AT&T’s Samsung Magnet hands-on with video

Samsung’s Magnet is inexpensive, orange, QWERTY, and we’re really liking it. Sure, we don’t have a price or an official date, but we we came away from our meeting with the Magnet feeling rather happy about the whole experience. Yeah, the web browser is a bit lightweight, and the color choice garish, but we can’t find fault with that as it is aimed directly at a market that digs messaging and bright colors. The Magnet is comfortable to hold, the OS very responsive, and the screen ample bright and large enough to get the job done. The Keyboard, and the phone’s size are very similar to a Nokia E71 (which we compare it to in the video for scale) so if you’ve checked one of those out, you’ll know where we’re coming from. A dash of 3G would add to the joy here, but then again, it would add to the price, too. Pics and videos are just after the break.

Update: Trimmed out background noise, or tried to.

Samsung Mondi WiMAX hands-on with video

While we caught this at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, Samsung officially launched its WiMAX / WiFi Mondi at CTIA today. Samsung’s SWD-M100 MID runs Windows Mobile — and we have to say that it looks really polished — with the transitions between homescreen panels being particularly stunning — check the vid to see it in action. While thin, the popout lower lip keypad is a tough thing to use, the width of the keypad itself and the positioning of the d-pad make it all seem a bit awkward to use. We do like the 4.3-inch display, though suspect it may prove to be a tad power hungry once this gets a little more real on Clear‘s WiMAX network. Follow on for a short vid and a handful of pics of us playing with this big glossy thing.

HP’s Pavilion dv2 spotted in the wild, on sale in Thailand

The first machine to rely on AMD’s Neo MV-40 processor has officially been spotted outside of a show floor, though you’ll have to jet to Bangkok if you’re looking to touch one yourself. The atypically well-specced 12.1-inch Pavilion dv2 has been spotted over in Thailand for around $720, and while it doesn’t look drastically (or at all, really) different than what we saw at CES this year, it’s good to see this bugger finally creeping into homes. Check the read link for a few more angles and impressions, and feel free to get your hopes up for a US release in the not-too-distant future.

AT&T’s Samsung Propel Pro hands-on

AT&T’s Propel Pro ups the ante not only in build quality and material, but the new set is also reborn as a proper smartphone thanks to the inclusion of Windows Mobile 6.1. Though like its predecessor, we find a QWERTY keypad for the much loved messaging features, a 3 megapixel camera, and a well thought out and put together metal housing — though the latter does add heft to an already chubby device. So, what do we like? Well, the display is right on, the keypad is solid, and the $149 price tag is definitely going to win it some fans looking for a messaging device that’ll do a bit more. The heft on the other hand is a bit much, and we’re still troubled by the almost square form factor, but what do we know, people loved the Samsung Propel. We’ll take some more time to get to know it tomorrow and hopefully add a little video to the mix — and some decent lighting.

AT&T’s Samsung Impression hands-on with video

With AT&T’s Samsung Impression packing things like quad-band GSM, dual-band HSPA for the Americas and a supremely useable QWERTY keypad, we’re suitably impressed. All that magic aside, the screen, a fairly giant 3.2-inch AMOLED number, is where the big draw for us lies. The display is completely stunning and viewable from just about any angle, the keypad is pretty much right on, and the set just feels like money to hold onto. Coupled with a reasonable 3 megapixel cam with digital zoom and geotagging support, and we’re expecting this to be a wildly popular device at its $200 price point. We tried to capture the beauty of the Impression with vids — we’ve taken the leap from VGA — and pics which you’ll find right after the break.

Samsung HZ15W and hands-on, with friends

We’re not exactly enthused at all the granularity makes up Samsung’s wide assortment of digital compacts, but it’s not like they’re the only offenders in the industry. In the high end they’ve got the HZ15W and TL320 — we’ve seen the TL320 and is marvelous analog dials in the wild before, but the HZ15W is a new one on us. Overall the camera is a bit bulky for this segment, and we’d have a hard time sticking it into a pants or jacket pocket without discomfort. That said, the camera is flush with functionality like HDMI out, 720p video recording and a wide view lens. The second look at the TL320 reminded us how completely in love we are its analog dials, though unfortunately the pre-production model we were looking at was having trouble with its OLED screen. The rest of the line, including the SL820, SL620 and SL202, was hanging out for the photo op, but there wasn’t much that stood out.

Samsung YP-Q2 and YP-U5 hands-on

Samsung has rounded out its line of DAPs with the new YP-U5 and YP-Q2, both squarely targeted at what have come to be well-defined DAP categories in recent years. The Q2 (pictured) has a friendly icon-based interface, with familiar touch-sensitive controls below the screen — though we found ourselves futilely tapping at the large bright icons out of habit. The interface is fast, the screen is great, and the feature set builds on Samsung’s typical kitchen sink, now including DNSe 3.0 sound enhancement — though we’d say the 50 hour battery life steals the show. The U5 looks thoroughly dated, though it’s more ergonomically friendly to those athletic types among us than some thumb daps. The teensy black and white OLED screen makes it a bit of a chore to run through the functions, but at least it’s there.

Dell Studio XPS 13 unboxing and hands-on

We finally managed to wrestle one of the sleek Studio XPSs from Dell’s mitts, and we’ve got the pics to prove it. At first glance, the 13-inch laptop is striking, with its leather wrapped back and high gloss finish. However, we have a few minor quibbles that make the laptop a little less exciting than we’d hoped. Firstly, the leather is a bit rippled across the top — not a huge deal, but it skews the “design” aspect here. In a similar fashion, the super-glare display is just as distracting as it is on other screens of this type, and there seems to be another slight ripple — or wave — in the plastic (though this isn’t wholly uncommon). Once you open the box, you’re greeted to a matte, low-profile keyboard that feels terrific to the touch, though unfortunately the trackpad is not only minuscule in size, but located to the left of center, which makes no sense to us (especially on something of this size). For hands like ours, we found the experience to be a bit cramped. On the software side, the boot into Vista was certainly speedy, and though we had typical issues (crapware, pop-ups, general bugginess), the system still felt pretty snappy. We’re going to be taking a more in-depth look — especially at the capabilities of that NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G 9500M GPU — but for now, feast your eyes on the gallery below!

Update: Our mistake! We actually have the model with the 9500M GPU. Even better!

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic review

We’ve had a chance to put the North American version of Nokia’s latest touchscreen device and its first to run S60 5th Edition — the 5800 XpressMusic — through its paces over on Engadget Mobile, and let’s put it this way: if you’re thinking about taking the plunge on this bad boy, you might want to have a look. No, seriously, it’s just one click away — can’t hurt, now, can it?

Foxit’s eSlick e-reader ships out, gets photographed

It didn’t quite make it out in January, but Foxit’s eSlick is still about the cheapest way to get an e-reader in front of your retinas. Granted, only the earliest of pre-orderers are seeing their units ship, and if you try to jump in now, you’ll be greeted with a note to not expect it for another fortnight or so. In fact, all three hues (black, grey and white) are currently sold out, with new batches expected to be ready by April 10th or so. Thankfully, the kind folks over at GearDiary have hosted up a few photos and have promised impressions in the not too distant future, so head on over if you’re anxious to see just how far this thing is from being a Kindle.
