Rosum’s Alloy chip promises ‘precise’ location using TV signals

Though plenty of firms (including some big ones) have been trying to commercialize consumer-facing indoor positioning technologies for years, none have succeeded on a wide scale — which certainly seems to leave the door wide open for a system that actually works to be wildly successful, doesn’t it? Rosum has been toying with the idea of using plain old TV signals to accurately locate people and objects within GPS-hating structures for years, and with today’s launch of its so-called Alloy system with partner Siano, the company could be closer to wide-scale deployment. Basically, Alloy combines AGPS (for maximum precision outdoors and in marginal areas) with support for a variety of types of TV signals to enhance coverage and provide <150 meter accuracy even in the deepest, darkest, dankest corners of your home where traditional GPS would never dream of going. What’s more, Rosum touts that TV positioning is several orders of magnitude more power-efficient than AGPS, music to the ears of anyone who’s struggling to get a full day’s battery out of their phone. They’re sampling chipsets beginning this month, but don’t expect it in handsets right away — Rosum’s primary target appears to be femtocell makers. The devices traditionally require GPS reception, requiring unsightly remote GPS antennas if you’re not interested in balancing the cell on a window sill, so a technology like this should let you properly bury that network extender behind a bookshelf where it belongs. Mio Unveils the Moov V780

The market for stand-alone GPS devices may be eroding, but that only means navigation companies need to work harder to create the next generation of mapping products. Feast your eyes on the Mio Moov V780, which will make its debut at CeBIT 2010 this week. It’s slim and offers a big 7-inch screen, but it’s what’s inside that really has our attention.

Going beyond navigation, the Moov V780 includes a digital TV receiver and wireless connectivity. It can play HD movies and videos up to 720p and includes HD output for connecting to your set. the Moov V780 also comes with a carry case with keyboard, so it can easily become a Web browser or e-mail station. And it will show photos and YouTube videos, and includes a slick new 3D interface.

Mio will give more details at a press conference on Thursday. Nice move, Mio; this could be a hit of the show.

Mio stuns at CeBIT with ultra-sleek Moov V780 MID

Uh, folks — we’ve an identity crisis on our hands. Is this a MID with a penchant for navigating? Is this a PMP with pre-loaded maps? Is it an ultra-sleek navigator that just so happens to play music? There’s a fair chance the world will never know, but we’ll soon be stopping by Mio‘s booth at CeBIT in order to get a view of things ourselves. At any rate, the Moov V780 is undoubtedly one of the most appealing things to come from the outfit in quite some time, offering up 720p multimedia playback, an HDMI output, digital TV support, a 7-inch (800 x 480 resolution) display, 600MHz CPU, 512MB of memory, 4GB of onboard flash and a pretty tremendous list of supported file formats. Sadly, it’s humming along on Windows CE (rather than, say, Android), but at least it ships with WiFi and optional WiMAX. There’s no mention of a price or release date, but we’ll be on the hunt for those tidbits as soon as the show floor opens up.

Raytheon scores $886 million contract to improve GPS capabilities

Don’t count on your navigation unit seeing a sudden improvement anytime soon, but Raytheon has announced that it’s landed an massive $886 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to develop a new element of GPS called the advanced control segment (or OCX, somehow). Once complete, that promises to not only provide a range of enhancements for military GPS use (including anti-jam capabilities and improved security), but improved accuracy and reliability for civil GPS users as well. Details are otherwise a bit light, and this contract only represents the first of two development blocks, but it looks like GLONASS and Galileo may have to step up their game a bit further if they want to stay competitive in the great sat-nav race.

IBM Scientists Analyze, Break Traffic Gridlock

IBM announced yesterday a new research initiative that could slash travel times, by building personalized routes for commuters to avoid traffic gridlock.
At a smart transportation event in Washington D.C, IBM announced that its researchers are using advanced analytics to develop adaptive traffic systems. These systems, in theory, could “learn” traveler patterns and behavior–sort of like an advanced version of TomTom’s IQ Routes for its GPS devices, which is based on historical data.
The researchers are developing models that go one step further, and actually predict the outcomes of different transportation routes, from which it will devise personalized recommendations for specific commutes. This is much more useful than plain traffic reporting, which talks about jams after they happen in the hopes that commuters can learn the reports and avoid the jams in time (often without success).

