Lenovo IdeaPad K1’s videos pair easy listening with helpful how-to’s (video)

Know what really sells a Honeycomb-based tablet? No, not its 10.1-inch display, Tegra 2 processor, nor those 32GBs of storage space — it’s the background music, man. Someone in Lenovo’s marketing department must have an iTunes library chock full o’department store-worthy Lite FM jams, because that schmaltzy muzak is all over its dozen-plus IdeaPad K1 how-to videos. We’re kind of disappointed the company couldn’t get Lisa Stansfield for a voice-over cameo, but hey — who says we’re living in a perfect universe? Prospective IdeaPad owners should check the source, where they’ll be treated to such instructional, chart-topping gems like “Getting to know your Tablet,” or our personal favorite “Adding and Removing Shortcuts.” All kidding aside, we still don’t have a firm date on this tablet’s launch, but with its FCC presence cleared expect to see it sooner rather than later.

Toshiba Thrive in stock at Newegg and Amazon, is ready to ship free to your door

You’ll need to wait until Sunday to get your hands on a Toshiba Thrive at Best Buy, but the Honeycomb slate is ready to head out Newegg’s door, with free shipping to boot. $430 nets you an 8GB tablet with two-day shipping, or you can add 30 bucks to get it overnight. That’s unlikely to mean tomorrow at this point, but if you play your cards right, you could be sliding through emails a la Swype before the weekend is out.

Update: Best Buy has confirmed that the Thrive will be available on July 10th, both in-store and online.

Update 2: Looks like it’s live on Amazon, too!

Acer starts rolling out Android 3.1 update for the Iconia Tab A500

Almost on schedule, Acer has started pushing out an update for its Iconia Tab A500 that will upgrade the 10-inch slate to Android 3.1. If you’ll recall, the update actually leaked late last month, but would have required folks to take the risk of flashing their tablets. As is often the case, it’s unclear how long the roll-out will last, so don’t be crestfallen if you can’t enjoy those resizeable widgets just yet. For those of you who did wake up to an update, have at it — and do tell us how it goes.

Sony’s S1 and S2 tablets pose for the cameras again, show off more angles (video)

http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/05/sonys-s1-and-s2-tablets-pose-for-the-cameras-again-show-off-mo/

Sony’s S1 and S2 Honeycomb tablets have been very coy in front of the cameras since their initial unveiling. Aside from two visually pleasing short films and a tease of a hands-on, we haven’t seen much of them since — or any specific release details, for that matter. The former’s changed at least, however, thanks to Notebook Italia. The site managed to handle the duo long enough in front of a lens to capture a bevy of snapshots, along with a short video of the S1 running PlayStation Suite. If you’ve been anxious to get a better look you’ll find the S1 clip past the break, and all of the photos by hitting the source link below.

Update: Niccolo from HDblog.it wrote in just as this post was going live, offering up another batch of screenshots and another hands-on video. That’s down below, enabling double your viewing pleasure, and double your fun.

[Thanks, Lau]

Toshiba Thrive tablet on display at Best Buy, possibly on sale too?

Toshiba Thrive
Yes, what you’re looking at is a shackled Toshiba Thrive tablet out in the wild at Best Buy — not just waiting caged in a cardboard confine in some dreary stockroom. Though the device most likely won’t ship until July 10th, “Dandroid” over at Toshiba Thrive Forums is reporting that his local Austin, Texas location is evidently neglecting that memo. The store apparently has several 16GB and 32GB WiFi models ready to fly off the shelves for $480 and $580, but we won’t hold our breath until we see a proper YouTube unboxing. Still, it may be worth a detour on the way home if you’re feeling lucky or just can’t wait any longer to inspect those full-sized ports.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 demo video shows TouchWiz on Honeycomb, Mini Apps

GalaxyTab 10.1 demo video shows off TouchWiz on Honeycomb, 'Mini apps'

Surely by now you’re mighty familiar with Samsung’s Android-conquering Galaxy Tab 10.1, but we’re still here waiting on that slate’s promised TouchWiz update. Now it’s on display, courtesy of an official video posted by the company. Whilst listening to some incredibly jazzy music that will make racing fans think they’ve accidentally booted into Gran Turismo 5, watch a disembodied hand show off some of the Honeycomb customizations that, for the most part, look fairly unobtrusive, including a bigger, friendlier settings screen. More interesting, though, is a look at the Mini Apps that are accessed by what looks to be a gesture from off the bottom of the display. Six proggies will be available at launch: a calendar, task manager, clock, note pad, calculator, and music player. We’re still not sure just when the OTA update will filter out to enable these suckers, but more importantly we’re not sure what to call them when it does. Mini Apps isn’t doing it for us, and sadly Java already has “applets” locked up tight.

[Thanks, Marc]

Sprint updates Samsung Galaxy Tab to Gingerbread, gets over post-holiday blues

Samsung Galaxy Tab owners in the US have been anxiously waiting for their prized possession to get an update to Honeycomb and its tablet-optimized wonders, only to be warmly greeted by crickets for months. Fortunately, as we reported last week, Sprint’s taken the first step in the right direction by bumping its Tab up to Gingerbread and throwing in a few standard maintenance fixes at the same time. The new build, also known as “GINGERBREAD.EF17,” will be sent out OTA in stages; the deed should be done for every Tab on the Now Network over the next four days. To see if your tablet is ready to get its refresh on, go into settings, choose “About My Galaxy Tab,” and select “system updates.” Be sure to set aside five minutes for Gingerbread to download and install on your device, and you’ll be good to go. It’s no Android 3.1, of course, but at least Sprint’s one step ahead of the pack.

Sony’s new tablet teaser is just as hypnotic as the first (video)

Before stumbling back to work this morning, you might wanna take a minute to give your neurons a well-deserved massage with this new teaser for Sony’s S1 and S2 tablets. Much like last month’s spellbinding ad, this sequel features plenty of balls, levers and bizarre figurines moving together in serpentine synergy. If you look closely, you might even spot one of Sony’s Honeycomb slates. This is only the second installation in what could very well be a never-ending series — but we’d be OK with that, because these clips make our brains happy. Click play to get the ball rolling and let the symphony begin.

Toshiba Thrive WiFi tablet hitting Best Buy on July 10th?

Toshiba Thrive
Toshiba’s Thrive — the Honeycomb tablet that went so long without a name — has evidently snagged itself a July 10th street date, according to Best Buy’s inventory database. If you’ll recall, pre-orders for the 10.1-inch pad got underway June 13th, and though we’ve long been hearing it would go on sale July 10th, Toshiba has only been giving a loose ETA of mid-July. Our tipster’s informed us that their particular location’s received “quite a few” 16-giggers in-stock, and they’re just waiting to shine under the fluorescent showroom lights. So, it’ll still be about a week’s time until you can get your paws on one, but in the meantime, scoot past the break and you’ll find some Thrive packages in the flesh, er, cardboard.

[Thanks, Anonymous]
