Qualcomm fends off Smartbook AG, can legally write ‘smartbook’ on the platform’s tombstone

Qualcomm fends of Smartbook AG legal action, can now write

It’s perhaps a little too little and a little too late, but Qualcomm can now use the word “smartbook” to describe low end smartphone/laptop hybrids — the sort of machine the company’s CEO says have been all but killed off by tablets. The unfortunate legal action initiated by Smartbook AG way back in 2009 has now been deemed invalid by the German Patent and Trademark Office. The combination of the words word “smart” and “book” are no longer covered by German trademark law, which seemingly leaves Smartbook AG in a rather more vulnerable position than it was in before. Not as vulnerable as the poor smartbook platform, though.

Porsche unveils fully-electric Boxster E, a drop-top EV we can get behind

Porsche unveils fully-electric Boxter E, a drop-top EV we can get behind

They’re just prototypes at this point and number only three, but the trio of Boxster E convertibles Porsche has produced could be a sign of very good things to come from the company. Of course there’s the 918 RSR and 918 Spyder, but the former of those two is intended only for the track and the latter only for the incredibly wealthy. An EV Boxster could be attainable by the only moderately wealthy, though of course Porsche’s giving no indication of price for these yet. Nor range, sadly, nor performance — they’re simply “rolling laboratories” that will provide data for future models to come. Sweet, sweet data.

LG Optimus Pad priced at €999 in Germany

LG Optimus Pad priced at €999 in Germany

Yikes. We just finished getting our fingerprints all over LG’s Optimus Pad (aka the G-Slate), and now we’re thinking we should have been wearing white gloves while doing so. The tablet is coming in March to the US, but we didn’t know a price. Now we do — in Germany, at least, and get ready to wince: €999. That’s about $1,350 if you do a straight conversion, out-classing even the Xoom‘s eye-wateringly high $1,199 pre-order price, which we’re still holding out hope is a misprint. Maybe the golden goo in Honeycomb really is gold.

Update: Roland wrote in to remind us that German prices include a 19 percent VAT, which would drop this price down to a mere $1,075 if you’re into the conversion game. Well within pocket change territory.

[Thanks, Enzo]

Mercedes F-Cell World Drive gets off to an inauspicious start

Mercedes F-Cell World Drive gets off to an inauspicious start

Circling the globe on hydrogen power sounds like a bit of a challenge, what with the lack H2 pumps and all, but Mercedes-Benz set off to show that it could do just that — with the help of a mobile filling station, natürlich. It’s the F-Cell World Drive, and unfortunately, things got off to something of a bad start with two cars running out of fuel on the very first leg of the journey, one with Autoblog‘s Michael Harley at the wheel, no less. This first leg apparently began with a trip down an unrestricted bit of the Autobahn and, well, it seems the drivers of the cars decided to see what the little green B-Class F-Cells could do. The answer is 110mph, and of course moving along at this rate of speed did little for their range. The two cars came up 20km short of their first planned refueling stop, heavy right feet resulting in consumption of 1.5Kg of hydrogen per 100km distance — roughly equivalent of 45mpg and way less than the 71mpg equivalent the cars usually manage. We’re told day two, when drivers kept the speed to around 70mph, progressed much more smoothly, with both cars covering their expected legs without issue.

HTC Desire 2, Flyer, Pyramid and LG Optimus 3D, Star Tab surface in Vodafone Germany inventory system

There are leaks, and then there are leaks. As you can probably glean from the headline, this is most certainly a case of the latter. FoneArena has received shots of what appears to be a Vodafone Germany inventory system, and it’s a system currently overflowing with both rumored and heretofore unheard of product names. HTC’s Flyer and Pyramid are all but confirmed for a MWC unveiling, while the Desire 2 is popping up on our radar for the first time. We’ve also been told that LG’s Optimus 3D will be fully revealed next week in Barcelona, but the Star Tab? Now that’s a new one. Of course, it shouldn’t come as any surprise to see a swath of new names pop up just days before the year’s most gargantuan mobile show, but it definitely brings about a metric ton of questions. Is the Star Tab a phone? A slate? A unicorn-based gaming console? Will the Desire 2 simply be more desirable than the original, or will it utilize one of those new screen technologies HTC is feverishly working on? Hard to say from a simple list of names, but you can bet we’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for more as Mobile World Congress approaches.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