Garmin and TomTom cling to profits, hope

As everyone knows, Garmin and TomTom have their backs against the ropes in a fight to remain relevant in an age of free GPS turn-by-turn navigation on smartphones (thanks Google and Nokia). While dedicated personal navigators are almost always superior to their converged competition, the gap has certainly narrowed such that it’s become difficult to justify another device when an increasing number of people already carry a fine navigation device in their pockets. But that’s just gut instinct talking, where’s the hard evidence? Certainly not speculative stock prices. A good place to start is in forward-looking financial statements like the one Garmin, the leading navigation device maker in the US, just issued. Gamin says that it expects competition to cause prices to decline by about 10% in the personal navigation device (PND) industry putting pressure on margins, and thus profits, in 2010. It also sees flat or slightly declining revenue over the same period. Fortunately for Garmin, it has a diversified product offering that includes the Nuvifone. However, Garmin admits to being disappointed by sales of the handset that “won” our Editor’s Choice award for Worst Gadget of the Year.

Things aren’t all doom and gloom, though. Garmin has a pair of Nuvifones in the chute including the Android-powered A50. And its Q4 results of $1.43 per share easily beat analyst expectations of 95 cents a share. Even TomTom surprised many last week with a 1% increase in Q4 revenue and net profit of €75 million compared to a €989 million loss a year ago. So there’s some hope left for the dedicated PND market… but not much.

Ford adding HOV logic, ability to download outside Mapquest destinations to 2011 NAV systems

Ford’s been keeping itself busy on the navigation front, and while you may have noticed that 2010 just began a few weeks ago (on the Gregorian calendar, anyway), 2011 model year vehicles are already on the minds of those in Dearborn. 2011 models with voice-activated navigation systems will be getting an update that brings along HOV logic, helping users who travel with a buddy to get from point A to point B more hastily if carpool lanes are nearby. Of course, only 2,500 miles of those blanket America, so a few other updates might be intriguing to those of you who are sane enough to live outside of the rat race. Branded POI icons, higher density street labeling and HD Radio will come standard on voice-controlled NAV systems, and potentially most interesting is the notion that “integration with SYNC Traffic, Directions and Information (TDI) app — enabling new features like the ability to download destinations sent from a home or work computer from Mapquest” — will hit later on in the year. Android-powered GoGear Connect PMP debuted in new, Godzilla-sized form factor

We’re used to seeing some ho-hum units with the GoGear name, so we were pleasantly surprised to hear (well, read) that Philips was getting much more ambitious for its upcoming GoGear Connect line of PMPs. Plans are said to include the Android 2.1 OS, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, and extensive skinning that plays up the media player / navigation device angle. Although there’s no cellular connectivity herein, there is a speaker and mic for some VoIP action, alongside haptic feedback for the touchscreen display, a memory card slot, rear-facing camera of unknown resolution, up to 64GB storage, and DivX/XviD support. Neither price nor release date has been confirmed (though Q3 2010 is a possibility, according to SlashGear). Indeed, we haven’t even seen one of the units, even in prototype form — but there is an amusing King Kong-scale device running the OS in the video demonstration, which means they definitely have designs on the monster movie demographic. Car Thieves Use GPS Jammers to Make Clean Getaway

Every time tech is used to fight crime, the bad guys just get better gear. The only crime-fighter who manages to always have the better gadget is Batman. Now car thieves are using GPS jammers to blot out the satellite signals that some antitheft services use to locate stolen automobiles.

It’s not hard to do, either. A quick Google Shopping search for GPS blockers shows models on sale for under $30. They don’t even need to be powerful. In order to swamp the incoming satellite signals, a jammer only needs to put out two watts of power. Speaking at a symposium, Bob Cockshott of “cybersecurity” company Digital Systems KTN said that “the strength of a GPS signal is about as strong as viewing a 25-watt light bulb from a satellite 10,000 miles away.” Small wonder that sat-nav devices take so long to acquire a lock.

It’s not just criminals who are using this tech, either. Employees whose cars are tracked by their companies use them to go off the clock, and according to The Guardian, German truck drivers use them to “to evade GPS-based road charging.”

But knocking off gas-guzzling cars and sticking it to the man are just the annoying part of the potential for GPS jammers. A 20-watt unit would be enough to cover a commercial airport, with rather scary results.

There is also the possibility of feeding false signals to a GPS unit, which would be harder for an operator to spot than straight-up jamming. If you start doing that to boats driven by sailors with no sextant experience, you get havoc.

Still, something good could come of this. It’s possible that people reading the story could become less trusting of their in-car sat-nav units and actually look through the windshield once in a while. This would avoid the estimated 300,000 crashes caused in Britain every year by GPS-following fools.

Casio’s GPS-equipped EX-10HG camera gets a price, launch date

Last we saw Casio’s GPS-equipped EX-10HG it was still in prototype form at CES, but the company was back with it again at PMA this week, and thankfully was a bit more talkative this time. The big news is that the camera will be available in October of this year, and will cost “around $400.” That will get you a 12.1-megapixel camera that not only does geotagging of photos (with some accelerometer-based assistance when a GPS signal isn’t available), but can even double as a navigation system in a pinch — although it’s still not exactly clear how fully functional that aspect of the camera will be.
