Ringles = Singles and Ringtones all in One

This article was written on September 10, 2007 by CyberNet.

We’ve already heard over and over again that sales of CD’s are down, way down. People are turning to online services like iTunes to get their music and therefore have no reason to go out and purchase entire CD’s from retailers. The recording industry isn’t willing to let CD sales slip away quite yet though, so they’ve come up with a new way that they hope will help. Coming this Fall, users will be able to purchase Ringles (not Pringles) which will be a combination of singles from an artist, and a ringtone.

The term Ringles was approved by none other than the RIAA who also designed a logo to help "brand" it. As mentioned, a Ringle will include three songs.  One will be an original version of a song, the second will be a remix, and the third will be an older song from the artist. Additionally, a ringtone from the artist will be included. Thus far, Sony BMG (who developed the concept) and Universal Music Group are the only ones that will be making the  Ringles.

ringles

While it may not sound like a terrible idea, I’m doubtful that it will be successful.  First of all, each Ringle will cost anywhere from $5.98 to $6.98 which hardly seems worth it for three songs and a ringtone. I think consumers will quickly label Ringles a rip-off. Secondly, the music industry tried the whole "single" concept before and it didn’t really take-off. I don’t think adding a ringtone is going to make singles that much more appealing.

According to PC Magazine, we can expect to see these Ringles at some point in stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, and Amazon. Anyone interested?

Apple in Talks to Acquire Intel

This article was written on April 01, 2010 by CyberNet.

apple core i7.pngSeveral sources are reporting this morning that Apple is in discussions with Intel to acquire the chip manufacturer for upwards of $12 billion. Over the last 22 years Apple has acquired 25 different companies, but this single transaction will likely beat the sum of all the others combined.

This is a rather interesting move after Apple purchased microprocessor design company PA Semi just a few years ago for $278 million, and then went on to design a custom processor for the iPad. With Intel onboard we could begin seeing some serious computing power in the next generation iPhone that is expected to come out this summer… after all Intel did make a custom low-power processor for Apple that was then used in the MacBook Air.

The sources are also saying that Apple has been in talks with Intel since the middle of last year, and coincidentally place the talks around the time the Nehalem architecture processors were announced. There is some thought that Intel named those processors – Core i3, i5, and i7 – inline with Apple’s “i” naming convention as a precursor to the acquisition.

Intel has really been honing in on the mobile market with their Atom processor, which has found its way onto netbooks across the globe. One thing is for sure… ARM could be seeing some stiff competition if Intel processors are used in the iPad, iPhone, and iPods. If you look hard enough you’ll see that almost any mobile phone made in the last 5 years has some form of an ARM processor in it, but with Apple’s mobile-driven ambitions we could see Intel pushing for that praise-worthy crown.

We will be keeping an eye on the news outlets and letting you know as updates become available. Most sources say an official announcement will likely be made by the end of today, April 1st.

What We’ve Been Up To…

This article was written on October 15, 2008 by CyberNet.

Hi guys (and gals!)! We’ve been getting emails over the last month or so asking what we’ve been up to since we cut back our writing schedule. Now that life has calmed down (a little), we thought we’d share just what it is that’s filling our time these days.

Before we get into that, we wanted to thank you for your patience and understanding with our recent transition. As always, we appreciate your support, and your readership! Thank you for taking the time to read and comment, and send in tips, they are always appreciated!

Aside from mourning over the Cubs losing, here’s what we’ve been up to. At the end of August, Ryan accepted a position as a “Deployment Specialist” with a Chicago-based company. The organization is located in the “Chicago Loop” (for those of you unfamiliar, it’s just the name for the business district in the City). This meant we either had to move closer to the city to reduce commute time, or relocate to the city. We’re not really city dwellers so we packed up and moved about an hour Southeast of where we were living to a Western suburb of Chicago. Ryan takes the train into the city everyday and is enjoying his job of managing and deploying websites.

chicago loop.png

As for myself, I accepted a position as a Teacher/Technology Integration Specialist at an elementary school in the area. I teach 5th grade math, kindergarten-4th grade computer classes, and I manage the school website and help teachers integrate technology into their classrooms. So far I am loving the job because it combines two things I am passionate about, teaching and technology.

We do have to say that it has been quite the adjustment to take a few steps back from CyberNet, and we do miss it! We haven’t had nearly as much interaction with our readers lately which is one of the things we enjoy most. To help with the interaction, we’ve got a question for you. Even if you’ve never commented before, feel free to answer!

Reader Question…

Now we’d like to turn and ask you guys what you’ve been up to! In the past, we haven’t really asked what you do during the day, so feel free to let us know what profession you’re in and even the name of the company, if you’d like! If you’re a student, tell us what you are studying and where.

Nice Laptop At Walmart For $398 Starting November 5

This article was written on October 29, 2006 by CyberNet.

Another holiday season is approaching us and there is nothing like the mobs of people that go shopping on the day after Thanksgiving. That day is typically referred to Black Friday and it earned its name because that is the one day where most retail stores are guaranteed not to be in the red (a.k.a. guaranteed to make money).

Everyone wants to know what the deals are going to be like before hand so that they can scope out and plan their attack shopping…that is why a site called BFAds.net exists. People send in scanned images of advertisements for the sales that will occur after Thanksgiving. At this point they don’t really have much but in the next two weeks I’m sure they will get a lot of submissions!