German researchers prototype 6mm thick pico projector

Pico projectors just keep shrinking, and a new prototype developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Engineering is helping said shrinking along pretty strikingly. The team has developed a prototype pico which is just 6mm thick, making it the world’s slimmest ever. Better yet, the projected image is 10 times brighter than a pico projector of its size would have previously been — had it existed. The new lens on the projector is so small that it could potentially be integrated into smart phones without boosting size or weight. The new prototype is made of 45 red, green or blue microlenses, each with a 200 x 200 pixel LCD, inspired by a microlens array called a fly’s eye condenser. The resulting resolution is nearly, but not quite, WVGA with 11 lumens of brightness. The prototype will be shown off at Nano Tech 2011 in Tokyo.

LG Optimus 2X and Optimus Black priced at €499 by Amazon Germany, not yet available to buy

Amazon’s German outlet has started listing LG’s two latest and undoubtedly greatest phones: the Optimus 2X (seemingly renamed the Optimus Speed here) and the Optimus Black. Both run Android 2.2 on 4-inch screens, with the former offering a dual-core Tegra 2 processor capable of 1080p video recording and HDMI output, and the latter cranking up the display brightness to a quite unreasonable 700 nits. The Optimus Black also has one of the thinnest profiles on a smartphone of its class at 9.2mm, and will be one of the first phones to offer WiFi Direct connectivity. Intriguingly, Amazon’s Optimus Speed / 2X listing also shows a brown color option for the handset, though only its black SKU is subject to a neat €50 discount bringing its price to €499, the same as the cost of the Optimus Black. We don’t know when either one will drop, but you can go and reserve yourself one (or a dozen) at the links below.

[Thanks, Julian]

German robot hand takes a licking, apparently keeps on ticking (video)

Sadists at the German Aerospace Center’s (DLR) Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics are showing off their latest development in anthropomorphic appendages: a robotic hand that can take a beating from a baseball bat and still give you the middle finger (or a thumbs-up, we suppose). Researchers apparently designed the limb to function like only a human hand can, and it seems they’ve done a decent job: it’s got five independently functioning fingers, sports 19 degrees of freedom (one less than the real deal), and can even snap them phalanges — oh no they didn’t! It’s also got the ability to exert a force of 30 newtons from its fingertips. So what makes it so resilient? The robo-hand has a built-in web of 38 tendons, which allow it to adapt its stiffness under different circumstances: a step away, its creators say, from rigid appendages of the past. There’s a video of the hand taking a beating after the jump, but honestly, we’d prefer to see what happens when the hand fights back.

T-Mobile USA talks future, Deutsche Telekom weaning it off lifeline; Clearwire spectrum purchase still in play?

Germany’s Deutsche Telekom — better known in the States as T-Mobile USA’s disciplinarian parent — was out in New York today chatting up its American division’s prospects for the future, and execs from both sides of the pond had quite a bit to say. The biggest outstanding concerns for the carrier revolve around revenue and customer churn — which, let’s be honest, are the core benchmarks that any carrier in the world is looking to improve — and the division’s CEO Philipp Humm just announced a series of initiatives to help get those numbers in line. On the churn side, they’re “going big with Android” to combat the iPhone, continuing to roll out WiFi calling to alleviate network coverage issues, and tightening up “risk management” issues that have let some bill deadbeats slip through the cracks. Funny to think that non-payment is a big enough issue to be a revenue risk for these guys, but it’s true.

White iPhone 4 shows up in Vodafone Germany’s inventory system

Could it be that Apple and Foxconn engineers have finally found a way to harness and contain the raw, blinding power of the color white? Last we’d heard, the rarest member of the iPhone 4 clan was tracking for a spring ’11 launch — and that’d line up pretty nicely with shots we’ve received from a trusted source today showing new entries in Vodafone Germany’s inventory system for weiß (white) iPhone 4s in both 16 and 32GB flavors. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean Vodafone has any idea when these phones are showing up on their doorstep — maybe they’re just preparing (and hoping) that it materializes before too long — but for what it’s worth, the source says to expect a launch “soon.” If you’ve got a few hundred euro lying around, we suppose it’ll be a good way to bide your time while you wait for an iPhone 5 launch in a few months, right?
