Get your Firefox Calendar for 2007

This article was written on January 03, 2007 by CyberNet.

Firefox seems to be doing a lot lately to promote themselves, and why not? From commercials and wallpapers, stickers and t-shirts, Firefox promotion is in full swing. The latest promotion is their Multipage Firefox 2007 Calendar with three different formats. The first is used for months January – April, and features the Firefox crop circle (a project from the Linux User Group at Oregon State University).  The second picture is used for months May-August and comes from their recent commercial competition.  It’s titled “This is hot!” The third picture is for months September-December and is the classic Firefox logo. All three are pictured below.

Another way to spread the Fox is with their year-long calendars that you could hang up at your office, classroom, etc.  There are two different versions of those; ‘dark’ and ‘fire.’ All you have to do is download, and print, and you’re ready to go. Those too are pictured below.

Finally, there are lots of different Firefox wallpapers out there that you can use. We’ve written about several different options — links are below! Enjoy :)

Photovisi: Standout Photo Collage Creating Service

This article was written on April 09, 2010 by CyberNet.

Sharing content, particularly photos, has exploded in popularity over the last decade. It’s easy, it’s fun, and as a result, many websites offer services that help you create photo collages. One standout in this area is called Photovisi.

We like Photovisi for several reasons; ease of use, it looks good (nice templates), it’s free, and it’s available as a Facebook app in addition to the Photovisi website. We’ve tested out both methods (Facebook, and their website) for creating collages, and both prove to be outstanding.

There are basically three steps involved in the creation process – first you choose a template (shown below are some examples), add your photos (you browse for photos already saved on your computer), crop photos if you’d like, and then you can save, download, and or print your collage. As you are creating your collage, you can select a background color or choose an image to be displayed as your background.

When you’re ready to save your collage, choose the resolution you’d like for your download – 800×600, 1024×768, or 1600×1200. Additionally, Photovisi has partnered with Zazzle so that you can print your collage as magnets, postcards, mugs and more.

If you’re using the Facebook app, you choose an album of photos you’ve already uploaded to Facebook to work with. When you save your collage to Facebook, you can post it to your profile and save it to an album. Below is an actual collage that I created using photos from an album I had already uploaded to Facebook.

Photovisi2.png

You’ll see one ad at the top of the page (I saw ads for Google’s Picasa and Intuit), but good services have to make money somehow, and it’s really the only ad you’ll come across, so it’s not bad.

One feature we would like to see would be integration with online photo services. Instead of browsing for photos on the computer, it would be great to be able to access collections from sites like Flickr, Smug Mug, etc. Other than that, we’re impressed with Photovisi. It produces great results for the amount of effort required to create a collage and will be fun to share with family and friends.

CyberNotes: Nokia’s Luxery Brand Vertu, The Lexus Of Cell Phones

This article was written on August 21, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Million Dollar Monday

If you don’t consider yourself an “average Joe” rather you consider yourself living the life of luxery, Nokia’s luxery brand of phones called Vertu will be the perfect “communication instrument” (the average joe calls it “cell phone”) for you. From sapphires and crystal to rubys and diamonds, this phone is nothing but average. To top it off, it’s made piece by piece entirely by hand.
Vertu Luxery Cell Phone

I went to their website to get the details and I was impressed.  They offer a variety of styles and colors to satisfy all of your needs. There are white and yellow gold options available with diamonds. Yes, diamonds on a cell phone. Vertu also offers an array of colors like red, blue, yellow, and the list goes on. For comparisons, Nokia will sell millions of phones in a years time while Vertu will sell only thousands. It’s a completely different ball game and quite the different consumer Vertu aims their product at.

How would you like a keypad made with ruby bearings? Along with the ruby keypad bearings, Vertu phones also have silicone moldings under the leather on each corner that protects the phone from wear and tear. The phones also have a strong sapphire crystal and titanium surface that gives the phone some extra protection.

A phone such as this will cost at the least, several thousand dollars (and the demand is on the rise).  For such a high cost, I’d expect it to last for more than the 2.5 to 4 hours of talk time that it currently has. While there’s not a whole lot of talk time, it does have an estimated 270 hours of standby time.  It also has a fairly large user memory capable of storing around 1000 entries.

According to LuxuryLaunches.com, Vertu is expected to release another phone within the next month which is expected to sell well. You can find retailers of the Vertu phones all over the world in the United States, Canada, UK, France, and some countries in Asia.

AOL’s Search Data Has Eerie Content

AOL's Search Data Has Eerie Content

AOL released a list of 20 million search queries yesterday that was made up from 500,000 users. You didn’t need special permission to download the file but you had to be willing to wait for the 439MB to finish downloading. In the end it didn’t take long for them to remove it from their servers but by that time it was already a little too late.

TechCrunch has already reported about a mirror that is still up where you can download the file. If that ever goes down then the P2P networks will always be available since the torrent is already wandering around the Web.

