Playboy releases not-so-discreet 250GB ‘cover to cover’ hard drive

Well, you can finally throw out that trunk in your grandfather’s garage. Hugh Heffner’s legacy has taken a cue from National Geographic — in an arguably non-horrifying way — and partnered with publisher Bondi Digital to release a (presumably Seagate-branded) 250GB external hard drive packed with every issue of Playboy released since 1953. Its $300 asking price is roughly four times what you’d pay for a fresh G-rated 250GB drive today, but compared to a 57-year subscription, the digital vault is certainly a bargain. In contrast to their trail blazin’ efforts with the iBod though, thanks to the prominent placement of the brand’s iconic bow tie-wearing bunny and name, there’s no chance of using this device for practical tasks such as backing up TPS reports at the office. Like the decision to phase out DVDs in favor of VOD however, the move does prove the magazine isn’t afraid of staying abreast of today’s content consumption trends. Next stop, Nook Color?

Hitachi debuts 7,200RPM 3TB Deskstar 7K3000 hard drive

Hitachi was the first to roll out a 7,200RPM, 3.5-inch 2TB hard drive, and it looks like it’s now done it again at the 3TB level. That comes in the form of the company’s new Deskstar 7K3000 model, which appears to not only be the first 7,200RPM 3TB drive hard around, but Hitachi’s first drive with a 6Gbps SATA interface. Otherwise, the five-platter drive packs a 64MB cache buffer, an idle power draw of 6.8W, and what Hitachi describes as an eco-friendly, halogen-free design. Still no word on pricing or a release date, but The Inquirer surmises it’ll cost somewhere in the neighborhood of £200, or $320.

Toshiba’s newest hard drive is designed for 24/7 rugged use

It doesn’t look like Toshiba’s going to put an end to its awkward hard drive naming convention anytime soon, but at least we can call the new MK1060GSCX the “24/7 durable one.” The 100GB, 2.5-inch SATA HDD is designed for “rugged operating environments” and continuous 24-hour operation. Obviously, Tosh has put this guy through the ringer — it claims that the drive can withstand -15 to +70 degrees Celsius as well as operate at expanded altitudes. The sacrifice you make for that, however, is in speed — the 4,200rpm drive has a 12msec seek time and 1.5Gbit/s interface speed. Of course, if you’re looking for something faster — one of Intel’s latest X25-M SSDs would run circles around that. Toshiba will also offer an even smaller 80GB MK8050GACY version with a PATA interface. No word on pricing, but Toshiba expects the new drives to hit sometime in December — hit the break for the full spec breakdown and press release.

Data Robotics’s Drobo S storage robot goes USB 3.0, starts at $800

Talk about maintaining a pace. Nearly a year to the day after the introduction of the original Drobo S comes this: the Drobo S. Er, the second generation Drobo S. As you could probably surmise from the title above, the only notable difference in Data Robotics’ newest storage robot is the addition of USB 3.0, but the triple interface ensures that eSATA and FireWire 800 users are also taken care of. Of course, USB 2.0 backwards compatibility is inbuilt, and while no theoretical speed figures are given, we’re sure it’s far quicker than the (now) prior version. It’ll be sold starting today directly from the company, but beginning on November 18th, it’ll also be featured on HP Small Business Direct. The (empty) base model will go for $799, while $1,299 buys you a five pack of 1TB HDDs, $1,549 gets you five 1.5TB HDDs and $1,799 lands you with five 2TB HDDs. In related news, Drobo Sync is now shipping in order to provide offsite backup to DroboPro FS units, and Billy Corgan still enjoys playing with Bluetooth speaker balls while on vacation. Crazy, right?

LaCie speeds up Philippe Starck mobile hard drive with USB 3.0

We’ve always been fans of LaCie’s Starck Mobile Drives, designed by the inimitable Phillip Starck, and now they’re getting a little speed boost, courtesy of USB 3.0. The 500GB drive is still housed in the same “liquid metal trapped in a box” enclosure as the previous editions, and it comes bundled with 10GB of online storage at Wuala Online for $109 in the US and £89 in the UK. Looks like it’s out of stock just at the moment, but we’d imagine it’ll arrive soon. Shot of the back and PR after the break.

