APSI 100 GPS packs removable PMP, can’t be removed from South Korea

GPS devices have been packing full PMP functionality for quite some time now, but few have come up with the bright idea of using an actual, removable PMP for the heart of the unit — although Apple and TomTom are now doing their best attempt at a one-two punch. Korean manufacturer APSI now made its best attempt at a fully out-of-the-box solution with its new APSI 100 unit, however, which combines the simplicity of a touchscreen PMP with the in-car convenience of some old fashioned buttons and knobs. Unfortunately, the complete specs are a bit hard to decipher, but it looks like you will get some built-in DMB mobile TV (complete with an antenna jack on the base unit), along with some nifty 3D maps, and both AV inputs and outputs, among other standard fare. No word on a price, unfortunately, and it looks like this one is, and will likely remain, a Korean exclusive.

TomTom’s Car Kit for iPhone will be your co-pilot in October

Well, it just passed through the FCC last week, and it looks like TomTom itself is now finally getting a bit more specific about when its new Car Kit for iPhone will start shipping. While it’s still not providing an exact date just yet, the company’s newly-updated FAQ now says that the device will be available directly from TomTom sometime this October. What’s more, the company also says that the kit (which also works with the iPod touch) will be initially sold without the TomTom iPhone app, contrary to what was previously rumored, although it’s not clear if a bundle with the app will also be available at a later date.

TomTom’s new x50 user interface gets pictured

We’ll be honest — after seeing TomTom‘s best efforts on its flagship GO 740 LIVE, we couldn’t be happier to witness a new user interface for the outfit’s PNDs. After taking the wraps off of the GO 950, GO 750 and GO 550 yesterday at IFA, the good folks over at Mobility Minded were able to take a quick peek at some UI improvements that’ll ship on the new trio. Aside from just looking entirely more modern, TomTom also added a “Live” tab that gives drivers quick access to upcoming traffic, the cheapest gas nearby and the location of fixed and mobile safety cameras. We’d still like to see a bit more overhauling in the future, but if you’re interested in a closer look at what’s changing in the immediate, give that read link some love.

Garmin’s New Tiny In-Bike GPS

Garmin probably realizes that as more and more cellphones pack GPS, less and less people will be buying units for their cars. Luckily, the company has a big hand in the outdoor market, where people want something more rugged and, more importantly, something that doesn’t rely on a monthly contract or weigh a ton.

The Edge 500 is an in-bike GPS, and while it won’t give you turn by turn directions to the nearest Dunkin’ Donuts, it will replace your cycle computer and do a whole lot more, all in a lightweight two ounces. It has all the expected measurements: speed, distance, altitude, but it will also connect wirelessly to compatible (ANT) power meters and cadence sensors, and will track your heart-rate for calorie counting purposes (so you will know the exact moment you can head to Dunkin’ Donuts).

When you get home the unit hooks up to a computer and charges via USB, and of course lets you upload all the data and study it the form of maps and charts. The Edge 500 will be $250, and $350 in a kit with a heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor. Available in the fall.

TomTom unveils GO 950, GO 750 and GO 550 with IQ Routes at IFA

Here lately, all of the buzz surrounding TomTom has been focused intently on the outfit’s iPhone app and accompanying car kit. But over in Berlin, the company seems entirely more interested in showcasing some new wares that fall into its core product category. Making its debut at IFA, the GO x50 lineup is comprised of the GO 950, GO 750 and GO 550, all of which tout the company’s IQ Routes technology to get you from point A to point B in the very least amount of time. The trio promises to calculate routes faster than ever before, and they also include the planet’s largest collection of historical speed profiles. Once you’re on your way, the units can tap into RDS-TMC services in order to take current road conditions into account and get you from point A to point B in the least amount of time. Also of note, these three now feature voice command and control, and each ships with an active dock with integrated RDS-TMC information. The x50 lineup is scheduled to ship this autumn for undisclosed amounts, with the GO 950 packing maps for the US, Canada and 45 European nations and the GO 750 / GO 550 offering maps in select regions of Europe only.

