Buyer Beware Of New Computer Warranties

This article was written on December 26, 2005 by CyberNet.

When you see those cheap computers being advertised by Dell and Gateway, and you think “geeze, at that price I should buy that computer”, you might want to read the fine print. Dell and Gateway are starting to reduce the length of their warranties from the standard 1-year down to 90-days! Of course, the 1-year warranty is still available for you to buy but at an additional cost! I recently purchased a Dell desktop computer and it came with the standard 1-year warranty even though I was thinking I should get a longer one since I upgraded to the 24″ Flat Panel monitor. Well later on after my purchase I received a letter in the mail saying that I could upgrade to the 4-year warranty at a fraction of the cost (about 75% off after the mail in rebate). So I would recommend getting the 1-year warranty and holding out for a cheaper upgrade on the warranty if you are interested in it.

Skype’s Popularity Results In Skype “Accessories”

This article was written on September 28, 2006 by CyberNet.

The number of people who use Internet calling services such as Skype are increasing, and along with it, the accessories are too.  For example,  Logitech now has an “Easy Call Desktop” cordless keyboard and mouse option which was designed for those who use the Internet to place phone calls.  The EasyCall Desktop makes it just a bit easier to use services such as Skype because it has an integrated speakerphone, and a headset included to give the convenient hands-free conversation.

The Logitech version will cost around $129.99 and has all of the standard features including the programmable hot buttons.  Along with supporting Skype, it also supports AIM and Yahoo Messenger services with voice (it appears they’re working on the Windows Live Messenger support).

Even Skype has a section on their website dedicated to purchasing products to enhance Skype such as phones, headphones, even a mobile wi-fi phone that would work on any wi-fi network (this product not available yet, only pre-order).

Skype is certainly changing the way that people communicate over the Internet.  You can bet we’ll continue to see the accessories designed to cater to the  online communication business.

Microsoft's Mac 'Secret' -- It Is Pretty Amazing

Is it possible that Microsoft has an insane amount of Macs? It sure is, and they have them all in their Mac lab. The screenshot that you see above is shelves upon shelves of 150 Mac Mini’s! They have all of them hooked up to a 30″ monitor and can switch between them using Apple’s Remote Desktop features. If this is their Mac lab, I wonder what their main Windows lab is like?

Windows Vista Is Today’s Buzz Word

This article was written on May 24, 2006 by CyberNet.

Windows Vista Is Today's Buzz Word

With Windows Vista Beta 2 just being released yesterday the buzz word on the Web is Vista! Instead of writing a bunch of separate articles I thought I would talk about the hot topics right here.

First: Will Vista Be Unhackable?
I know, inside you kinda chuckled when you read that title but Microsoft has gotten a little wiser since XP as Bink.nu reports. I hadn’t thought about it before but since the Ultimate Edition of Vista is the “best” then that would make other editions like Vista Enterprise “worse”. The Ultimate Edition will not have the Volume Licensing keys like the Enterprise does, which means that the version of Vista that the pirates want (the Ultimate Edition) will require activation.

Microsoft must think that is a big deal or something? There are a ton of cracks out there to get around activating Windows XP, Server 2003, etc… and Vista won’t be an exception. It is like Microsoft is challenging the hackers to find a way to break into Vista.

Second: New Windows Vista Help/Support Site
For all of those people tinkering with Vista, then this is for you. There is a new Help and Support Site for Vista which may help you in your time of need. If you are having troubles then this should probably be the first place that you head to.

Third: Can Vista Get ReadyBoost In Time?
ReadyBoost sounds like a nifty feature that would be especially handy for those less tech savvy. ReadyBoost will allow users to use their USB drives or a networked computer as a source for memory. This may mean that people will have to perform internal upgrades less often and may be able to just slap a USB drive onto the back of their computer to upgrade their memory.

However, it looks like the ReadyBoost feature may not make the Vista release in time according to Microsoft Watch. Speaking of “in time”, let’s move on to my next topic.

Fourth: Vista Delayed…Again?
It may be possible that Vista will get delayed yet again. PC World reported on Tuesday that Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer expected Vista to get delayed again. What a bummer, but maybe there is still hope for an on time arrival. That same day Jim Allchin, the executive responsible of bringing Vista to market, said that Microsoft is confident that they can meet the January launch date of Vista. So who do you believe? I think I will lean towards another delay, after all, what is a few more weeks after a few years of delays?

CyberNotes: KlipFolio – Turn Your Desktop Into A Virtual News Center

This article was written on October 13, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Free For All Friday

How would you like to turn your desktop into a virtual, non-cluttered news center?  Just keeping up with the latest news or email on a daily basis can be quite the challenge.  This is where KlipFolio comes in.  KlipFolio is a personalized dashboard, a collection of “Klips” that are chosen and completely customizable by you, the user with a built-in alert feature.  It is also developer-friendly, so if there’s a Klip you’re wanting that’s not available, you can create it yourself! The development tools are built right in.

These Klips are mini programs that keep you up to date with just about everything imaginable from weather and news to email and RSS feeds.  They have a huge list of Klips that are already available as well as a list of some of the more popular ones like Yahoo! Mail, and Google Calendar. Some of the other popular Klips include weather, stock, news, auctions(eBay), and package tracking (FedEx and UPS). Customizing Klips is one of the features I like most.  You can move and resize Klips freely, as well as minimize them.  When you minimize a Klip, they will automatically expand when you get near them so that you can see the content.

