Microsoft Launches Preview of Windows Search 4.0

This article was written on March 28, 2008 by CyberNet.

windows search The searching capabilities in Vista are one of its best features and one of the most useful, and now it’s about to get even better. Just yesterday Microsoft launched the first preview of Windows Search 4.0. It is the successor to the Windows Search Platform which means it replaces Instant Search on Vista and Windows Desktop Search 3.0 on XP. In a nutshell, this preview is an update to the Windows Search indexer. In addition, they squashed some bugs and made improvements to performance, reliability, and recoverability features.

For Vista users, they can expect the following improvements (note that Windows Search 4.0 is an extension to the built-in searching capabilities in Vista):

  • 33% faster query response time
  • Remote Index Discovery has been extended for PC-to-PC Search which means finding information shared on a remote PC is easy
  • Rollback Recovery has been implemented (meaning the search index will “roll back” to the last known good state in the event of an error)

For XP users, they can expect the following (note that Windows Search 4.0 is an extension to Windows Desktop Search for XP):

  • XP users have the ability to search remote indexes for network shares
  • Ability to host Vista-style preview handlers in the preview pane (when you’re doing a search, you can click on a file and see a preview in the preview pane)
  • Faster previewer updates for XP

According to information on Microsoft’s website regarding Windows Search 4.0 for XP users, “The WS4 installation process automatically upgrades Windows Desktop Search 2.6 or later versions of Windows Search Technologies.” If you have an earlier version (prior to 2.6) installed, you’ll have to remove the application first before installing Windows Search 4.0.

Searching in both Vista, XP, and Windows Server 2003 has just gotten even better, thanks to Windows Search 4.0. If you’d like to download it, click here for the download links.

Make Cool Logos For Yourself

This article was written on September 24, 2006 by CyberNet.

Logo54.com has a small, but cool, selection of logos that you can choose to make for yourself. All you have to do is type in the text that you want to appear in the logo and they will generate it for you. Here are the examples that I did:

It was actually fun to generate those and just for kicks I thought I should do the following two logos:

Yahoo Google
Nintendo Xbox

Okay, I guess that was my amusement for today. ;)

LiveStation Does Not Belong to Microsoft

This article was written on July 06, 2007 by CyberNet.

Livestation

Many sites are incorrectly reporting that Microsoft is developing LiveStation, while other sites just aren’t making it clear that Microsoft only has a very small stake in the company that is developing it, and they’re not really involved in the development process.

LiveStation is a peer-to-peer live TV broadcasting application being developed by Skinkers, based in London. The Inquirer interviewed Skinkers co-founder Metteo Berlucchi today who explained that the rumor that this was a Microsoft project started after he gave a video interview to Steve Clayton over at Microsoft. It’s not that Skinkers has no connection with Microsoft, because they do, but it’s very little.

Berlucchi explains that Skinker bought the rights to a Microsoft Research project and in exchange for those rights, Microsoft got a 10 percent stake. That’s the only connection there, and all of the development for LiveStation has been done by Skinkers developers.

It’s understandable how some assumed that Microsoft had a major influence in the project because afterall, it is named LiveStation. Microsoft has their whole line of “live”services, so this sounds like it would fit right in, but it doesn’t.

Joost Killer

Another element to this whole rumor is that LiveStation is a Joost Killer. Berlucchi addressed this issue and actually thought the Joost Killer statement was pretty funny. He says:

“There’s been a lot of confusion with people making two plus two equal 10,” he said. “People call it a Joost killer, which is hilarious because the real title is ‘trying to get television working over the Internet. Microsoft would never do something like launching against Joost. They probably don’t know what Joost is.”

To recap:

LiveStation is being developed by Microsoft = False!

LiveStation is a Joost Killer = False!

Miss South Carolina to thank for MapsforUs.org

This article was written on August 31, 2007 by CyberNet.

By now I’m sure most of you have seen or heard of the Miss Teen contestant from South Carolina who recently became a YouTube star… but unfortunately for not the most flattering reasons. During the question portion of the competition, she was asked:

Recent polls have shown that a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a World map. Why do you think this is?

She answered with:

I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don’t have maps, and I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and The Iraq and everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. or should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so that we will be able to build up our future.

Her answer was, well, it didn’t make any sense. While her answer was all over the place, she did mention that “U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don’t have maps.” That statement alone was enough of an invitation for someone to start a new blog called MapsforUs.org.

Mapsforus2

The blog was started as a joke to make fun of the situation, and it’s actually pretty funny. People are able to “donate maps” to the citizens of the United Stats, and right now there are a handful of random maps on there like…

You too can contribute to the site. :) They say:

“The children of the US America are in deep trouble. Because some people out there don’t have maps. Such as South Africa. Therefore, you must email us maps to make it better. EMAIL: maps AT mapsforus.org”

And just in case you haven’t seen the video, take a look:

It’s actually amazing how many different maps are out there, isn’t it? If by chance you’re wanting a map to study, check out www.mapsforus.org. :)

Google Calendar Gaining Big Ground

This article was written on January 04, 2007 by CyberNet.

Google Calendar has been around for not even a year, but it’s gaining some big ground in the online calendar world. In fact, according to Hitwise, Google’s Calendar has surpassed the MSN Calendar, and now it’s headed with its’ sight set beyond Yahoo. Within the next several months, at the rate Google is going, I don’t think that they will have a problem surpassing Yahoo Calendar. Yes, I think 2007 is the year for the Google Calendar.

Check out these statistics analyzed and put together by Hitwise:

  • In 6 months from June 2006-December 2006, visits to Google Calendar increased by 333%
  • The week ending 12/30/06 – 88% of upstream traffic to MSN Calendar came directly from Hotmail.
  • During that same week, Yahoo Calendar received 48% of upstream traffic from Yahoo! Mail or other Yahoo Services
  • Google received 19% of upstream traffic from Gmail for the same week ending 12/30/06 (42% came from Google search)

The graph above gives a good visual of the rate the Google Calendar is going. So, what does this all mean? For Google, this is great news.  This means that they are not relying on traffic directly from their mail source to get Calendar users.  In fact, their third largest source of traffic was Yahoo! Mail with 2.7% of upstream visits, and their 6th largest source was Hotmail with 1.2% of upstream visits. People are checking their mail, whether it’s Yahoo or Hotmail, and then leaving to go check their Google Calendar!

I’ve used Google Calendar right from the start, and I don’t think I’d be able to switch to any other service. It’s easy to use, and with the sharing capabilities, it sucked me right in. I don’t believe Yahoo Calendar will be able to stand king of the hill much longer, with Google quickly approaching.

Happy Turkey Day!

This article was written on November 27, 2008 by CyberNet.

happy turkey day.jpgThe holiday season is upon us again, and here in the United States we’re celebrating Thanksgiving today (also known as Turkey Day). Today Ashley and I will be getting our tummies filled with two different feasts that we will be attending, and then tomorrow we will be heading for downtown Chicago where we can observe the shopping madness. We normally don’t buy much on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving), but we always like to be out and about at the center of all the craziness.

Do you have anything special planned for the holiday weekend? We’re going to try and minimize our time outside since it is around 30 degrees Fahrenheit (-1 degrees Celsius) here around Chicago. It’s times like these that I wish we lived in Florida or California.

Ashley and I wish you and yours a very happy holiday. Try not to eat so much that you have to loosen your belt at the table. ;)