Sanyo’s Gorilla Lite PND packs 4GB in an incredibly thin frame

Sanyo, a company best known among mid-80s McKean Elementary school students for the portable cassette recorder Henry Hutchinson used to incessantly play “Mr. Telephone Man” by New Edition (true story), seems to be going from strength to strength with its Gorilla line of handheld PNDs. The NV-LB50DT Gorilla Lite packs a 5-inch touchscreen, LED backlight, and 4GB SSD in a package a mere 18.8mm thin. The device also features a 1Seg digital TV tuner, an accelerometer for switching between landscape and portrait mode, support for MP4, JPEG, MP3, and WMA playback, and Sanyo ECO mode (which tells you if your driving style is good or bad for the environment). Sure, this isn’t the DVD playing, CD-ripping powerhorse that we last saw from the company, but you probably knew that as soon as you saw the word “Lite” in the name. Available soon for a price to be determined.

NSF Awards $2 Million to Study Space Weather

Virginia_Tech_Space_Weather.jpgThe National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $2 million grant to researchers at Virginia Tech to build a chain of space weather instrument stations in Antartica, according to NetworkWorld.

The new stations will consist of radar units that hook into the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network, an international project that when combined will give extensive views of the upper atmosphere in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions, according to the report.

The researchers hope to use the stations to better understand how space weather affects satellite performance for GPS, TV reception, and cell phones. In addition, astronauts are vulnerable to energetic radiation at space station altitudes, the report said, and electric power distribution systems can be disrupted by geomagnetic storms. Bob Dylan: Voice Behind Your Next GPS System?

BobDylanNavigation.jpgBob Dylan, the musical voice of his generation, could the voice of your next car navigation system or portable navigation device (PND). He said so himself this week on his BBC satellite radio program, that he’s negotiating with two automakers to be the voice behind their navigation systems. Take that, James Earl Jones. Dylan certainly has enough lyrics to his credit that, with several decades hindsight, foreshadowed the GPS revolution: “how many roads,” “no direction home,” and “there must be someway out of here.” (Be sure to post any we forgot below in feedback.)

Worried that Bob Dylan’s sellling out? Not to worry. If it happened, it was long before the navigation opportunity. As the Washington Post noted, he’s done commercial work for Cadillac, Pepsi, and Victoria’s Secret. In a 2007 commercial for the Cadillac Escalade, Dylan asked, “What’s life without the occasional detour?”

GPS study finds that real-time traffic updates save drivers four days per year

You know what we hate? Sitting in gridlock when we could be, you know, out doin’ stuff. At the very least, it’s the antithesis of the “wind in your hair,” Dean Moriarty-esque image we’ve carefully cultivated over the years. “If only,” we say to ourselves, “there was a way to find routes that were free of congestion.” Sure, we’ve heard all about your fancy real-time traffic updates — but how well do they actually work? According to a study by the GIS data and services company NAVTEQ (so, you know, take it with a grain of salt), drivers that use GPS systems with real-time traffic info spend 18% less time behind the wheel than those who do not (that’s a whopping four days over the course of a single year, or enough time to watch 1 1/2 Peter Watkins films). In addition, the company says that smarter navigation has been shown to lower CO2 output by 21 percent — which is a good deal, no matter how you slice it. There’s been no study yet to determine how drastically driver performance would decrease if Bob Dylan was the voice of your PND, but we’ll definitely keep our eyes out for that one.

GPS Hackers Blaze Own Trails With Crowdsourced Maps

Last month, when Zack Ajmal was planning a vacation to Italy, he set out to find the first thing that a traveler would need in a foreign land: a map. But digital maps of Rome and Venice for his Garmin GPS device cost almost $100. So instead, Ajmal turned to OpenStreetMap, a community-driven maps database.

