Sling Monitor in-home placeshifter hands-up

Sling Monitor placeshifting TV

We just heard about the Sling Monitor, a quick way to move content from your Dish ViP 922 around your home, but we had to see it for ourselves. The display model at the Echostar booth was mounted way above eye-level, so we had to take some blind shots above the head. Look with your eyes, not your hands!

HP Firebird with Voodoo DNA hands-on

We just hit up HP’s booth to check out the new Firebird gaming rig, and it’s pretty slick looking, although it’s a lot bigger than we expected / hoped. The side panels are actually a cool translucent smoke finish, and the blue LED lighting might be the first classy gaming PC light kit we’ve ever seen. HP was demoing the Firebird with Left 4 Dead and Crysis, and the gamers on hand seemed pretty pleased — we’ll have see how the $1,799 machine’s 2.83GHz Core 2 Quad and dual NVIDIA GeForce 9800S graphics cards benchmark out when it’s released on February 1st. Check it all in the gallery!

MSI X-Slim 320 vs MacBook Air… fight!

You knew the comparisons were inevitable, but have you braced yourself for how incredibly similar these two laptops are? MSI’s new X-Slim 320 13.3-inch ultraportable is a teensy bit wider and a teensy bit thicker than the MacBook Air, but most of the dimensions, layouts and curves are uncannily alike. As for build quality, MSI obviously suffers a bit for its netbook heritage. The plastics aren’t stellar, and the keyboard, while delightfully full size, is a tad squishy, but there’s still no denying that this is a pretty wild deal for this very particular form factor — plus that built-in 3G, VGA and Ethernet are just rubbing it in Apple’s face.

Motorola SURF A3100 video (and pictorial) hands-on

Like the Curve 8900, it turns out that Motorola’s SURF is a device that kinda needs to be seen in the flesh to be fully appreciated. In light of TouchFLO and its endless competitors, the skin Moto’s developed for this thing — while tasteful and seemingly finger-friendly — really isn’t anything to get terribly excited about, but it does an adequate job of making the superficial surface of Windows Mobile reasonably finger-friendly. The screen feels great, and yeah, the SURF includes a stylus — but hey, what WinMo phone doesn’t? Ultimately, we think it’s going to be a totally serviceable alternative to, say, a Touch Diamond — only problem is that the Touch Diamond is like 8 months old. If Moto had launched this running Android instead of WinMo, on the other hand, it would’ve been the runaway hit of the show. Follow the break for a super-quick video tour of the UI!

Sony Ericsson’s C510 Cyber-shot hands-on

Sony Ericsson, while dwarfed by big brother Sony’s launches at the show this year, did at least show a couple sets today. Feature list includes a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, Smile Shutter technology that detects a smile a immediately grabs the shot, Snapfish, and YouTube for quick video uploads. Hands-on with T-Mobile’s revised Shadow

Windows Mobile Standard devices — you know, those pre-touchscreen relics — are getting to be tougher sales by the day. Touch is perceived as a “premium” experience (we’re not entirely sold on that) and with boatloads of price pressure in that category, these little guys are liable to get squeezed clean out of the market. The new Shadow, even more so than the original Shadow before it, definitely belies its Windows Mobile underpinnings with a funky shell that’s fit for average consumers who just want a decent looking slider — never mind a smartphone. The red-to-black gradient rear was totally bangin’, but as is all too often the case these days, the glossy top was a brutal canvas for grease, fingerprints, and other unsavory stains that you probably don’t want to press against your face. It’s a tradeoff, we suppose.

OQO officially launches Gobi / OLED-equipped model 2+, we get hands-on

We already knew a fresh OQO handheld would be headed to Digital Experience! here at CES, and lo and behold the model 2+ has arrived in our oh-so-fortunate hands. The 800 x 480 (native) OLED touchscreen was positively gorgeous to look at, and the Qualcomm Gobi dual-mode HSPA / EV-DO WWAN chipset was much appreciated. It’s also sporting a 1.86GHz Intel Atom CPU, 2GB of RAM, WiFi / Bluetooth, DirectX 9 and H.264 video decode support, 3.5 hours of battery life (7 hours on the double capacity cell), a world keyboard and a global power supply. The unit checks in at under a pound and can support 1,9200 x 1,200 external displays with HDMI / DVI / VGA interfaces. Get ready to lust after one (we already are) when it ships in 1H 2009 starting at $999.

Lenovo All-in-One IdeaCentre A600 hands-on

We just got a chance to check out Lenovo’s All-in-One IdeaCentre A600, featuring the motion-based remote control that doubles as a VoIP handset. Three minutes into the tennis game, we managed to toss the remote into an adjacent HDTV and pulled our shoulder out of alignment. We couldn’t call for help — the VoIP wasn’t functional — but we did manage to snap some screens with our good arm.