Walmart Laptop Well, the big deal last year was the $378 laptop that Walmart offered which didn’t have any really amazing specs (which is obvious for the price). This year, however, they will be offering a $398 laptop starting on November 5 and going until November 11. So this isn’t a Black Friday sale but is amazing enough to be one. Here is a list of the specs for Compaq Presario V5305WM laptop:

  • 2.00 GHz Mobile AMD Sempron™ Processor 3300+
  • 512MB 333MHz DDR (upgradable to 2GB)
  • ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M IGP (128MB)
  • 60GB 5400RPM Hard-Drive
  • 24X DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
  • 15.4” WXGA High-Definition BrightView Widescreen (1280 x 800) Display
  • Integrated 56k modem, 100mb Network Card and 54g 802.11b/g Wireless Connectivity
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (Not PCMCIA)
  • 10.2″(L) x 14.1″(W) x 1.38″(min H) /1.77″(max H)
  • 6.4 lbs

There is a limit of 1 per customer and each store has to have at least 15 in stock…and once employees get their hands on them I’m sure there will be at least 2 left. :)

So it looks like some of the fun may be starting a little early this year. If you’re scouting out good deals then you should subscribe to the RSS or email list that BFAds.net has. Also, as some of the sweet electronic deals emerge I’ll probably let everyone know here.

Bottled Google Water Being Sold On eBay

With all the weird things that are getting sold on eBay, it is no surprise that this is as well. This Google bottled water is a trademark infringement because Google has not approved it. It was found in Iraq by a Marine. He is donating 75% of the sale price to charity so at least some of it is going to a good cause, but I am wondering if the auction will complete or if Google will make eBay pull it for trademark infringement.

Verizon Turned it’s Nose up at the iPhone

This article was written on February 01, 2007 by CyberNet.

It’s been about a month since Apple unveiled the iPhone to an audience who generally responded with ooo’s and aaah’s. I’m sure everybody knows by now about Apple’s exclusive deal with Cingular to be the sole provider in the United States for iPhone service. They have five years to the iPhone, all to themselves. But, was Cingular the back-up plan?  According to USA Today, Verizon was actually offered the deal first. This happened over two years ago! Verizon declined the opportunity saying that they had nothing bad to say about Apple and the iPhone, just that they couldn’t come to a deal that was beneficial on both ends.

Here are a few reasons why Verizon may have said ‘no thanks’

  • Apple wanted sole control over customer service issues with the iPhone
  • Apple also wanted a portion of monthly fees
  • iPhones would have been limited to sell only in Verizon and Apple stores- no distribution partners like Wal-Mart of Best Buy would be able to sell them.

So far there has been no word on all of the details on the Cingular deal, other than the 5 year exclusivity. Both Apple and Cingular have talked up the great relationship that they have with each other, so they must have agreed somewhere along the line. Additionally, they haven’t disclosed the financial terms of the agreement with Apple.  I’d be really curious to know how much they paid to have exclusive rights to the iPhone for 5 years! That takes us all the way until 2012 when there will probably be plenty of other “copy-cat” iPhone-ish options available.

Apple says: No More MySpace

This article was written on May 25, 2007 by CyberNet.

ApplestoreIf you’ve been into an Apple store lately, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.  A few weeks ago I was in an Apple store, and I couldn’t help but notice I was in the minority. You’d think the Apple store would be filled with adults looking to purchase their next computer, or checking out an iPod. Instead I found myself surrounded by a plethora of teenagers who snatched up every open computer as they became available.

The reason? Free Internet! Apple Stores up until yesterday didn’t have any restrictions on Internet use. Teenagers have been piling into the stores to take advantage of it, and one site in particular, MySpace (no surprise here).

While I was there, it felt as though I was in an Internet Cafe, not a retail store.  This problem has been resolved though because most Apple Stores implemented a new block that will keep users from accessing MySpace.  This should help keep people flowing in and out at a faster pace compared to the time that some stayed there surfing the Internet for who knows how long.

I’m curious what the Apple store will be like the next time I decide to venture into one. Hopefully there will be a few more computers opened up, and the feel of an Apple retail store instead of a bustling Internet cafe.

TiVo and Verizon Join to Offer TiVo Mobile Scheduling

This article was written on March 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

Tivo VerizonEarlier this week, TiVo and Verizon joined together to announce TiVo Mobile Scheduling which will allow users to remotely record shows by using their Verizon mobile phone. This means that when you’re miles from home and you realize your favorite show isn’t scheduled to record, you can easily schedule that recording while on the go by searching through the TV listings right from your phone.

While this would be a nice extra free incentive to offer customers and to draw in potential customers, there will be a $1.99 fee charged per month to get your access. Also important to note is that it will be available only to those who have a Series 2 or Series 3 TiVo box, and the Verizon phone would need to be enabled with Wireless Get It Now.

This is the second time in the last two months that TiVo has joined together with another company to offer something extra for their customers.  Early in February, TiVo and Amazon joined together to offer TiVo customers video downloads right to their box.

Going back to the Verizon and TiVo deal, so far around the web it appears that most people aren’t too impressed because if you have a computer with Internet access, you can do the same thing for free. A writer over at TiVo Lovers says, “Honestly, this doesn’t impress me.  One carrier, and a limited number of phones at that – and a fee.”

It probably would have been a good idea to try and get other wireless providers in on this as well.  They’re targeting only a portion of the wireless market, and for those reasons, it doesn’t seem that offering this service would be worth it.