The Paradigm Shift noticed one user in particular, with the ID number 17556639, that was constantly doing searches like “how to kill your wife.” That user appeared to be looking for anything they could find like decapitation and car crash photos. If that is just one user, it makes you wonder what you’ll find going through the other 499,999 that are in the list!

The biggest reason why this was stupid, in my opinion, is that no one will trust them anymore. They just released information regarding a free 5GB file storage account that users will be able to sign up for in September but who would do that when your data could possibly be given to the public. I’ll be holding out for Google who has proven that they fight for my privacy.

25% Of Dell Servers Run Linux

25% Of Dell Servers Run Linux

Windows has been the primary Operating System on Dell servers for quite some time, but it looks like Linux is catching up. Dell stated that 25% of their servers in enterprises run Red Hat Linux.

Those are actually impressive numbers and they say that the number of Linux servers will continue to grow. Right now the primary purchasers of Linux servers are those making the transition from Linux because changing from Unix to Windows would be quite a big step.

An equally impressive statistic is that Dell can handle 90 percent of service calls regarding Red Hat without having to contact Red Hat Support to solve the issue. Heck, I don’t even think Dell can handle 90 percent of Windows issues :D .

How to Connect with CyberNet Technology News!

This article was written on July 08, 2007 by CyberNet.

ConnectedWant to stay connected with the latest technology news? We’ve experienced a lot of growth over the last year, and we thought that now was a perfect time to explain to our new and old readers alike, how to stay connected and get involved with CyberNet News. Hopefully this list will prove useful and you’ll find the method(s) that work best for you.

RSS

Stay connected to CyberNet via RSS which stands for “Really Simple Syndication.” Using RSS, you can keep up with the daily news in a more automated fashion.

There are a handful of different RSS Readers that you can use, with one of the most popular being Google Reader. Other popular readers are Bloglines, and NewsGator. And then there are personalized home pages like Netvibes and iGoogle that work as well. Any RSS reader will do, just find one that you like.

RsslogoTo subscribe to the CyberNet feed, just click the orange RSS icon in the address bar, or click here and select your favorite service.

Email

Maybe RSS just isn’t your thing? You can subscribe via email and receive a daily morning email. Just enter your email address in the email field in the sidebar.

Forum

One of the best ways to get involved here is in the forum! There you’ll find a sampling of just about any topic possible, although movies seems to be a hot topic there lately. There’s a group of “regulars” who hang out there, along with Ryan and I. There’s also the occasional visitor who stops by to ask a question. Feel free to join right in on the conversations! Sometimes it’s nice to step away from the tech talk, and discuss other things, although you’ll still find plenty of tech related topics there.

In a recent discussion, some of the members talked about why they like the CyberNet Forum. Here are some of their responses:

Al Hutchison: “This forum is unique in that it provides a place for us to seek help, share experiences, and just have fun on a wide variety of topics.  They support the Golden Rule that there is no such thing as a stupid question (even though I think it is for me asking) and the folks here provide an honest and helpful answer.”

Chris Rossini: In the CyberNet forum, we’ve got a bunch of people who consistently show respect for one another. We talk about everything related to tech…and every once in awhile we get off topic…but it’s all good. The forum consists of a great group of people, and I look forward to everyone’s opinion each day.

XPGeek: I never feel judged or pressured about anything, and I like all the people here. We’re like this little band of geeks, but we’re all different and we all have our areas of expertise if you will. Like one of us could recite Ubuntu  commands with his eyes closed probably, and another one of us knows everything there is to know about Firefox.

We’re coming up on 8,000 posts, and nearly 300 members in the forum. We’d love for you to become a part of it. I’d say everybody is pretty laid back and happy to help with a problem or question no matter how large or small it may be. You can access the forum from the link in the navigation bar, or you can get a sneak peak at forum topics in the sidebar.

Check-out the CyberNet Forum

Messenger and Google Talk to Work Together?

This article was written on December 26, 2007 by CyberNet.

These days most of us can’t get away with using just one instant messenger. You have a few contacts that you talk to on Messenger, a few on Google Talk, a handful on AIM, etc., and so it’s impossible to use just one. I’ve always wondered why the different services didn’t get their act together to offer a single service that worked with all of the other services, but they haven’t.  Sure there’s Trillian, but you still have to sign in to all of the services that you use separately.  Things might be about to change in the near future though.  According to LiveSide, Microsoft has been able to get Windows Live Messenger 9 which is currently in private testing, to communicate with Google Talk.

google talk

Of course Google Talk and Messenger aren’t the only two services that people use, and so the team at Microsoft is working on a solution for incorporating AIM and ICQ too. Given that Windows Live Messenger 8 and Yahoo Messenger already work together, it would certainly be nice to see it working with other services as well.  Wouldn’t it be great to open up one service that worked with all of them? We can expect to see Windows Live Messenger 9 sometime in late 08′ or early 09′ and now I can’t wait…