It certainly wouldn’t be complete without RSS feed capabilities.  To add a feed, simply click on the “add feed” button in the toolbar.  A new feed viewer Klip will appear.  From there you can add as many feeds as you’d like to each feed Klip that you create.  For example, if you have 5 sites that are all related to software — you could create a “software Klip” so that you have your software related feeds in one window.  You could also create them for politics, science, etc.  the possibilities are endless, and it’s a really nice way to categorize your information. If you right click on the title bar of a feed, you can choose to dismiss the items which is equivalent to marking the items are read, something I always look for.

Additional features that I enjoy are preferences and alerts.  Of course with the preferences, there’s a variety of colors and fonts you can choose from.  They also have a selection of skins to change the look of your Klips.  There’s lots of different settings to choose from to customize it so it will look just like you want it to. There is also a built in alert feature.  You can get alerts to pop up whenever new items are added, whenever an item changes, or when a certain word appears.  For example, you could receive an alert anytime that CyberNet writes about Firefox.  You’d go into the Klip setup, select the alerts tab, and then you can add certain keywords you want to be notified of.

The interface is small, and looks nice on your desktop without slowing down your system, and it’s an easy download from Serence Inc. It is offered in several different languages, and is pretty user friendly. If you’d like to download KlipFolio, visit KlipFolio.com.

Microsoft Cheats Free USB Drive Customers

For those people who signed up for the free USB drive from Microsoft you might want to check your email. They sent an email stating that they are not able to ship the USB drive to you and give you a download link to the information that was supposed to be on the drive:

Thank you for your interest in the Mystery Solved Windows licensing promotion. We’ve received your request for more information to help clarify Microsoft Windows Desktop Licensing pre-loaded on the USB drive. Unfortunately, this Mystery Solved promotion was available in the U.S. only and while supplies last. Supply is depleted at this time, so we encourage you to please utilize the online alternative today.

Simply download* the Windows Desktop Licensing reference files directly at:

www.microsoft.com/mysterysolved/corp

To help simplify Windows Desktop Licensing, keep these points in mind:

There are two legal ways to acquire a full Windows Desktop license: through your hardware vendor (OEM/System Builder) or Full Packaged Product.
Volume licensing covers Windows Desktop operating system upgrades only.
OEM operating system licenses live and die with each PC they are not transferable.

Again, thank you for your interest in Mystery Solved and for helping us spread the word about proper Windows licensing.

Sincerely,
Microsoft Corporation

I can’t say that I was really expecting it since I tried to get it about 3 months ago, but it does provide a bad image for them.

What’s Your Time Online Spent Doing?

This article was written on August 15, 2007 by CyberNet.

ComputertimeAs the title of this article asks, what’s your time online spent doing? Do you spend more time viewing news and other content than you do emailing and shopping? Do you play games? What is it that you do?

A recent study conducted by Nielsen/NetRatings found that people are now spending a good chunk of their time online reading and viewing content like news (thanks to the increase in blogs and other news services) and videos (thanks to sites like YouTube). In fact, over four years, the amount of time spent with content increased 37%! The study found that the “abundance of content and faster online speeds accounted for the spike.

Other interesting findings from the study:

  • Time spent on e-commerce dropped fell 5% (bad news for sites like Amazon)
  • Time spent on communication like email fell 28%

One of the reasons that time spent communicating via email fell is because of the popularity of instant messaging. And then there’s the Social Network factor which affects both communication and content viewing. Many of you probably just use Facebook for casual communication by leaving a message on your friend’s Wall, or leaving a comment on MySpace. And then factor in the time spent by all the people who view content on Social Networks, and the findings of this study are really common sense.

Most of my time online is spent reading blogs, visiting search engines to search for information, and I check in at least once a day to Facebook and MySpace. What’s your time spent doing?

Viewing Earth from Space … Almost

This article was written on August 24, 2007 by CyberNet.

Ever wondered what the Earth looks like from 117,597 feet above the ground? Yeah, me neither. But the photos you’re going to see here gives you a glimpse of what the Earth looks like from more than 22.27 miles away and it’s pretty awesome. Especially knowing the pictures were taken from a helium balloon which was launched on August 11, 2007 by some guys in Alberta, Canada.

Sable 3 - 1  Sable 3 - 2 Sable 3-4

It’s hard to believe that these guys attached a Nikon Coolpix P2 digital camera (with a parachute attached) to the helium balloon, but they did. Along with the balloon was a Byonics Micro Trak 300 APRS tracking device so that the guys on the ground could track where the camera was going to land. Each minute, the camera snapped a photo and two and a half hours later, the balloon popped. The parachute opened, and down came the camera with all of the great pictures!

Sable 3

This wasn’t the first time that this team of guys tried to launch a helium balloon high above the Earth. On two previous dates in 2006, they tried the same thing but weren’t successful. The third time is definitely the charm in this situation. It’s amazing how far away the clouds look – it almost looks like they’re as far away as what they’d be standing on the ground looking up.

They’ve got a site put together with a lot of great pictures which you can find here. It appears as though the site is having issues right now, so I’ve taken a screenshot of it which you can view here.

Pretty neat, isn’t it?
