser so that you can see the whole thing.  If the image is extra large, it will scale the image to a size that will fit. To view the entire image, just click the “expand” icon in the bottom right corner.
    Highslidedemo2

If you’d like to give it a try, this article will be a good example. It’s our Windows Vista review from back in January. Just click on the first thumbnail and then continue to hit the right arrow, and you’ll get a quick visual tour of Windows Vista while testing out the thumbnail navigation!

We wrestled with the idea of using Lightbox because it’s one of the most popular image previewers on the web. However, after testing out Highslide, we liked it better and thought you would too. If you have any questions, let us know!