“It worked out pretty well,” the Atlanta-based engineer says. “I found Open MTB, which had outdoor hiking and cycling maps with not just roads information, but also trails, short cuts and little known routes.”

Ajmal is among roughly half a million users who are eschewing proprietary maps information from GPS companies and instead going with crowdsourced versions, which they then load onto their GPS devices and smartphones.

The key to these map hacks is OpenStreetMap. Founded in 2004, OSM is to maps what Wikipedia is to encyclopedias. The site offers maps that can be edited, customized and loaded on to devices for free. Want to go whitewater rafting but need to know where the rapids are? There’s a map for that. Or to know all the interesting points along the river Nile? There’s a map for that. And it’s all based on the OpenStreetMap data.

“The value is that it is richer map with more up-to-date information because anyone can fix things,” says Steve Coast,  founder of OpenStreetMap. “Users get access to the underlying data and not just a picture of the maps.”

Consumer map data is currently a duopoly split between two mapping providers: Nokia’s Navteq and TomTom’s Tele Atlas. The two provide the mapping data that powers almost all commercial map applications and devices. But maps from these providers are extremely restrictive in how they can be used. Want a map of the best hiking trails in the country or a walking tour of Rome? Traditional GPS services can’t offer that. For adventurous geeks that calls for a DIY fix.

“OSM maps are a little new on the scene,” says Rich Owings, who runs the GPStracklog.com website and is the author of the book GPS Mapping. “Most people in the U.S. were not using them until recently, but now there are iPhone apps based on it.”

Getting OpenStreetMap is easier on some devices than others. In Garmin systems, it’s as simple as taking one of the available maps and dropping it into a folder on the device.

OpenStreetMap Project for TomTom: TomTom’s proprietary file format makes it difficult to get open maps on the device. But a wiki suggests a fix for OpenStreetMap and TomTom.

“It’s really hard to mess up your GPS doing this,” says Owings. “And if you have questions you can always ask the community to help you out.” Owings says he loaded maps of Ecuador on his Garmin unit in about 30 minutes. “It’s not as clean of a map as one you can get from the Garmin store but they are pretty wonderful and have very good coverage.”

For TomTom systems, getting OpenStreetMap can be a more difficult process. TomTom uses a proprietary mapping format, says Coast. That means a tricky process of converting OpenStreetMap into a TomTom-compatible format.

OpenStreetMap has also been used to create iPhone apps such as MotionX, which is targeted at hikers, skiers and bikers; B.iCycle, a cyclometer that shows burned calories, trip distance and trails; and ATM@UK, which shows all ATM locations in Great Britain.

The OpenStreetMap project is a cartographer’s dream come true, says Randal Hale, who has a GIS consulting business. Hale has created custom maps for a few clients using OpenStreetMap and has put OSM-generated maps on his Garmin unit.

“With the professional mapping software, I have to purchase a license to use their version, which is expensive and I can’t use the data for analysis,” says Hale. “With OpenStreetMap, I download it, make cartographic edits and hopefully I have made it better for the next user.”

Meanwhile, traditional navigation companies are also reaching out to users for help on data. For instance, Nokia kicked off a pilot project at the University of California at Berkeley to collect traffic information through GPS-enabled cellphones. Users could download the software for free and use it to check on road conditions on their phones. At the same time, the software would report data about its users’ positions to a central database, enabling the researchers to assemble traffic data in real time. Google has also said it will add nationwide real-time traffic data to its maps by collecting anonymous location data from Google Maps users.

Still, community-created maps and navigation information remains a small niche, appealing only to “GPS techies” who are willing to take risks, says Owings. “There’s not a lot of public awareness because many people don’t even know they can do this with their Garmin or cellphone,” he says.

But if you are planning to go to Berlin later this year, take a look at the OpenStreetMap site. Germany is expected to become the first country in the site’s database to be fully mapped by contributors.