Hitachi GST’s G-Drive Slim: world’s thinnest 2.5-inch external hard drive

Not like we need our 2.5-inch external drives to get that much smaller, but who are we to kvetch about progress? Hitachi GST has just outed what it calls the thinnest 2.5-inch external hard drive in the world. The G-Drive Slim is encased in a 128.6- x 82- x 9.9mm aluminum enclosure, and tucked within is a slimmer-than-usual 7mm Travelstar Z5K320 hard drive. The USB-powered unit comes formatted for use with Macs, but a quick reformat on your Windows machine will have its mind changed in no time flat. For now, it’s only available in a 320GB flavor for $99.99, and you’ll only find it at your local Apple Store.

Do you have The Need? For Speed? Yeah, so do we, and it just so happens that LaCie does as well. Just weeks after the company properly introduced the “now shipping” status on its d2 USB 3.0 and 2big USB 3.0 drives, it has now expanded the options with a 6TB model. So far as we can tell, it looks as if the outfit placed a rather sizable order for those 3TB HDDs that were just unleashed by Western Digital, and it has tuned up the performance all the while. The 2big has reached 306MB/sec in the lab, representing a 20 percent speed boost over the prior models while making it “the fastest 2-bay RAID solution on the market.” As for the d2? It can hum along at 156MB/sec with the inclusion of a 3TB hard drive. Both units are slated to hit retail next month, but asking prices are being kept under wraps for now.

Western Digital ships 3TB Caviar Green 3.5-inch hard drive for $239, 2.5TB for $189

You know that 3TB hard drive that Western Digital slapped into its range of My Book external units earlier this month? Looks like it’s finally ready to free itself from those shackles. WD has today announced that it’s shipping the component 3TB Caviar Green drive (WD30EZRSDTL) by its lonesome, perfect for those looking to beef up their NAS drives or just add a capacious archive drive to their SSD-equipped desktop rig. The 3TB monster is hitting just under two years after the 2TB Caviar Green went official, with this guy boasting 750 GB-per-platter areal density and Advanced Format technology. The outfit’s also shipping a 2.5TB version (WD25EZRSDTL) for those who aren’t quite able to swallow the full three, and both of ’em are bundled with an Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI)-compliant Host Bus Adapter (HBA), which will enable the operating system to use a known driver with correct support for large capacity drives. Both units should be available to purchase from respected retailers as we speak, with the 3TB demanding $239 and the 2.5TB unit going for $189. Remember when the world’s first 1TB drive in this form factor debuted for $400? Yeah… not too shabby!

Update: Storage Review, Legit Reviews and Hot Hardware have put this thing through its paces, and they all seem pretty darn stoked on the performance. Though, LR did seem to run into a few HD Tach issues, so be sure to peek that carefully.

WD Live TV Hub media streamer / NAS leaks out of Best Buy with gigabit ethernet, 1TB hard drive

Western Digital’s got a few different media streamers to its name, but the only one with sizable internal storage was the pared-down Elements Play. No more, because the AVS Forums have stumbled upon a feature-packed alternative — the WD TV Live Hub. Purchased at a Best Buy before the blue shirts realized their mistake, the slim new set-top comes with 1TB of storage, 1080p playback over HDMI 1.4, component and composite video out, optical S/PDIF, and all the internet connectivity you’d expect (including Netflix, Blockbuster, Pandora, YouTube and Facebook) over speedy gigabit ethernet. We don’t know how robust the network-attached-storage functionality is, but the lucky owner of this box says it serves up iTunes and DLNA and can function as a network share, just like the My Book Live. Buffalo gets snazzy with LinkStation V-Series NAS drives

Look, we’ve all been there — you cruise home to hang with mom and pops, and one of the two asks if they can see those vacation images you took of the grandkids last month. “They’re on my hard drive at home,” you reply. Weeping commences, and your mum in particular scolds you for not “getting with the program” and “investing in a NAS drive.” It’s about time you listened, don’tcha think? Buffalo does, as it has just revealed a trio of new LinkStation drives (Pro, Pro Duo, Pro Quad) in the V-series ranging from 1TB to 8TB in size. The whole family looks mighty stylish for a Buffalo, and they’re all eager and willing to stream to DLNA-certified devices (hello, PS3 and Xbox 360!). The company claims that all three members — which sport a 1.6GHz CPU — can hit transfer speeds up to 76MB/sec, and a gratis WebAccess app enables you to pull up those images for gramps with your iPhone or iPad. The whole lot is available now starting at $189.99 (topping out at a whopping $1,039.99), and given that we both know you’ve know been schooled… well, let’s just say a new level of expectations have been set. Don’t blow it.
